See and Be Seen
Here I am in the new Buick! The Chicago
Automobile Show in 1961 seems a long
time ago, as I look at my souvenir Polaroid
Land Picture that was ready in just 10 seconds.
Modern inventions abounded then, as
did fins, V8s and chrome on the cars.
If you think 1961 was a ways back, the
Chicago Auto Show started in 1918.
Imagine all the cars, the manufacturers and
people sitting behind the wheel over the last
88 years. There sure have been a lot of
changes in the vehicles and the consumer’s
needs over the years. One thing
has remained though. We all have
it in common. That’s the simple
pleasure that comes from looking
at cars.
New ones, old ones, Porsches, cars
to buy, cars to dream about, cars
standing clean and shiny, and even
cars racing by. Whether we are
active drivers in events, or drive
our Porsches to work, or just look
at pictures in the magazine, I
believe we all enjoy seeing cars
and being with other automotive
enthusiasts. Especially Porsche
owners.
Car watching, people watching and race
watching opportunities abound at RMR this
year. Although there are fewer local tracks
to visit for drivers and spectators this year,
here are some suggestions to entertain your
Porsche family throughout 2006.
RMR has great car shows for you and the
kids to enjoy. A good choice is the June 4th
Concours d’ Elegance with over 350 various
sports, exotic and collectable cars on
display at Arapahoe Community College.
Stop by and visit this officially judged
show. Admission fees raise money for
Cerebral Palsy of Colorado children’s programs.
This is a big event for the car
crowd in Colorado, so come early and take
in the many interesting cars and talk with
owners and fans alike.
PRESIDENT
RESIDENT’S MESSAGE ESSAGE
Your second stop should be Gmünd West
2006 on June 25th. This event includes a
Porsche Concours including many 356s, a
928 registry gathering, Porsche Schleppers
(diesel tractors), and other Porsche models
representing every decade of Porsche history
on display and being judged for awards.
There will be a Schlepper-Cross for adults
and children, a swap meet, and Biergarten
and Brats for refreshments. Bring your
Porsche to park at the casual display, and
enjoy the lawn party among the colorful
and interesting Porsches.
Next, pull into the Clive Cussler Museum.
This summer we are scheduling a membership
meeting at the reknown, but seldom
open to the public, Clive Cussler Museum
here in Denver. Cussler, author of the popular
Dirk Pitt novels, spent some of his royalties
on over 88 vintage and classic cars
from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, and he has a
fantastic collection. Watch for announcements
on the time and date, and bring a
family member out for this event.
Autocrosses are fun to watch, as drivers
wander, sometmes aimlessly, around the
cones in a big parking lot trying to finish
the course in the quickest time. Smoking
tires, spins and flying cones usually mark
these exciting events. Consider planning a
weekend morning drive in your Porsche
with an autocross destination in mind.
These events are held in the early morning
through lunch, and the sidelines of an
autocross are just the place to enjoy that
cup of coffee and bagel or a Big Mac and
Coke with a friend. See the schedule for
places and dates.
You can follow those Club Racers that you
have been reading about in Mike’s column
for the last year by heading down to Pueblo
for the Club Race on September 15th -17th
for some serious race watching. Head
down to Pueblo for great Porsche fun, and
create some new memories for your kids.
Waivers need to be signed for adults and
minors at the gate entrance. Then,
you can visit the pits and the grandstands,
and share in some Porsche
talk and hear about the driver’s day at
Beer-30 after the race is done. If you
want to be even closer to the action,
adults are welcome to volunteer to
work the corner flags or radios for the
race by calling Kathy Fricke.
Now, if you are planning a longer trip
with your Porsche, like a weekend in
Aspen or La Junta (ok, real hard to
choose which one), you could include
a stop at the track to visit a driver
education event in progress. These
are always fun days that end with a
visit to a good restaurant for food and drink
(it gets hot out there) and to socialize with
fellow members. See if an RMR event fits
into your plans this summer.
We all like to visit the new car showroom,
(assuming we can avoid the salesmen), and
I am sure we make that trip to the Porsche
dealer each year just to see what’s on the
lot. Each year dealers often have open
houses to introduce new models, or a party
to celebrate the common bond of the automotive
industry between the people in the
business and those that keep them there.
Attending these events is a nice way to say
you’re welcome, and the food is pretty
good, too. More than one member has left
the evening’s fun with a new Porsche, so
leave your trade-in at home.

Finally, RMR tech inspection nights are
held at various area shops throughout the
summer. Stopping by one in the evening is
a great way to see these sponsoring facilities,
meet the people, and also to have a
look at cars in their shop and peer under
the hoods (or trunks).
