Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Azizan bin Zainul Abidin served as the Chairman of Malaysian
Airline System Berhad (MAS) from 15 February 2001 until his sudden demise on
14 July 2004. Tan Sri came to MAS at a most critical juncture in its history, and
provided the Airline with the committed and strategic leadership needed to see
the Company through. He will be remembered for overseeing the restructuring
and turnaround of MAS to what it is today – an international airline that is
acknowledged as one of the best in the world, having garnered a string of
service awards recently; an airline that recorded profits for this and the previous
financial period, having put in place a range of initiatives to upgrade its products
and enhance its services.
Tan Sri Azizan was the epitome of professionalism and dedication, humility and
graciousness. He overcame the tribulations of a challenging childhood to become
a man bestowed with the best of qualities – caring and courteous, honest and
honourable. He was a patriotic Malaysian, having given the best years of his life
to serving the nation and taken on whatever responsibilities placed upon him,
in particular the growth of PETRONAS, the development of Putrajaya and the
reinvention of MAS.
We at MAS will always be grateful for the opportunity to have had Tan Sri Azizan
as a true leader and mentor.

Malaysian Airline System Berhad (MAS) recorded a second consecutive year of profit following the
implementation of the Widespread Asset Unbundling exercise in 2002. The Airline continues to win
global awards for its service and flight performance, including the coveted ‘World’s Best Cabin Staff
Award 2003’ for the third year. MAS is therefore living up to its promise of ‘Going Beyond Expectations’,
enshrined in the four pillars – a promise to be better, a commitment to excel, a statement of pride
and a challenge to embrace. MAS is becoming a global airline of choice, a journey forward that is due
to recent initiatives as well as incremental developments over the years. This Annual Report depicts the
renewed energy evident in MAS today while providing glimpses of its proud heritage.
