SUMMER PREVIEW

Magee campus
The North West
Academy of the Arts
The Magee campus will be one of the host
venues for this summer’s North West Academy
of the Arts. The Academy will bring together
200 talented young people, aged 16-18, from
the border counties of the North West of Ireland
to develop and enhance their artistic and creative
talents through an intensive residential training
and coaching programme in July 2007.
A partnership between the North West Institute
of Further and Higher Education (NWIFHE), the
University of Ulster, the Western Education and
Library Board and Donegal VEC, the Academy
follows on the success of previous programmes
in 2004 and 2005.
Participants on the two-week residential
programme must have a passionate interest in
the visual and performing arts. Applicants will
be auditioned and interviewed to determine
their suitability for the programme and
those lucky enough to be selected will each
receive a full scholarship to cover all fees and
residential costs, estimated to be worth in the
region of £1,500 per student.
The NWAA is funded under the Peace and
Reconciliation Programme, measure 5.2.

Coleraine campus
Talks and Tours
The University of Ulster’s Talks and Tours
programme of short courses, day trips,
residentials and evening talks has been offering
an introduction to a wide variety of topics to
all members of the community for 36 years
and is supported by Coleraine, Limavady and
Ballymoney Councils. The 2007 programme
will include trips to Tory and Rathlin Islands
and short courses on a variety of subjects,
including drama, dance and creative writing.
There will also be a range of entertaining
and informative talks on a wide variety of
fascinating topics and unique day trips to
explore some of the places of interest around
the region.
Talks and Tours provides an enjoyable and
leisurely way for participants to learn more
about subjects that interest them by offering
access to expert tutors, guides and speakers
in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. To find

City of Derry
Guitar Festival
This annual festival of guitar and new music,
now in its sixth year, is a great opportunity
for guitarists and composers of all levels,
irrespective of age. Participants will have the
opportunity to participate in masterclasses,
workshops, ensembles, solo performances
and much more, in a relaxed atmosphere.
The festival is renowned for the accessibility
of its tutors and the informality of its learning
environment. Tutors for 2007 include
internationally renowned guitarists Carlos
Bonell (making his fourth return visit), Clive
Caroll, Graham Devine and Asya Choskin, as
well as the composer Nikita Coshkin, whose
work will be celebrated during the festival.