I think you will agree that there are several
special opportunities for you to enjoy a
variety of automotive events, and to share
the times with your friends and family.
Remember to take souvenir pictures using
the latest technology for 2006, perhaps a
cell phone or digital camera, so the kids
will have something to look back on in 40
or 50 years and see what their hair once
looked like.
As I write this, it seems like summer is
already here. It is warm and sunny and I am
getting ready to pack for La Junta. Hope to
see you there.
Looking at the calendar above , this is going
to be a busy month. There are three challenge
series events, one day just for the
ladies, two tours, and two opportunities to
look at clean and fancy cars. Oh yes, and a
chance to drive a Porsche tractor. And
that’s just June. We may be short of tracks,
but there are a lot of other activities to occu-
THE HE “TAX “TAX
RELIEF” ELIEF”
SPRING SPRING
RALLY ALLY
After a great week of sunny weather, the
skies turned gray and cool for the start of
the “Spring Rally” in great Rocky
Mountain style. As all of the participants
arrived at Johnson’s Corner, we were glad,
as well as Registrar, Norma Nada and
Waiver Guy, Dean Johnson, we had chosen
to be indoors to get registered and organized.
The checkpoint workers were
equipped and prepped by Lee Sammons to
brave the elements and probably wondered
how they got roped into sitting outside
officiating the event. Thanks to Kathy and
Walt Fricke, Dotty and Alan Fritze, Pat
Newman and Rex Heck, Mark and Lincoln
Bradley, George Whitney, and Bill Emory!
Forty seven Porsches and other marquees
participated in the event along with their
respective drivers and navigators. After the
drivers’ meeting and distribution of the
route instructions the first cars headed out
towards the odometer check and the first
checkpoint. Surprisingly to some, the
weather had cleared out, just like we had
planned. Thanks to Lee Sammons and Jon
Kanas for the hours and miles of working
with us that went into checking the route
and preparing rally instructions!
Taking it all in running the sweep car, it
looked as if all were pretty well on course
through the lakes of Loveland to
Checkpoint 1 as well as through the winding
roads and vistas past Horsetooth
Reservoir and into Checkpoint 2. The
“Relief” part of the rally was a 75-minute
transit up Rist Canyon and back down
Poudre Canyon which we hear everyone
enjoyed! The TSD rally then picked up at
Ted’s Place for a short 3rd leg through Ft.
Collins and back into Old Town. At the 3rd
checkpoint, we started missing cars, and
navigators and drivers were “Taxed” as
they pulled into the finish and on to Old
Towne.
At Coopersmith’s the “Returns” were filed
with Brian Buck, Peggy Englert, and Andy
Forberg for scoring (thanks!). The participants
gathered around, enjoyed a late
lunch, and beer-30, as the rest of the participants
filed
in and shared
their on and
off route experiences.
All
had a chance
at a door prize
for the lucky
Porsche
Model
Number in
“German
Poker”.
Thanks to Ed
Carroll
Porsche in Ft.
Collins for the door prizes!
Overall results of the rally were: 1st Place
Mary Jane Hopkinson and Richard “Doc”
Porter, 2nd Norma Nada and Greg Curtiss,
3rd Bob and Marj Breeden, 4th Susan
Bucknam and David Speights, and 5th
John & Florence Mackin. The rest of the
results and Challenge Series Points are on
the RMR website.
To some, perhaps, filing taxes seemed a
relief and less taxing than the event! We
enjoyed the day and are especially thankful
to all that participated as well as those that
helped us out in putting on the event. After
all we were rookies!
HEEL/TOE (THAT’S HIGH HEELS AND POINTY TOES!)
LADIES DAY 2006!
All women drivers are invited to join in the fun
at the Colorado State Trooper Patrol Academy
track on beautiful Table Mountain in Golden.
(And all our male friends are encouraged to
come out and celebrate new drivers, cheer on our
veterans, help out with instruction and corners,
and enjoy a mid-summer party.)
The day will offer some very unique opportunities—no
matter if you’ve never driven on a track
before or if you’re a seasoned club racer. We’re
planning a variety of skill-building and learning
experiences, on the track and off.
Some highlights:
• A skid pad with sprinkler to simulate very
slick conditions. Chief Driving Instructor Randy
Hoch promises a chance to learn a cool bootleg
turn technique.
• A quick-response lane change experience,
with real-world and race track applications
• “Hot laps in the real world”—an afternoon of
fun on a 1.4 mile track that simulates an undulating,
rural Colorado 2-lane highway
• A “field guide to the Porsche” introducing
you to the wonders of Porsche, and to the fun of
performance driving. You will even discover the
meaning of “Heel/Toe”. (Hint: it’s not about
stilettos or bows.)
