Cutural Events SPRING 2007
[VISUAL ARTS]
Monday 5th to Saturday 24th February
Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart
Exhibition
New Light
Through Old
Windows
This exhibition, created by Steve Lowry,
a microscopist at the University of Ulster,
centres on images taken from old Victorian
microscope slides. Victorian microscopists
were great enthusiasts for creating visually
stimulating, colourful, abstract microscopic
preparations for viewing through a
‘polariscope’. These were largely created as
art, rather than for their scientific value.
Using modern photographic technology it is
now possible to bring this wealth of hidden
beauty to a wider audience. The micrographs
in the exhibition are accompanied by
manipulated images printed on to a range
of materials using state-of-the-art textile and
visual art methodologies, which have been
produced by Interface, the University’s research
centre in art technologies and design.
The exhibition will also be on show at the Clotworthy
Arts Centre, Antrim from 6th to 30th March and will
then tour to further venues. Check
www.culture.ulster.ac.uk for updated venue details.
[MUSIC]
Tuesday 13th February
1.00pm, Mezzanine level, Jordanstown campus
Lunchtime Gig
Ben Glover
Ben Glover was sixteen
when he started
performing in his home
village of Glenarm.
Influenced by Tom Waits
and Bob Dylan, Ben’s
music is subtle acousticrock,
coloured by lyrics
filled with stark poetic imagery. His sound has
hints of Americana but at the core of the songs
is Ben’s instantly recognisable voice and the
natural influence of his Irish roots.
Ben is fast building a reputation amongst his
audiences as one of the most intriguing and
captivating artists emerging from Ireland. His
recent half hour live session recorded at the
Opera House for BBC Radio Ulster’s ‘Across
the Line’ has helped propel him into the front
line of Ireland’s ‘A List’ artists.
Admission: Free
[FILM/MEDIA]
Wednesday 14th February
1.00pm, the Link Lounge, Coleraine
Centre for Media Research
Documenting Memories:
The Role of the Documentary Maker in
Constructing 'Narratives of Trauma’
Anne Crilly, Lecturer in the School of Media,
Film and Journalism and award-winning
documentary film maker, will screen and
discuss her documentary film Lifting a Dark
Cloud: The Kathleen Thompson Case.
In November 1971, Derry mother Kathleen
Thompson was killed by the British Army in
her back garden. Like many other cases at the
time, there was never a police investigation
into her death and no one was ever charged
with her murder. This is the story of the
forgotten events of that night and the legacy
it left for a family and a community.
This continues Crilly's recent work in exploring
issues of grief and closure in post conflict
Northern Ireland in the award winning short
film Limbo and the documentary Witness: the
Bloody Sunday Inquiry
Admission: Free