• Valuable prizes! Lots of surprises! And great
food!
And the particulars:
All women drivers over 18 are welcome.
Drivers don’t have to be RMR members, so this
is a great event to introduce your lady friends
and family members to this great sport.
Drive your Porsche or any other car you’re comfortable
in. (Exceptions: convertibles or open
cars without roll bars, trucks, or non-Porsche
SUVs.)
Fees: Just $75 for all the fun; co-drivers can register
for $50. Register online at
The program at 7:30 will feature Racing data acquisition devices that are now available in the sub $1000
price range. Many have found these new units simple to install and use, requiring just a connection to the
vehicle’s cigarette-lighter to get started. Mark Franklin will discuss his experiences and recommendations
from using one of these data loggers in club racing, including its capability to shave important seconds
from lap times. He will also show how it is now possible to merge video and data for even more intuitive
analysis. Mark will, of course, include some fun racing footage.
IMPORTANT MPORTANT EVENT VENT INFORMATION NFORMATION
Registration
This year RMR and AMR will be using an
online registration for all of our events.
Just go to our website:
www.rmrporscheclub.com and click on
Online Event Registration. You will need
to set up an account for yourself only one
time with basic information. When you go
into online registration, pick the event you
want to register for and follow the instructions
on the screen. You can pay via credit
card, online check, or you can send in a
check separately. If you choose to send a
check to the registrar, please be aware that
you are not officially registered for an
event until we received payment - this may
be important for events that have a maximum
number of entrants allowed. The
form allows entry of 3 car numbers. If
your car already has an assigned number,
please use that one only. If your car does
not yet have an assigned number, you may
fill in 3 numbers that you might want or
just leave this blank. Please do not enter
multiple numbers if you have an assigned
number with RMR/AMR.
OR
How to build a racecar in only 7
days!
For those of you who have actually been
reading this article, you may have noticed
that last month piece was a reprint of the previous
month’s article (even though the photos
were for this article). Rest assured that this
was simply a test to make sure you were paying
attention! And I promise that I’ll try to
actually send the correct copy from here on.
In the weeks leading up to the Topeka Club
Race, Jesse Wurmbrand was doing his usual
best to over-hype the promise of putting
together a strong field of “F” cars for the
race. His strategy is simple; call as many
racers in multiple states as possible and tell
them that “everyone is coming”, even though
“no one” has committed! When faced with
the perceived likelihood of missing out on a
great weekend of racing, “everyone” caves
and actually
shows up.
Meanwhile, poor
Bill Petty’s GT3
car had suffered
engine failure
last month in
Texas and the
only way he was
going to make
this next race
was to take
action. So, in an
overheated
moment of unbridled desperation, he drove to
CU/Boulder and collected the SC that his
daughter was using for school and dropped it
off at Storz Garage with specific instructions
to turn it into an F class racecar in one
week’s time! Bob Brown and
Mike Walz at Storz responded
very positively to the challenge
and with a little help from his
friends Bill was putting the finishing
touches on his new car
the night before we were to
leave! His 7-day wonder rolled
out of Storz complete with a full
suspension package, an oil-cooling
system in a new front
valence, cut-off switch, rollbar,
race seat with 6 point harnesses,
headers/megaphones, and numbers.
Bill’s daughter will be going back to
college in the fall but this car will definitely
not be!
Friday – test and tune - 15 Colorado racers
looked out from under their umbrellas long
enough to greet one another and express
reservations about the one inch of rain that
Porsches in the mist
THE HE DRIVERS RIVERS LOUNGE OUNGE
was forecast for the day. Susan Bucknam
had arrived with her car occupying the second
slot in Dave Speight’s trailer. She would
be driving in the DE portion of the weekend
as would Dan Meyer. Grady Clay tagged
Mud and more mud
along to provide color commentary and an
historical perspective on all things Porsche.
Things proceed on schedule at PCA events
and we took to the track. The freshly-paved
and lengthened 2.5 mile circuit somewhat
leveled the playing field between those who
knew the old course well and the rest of us
who were seeing it for the
first time. Heartland Park
has just undergone a 12
million dollar renovation
and it was apparent everywhere
you looked. In
addition to the track
improvements, a new tech
building, driver’s lounge,
and timing and scoring
tower will help elevate
HPT to national prominence
as befits the new
home of the SCCA
Runoffs.
June 2006 l RMR Porsche
To everyone’s surprise Petty was quickest
throughout the morning – his secret? – the
mud and snow tires that he had put on the car
for the winter! Jess and I opined that the
planets were surely out of alignment and that
things would be put right by a healthy dose
of sunshine, but that was definitely not what
Saturday brought!
Saturday – practice/qualifying/fun race/sprint
race – Now if we were doing this racing
thing for a living, today’s
schedule would have had the
drivers looking for overtime
pay. But heck, everyone was
feeling great because we were
only promised a half-inch of
rain throughout the day. Plus,
we were getting pretty good at
wiping the fog off the inside of
our windshields on the straightaways.
The roostertails and
general spray also made things
exciting. People were spinning
off into the ultra-saturated mud
all over the track. A steady line
formed at the wash bay as drivers
and crews hosed the goo
out from under their cars. Full
course cautions and “Black
All” flags were frustratingly
common. The All-Colorado
National Staff in the personage of Vicki
Earnshaw; Chief Steward, and Scrutineers;
Walt Fricke and Jerry Blazek were kept pretty
busy but somehow not with metal-to-metal
incidents, which were few. For qualifying,
the rain finally abated and the track was not
dry but certainly less wet. We convinced
Bill, the budding F-car driver, that putting on
“sticker” Hoosiers would guarantee him a
chance to qualify up front. I would have
loved to see the looks on the corner workers’
faces on his first lap as he went straight off in
turn one about 200’ into the mire! He said
that as the tow vehicle was pulling him out,
you could still see the stickers on the tires, oh
well.
The first sprint race was won in driving rain
by a Texan named Steve Coomes who had
purchased a set of hand-cut Hoosier rains. It
was basically one-groove racing and he was
followed across the line by Jess while Bob
Polich and I played follow the leader to 4th
and 5th. The surprise of the day and indeed
the weekend was Bill Lamb who really took
to the wet, finishing well up the grid beating
many quicker cars in the process. John
Skovgaard also ran well as would his
Steamboat Springs stablemate Shawn
Graham, (but in the dry not in the wet; he
suffers from a mild case of hydrophobia
induced by a mild brush with a wall at
Second Creek a couple of years ago). In the
GT group sprint, Bobby Dahlstrom visited
Topeka rolls out the red carpet
“Petty Pond” in turn one but rebounded well
to win his class in each of the succeeding
races. The less-fortunate Tony Clinton gazed
under his car early on to see what all the
racket was about. He was surprised to see a
connecting rod looking back at him from the
hole it had punched in his engine case. As
they say, “that’s racing”.
Sunday dawned with a glimmer of sunshine.
Our second sprint race was run on a track
that actually had some dry spots on it. Jesse,
Texan “Uber-racer” Jim Buckley, and I had
opened up a substantial lead in the race at
half-distance. In an effort to close on Jim in
the 4th gear to 2nd gear turn eight, I left my
braking way too late, fell on my sword, and
went off deep into the mush. The really
embarrassing thing about this little incident
was that I came to rest hopelessly stuck and
facing oncoming traffic. As the pace car led
the field by on the next lap, you could almost
19
hear the laughter as my driver buddies waved
pleasantly in mock sympathy with my plight.
All I could think about was the fact that we
had one more race left and the old saw, “he
who laughs last, laughs best”. Meanwhile,
Jess stayed in front of Buckley for the win.
Sunday Enduro – As fortune would have it,
grid position for this one-hour “baby enduro”
(with mandatory 5-minute pit stop) was to be
determined by fastest lap time in the aforementioned
race. That put me third on the
grid behind Buckley and Jesse. Had they
gridded us by finishing position I would have
started 35th! Another wrinkle had Petty and
Polich sharing Bill’s CU “grocery-getter”
cum racecar since Polich’s car had developed
clutch issues which sidelined it for the weekend.
Also regrettably, Steve Wright could not
stay on for the enduro. A shame as he had
handily put in back to back top 10 finishes in
the sprints without any agricultural excursions.
On the opening lap, Buckley dropped
a wheel, covered Jess’s windshield with mud,
which caused him to pit for a cleaning.
Simultaneously, another driver went off into
the mud which precipitated a full-course caution.
Jess made it out of the pits just in front
of the pace car which gave him his lap back.
I took advantage of the caution and pitted
while Buckley stayed out; probably thinking
the open track in front of him would let him
stretch his lead, thinking there would surely
be another yellow! But that would not prove
to be the case. I finished my 5 minute stop
and marked laps looking in my mirrors for a
challenge that did not come. That is until the
final lap, when I looked back to see the yellow
number 101 coming at full tilt. We
would both run our fastest laps of the weekend
on this final circuit and I just managed to
hold Jess off at the line for the overall win—
while managing a hearty “last” laugh. So
ended a great weekend for our Colorado juggernaut!
Our sincerest thanks go to the Kansas City
Region who ran a great event.
