Cutural Events SPRING 2007 [MUSIC] Tuesday 1st May 1.15pm, the Great Hall, Magee campus Lunchtime Concert BMus Students This concert will be presented by second- and third-year students on the BMus course at the School of Creative Arts as part of the long build-up to the final degree concerts at the end of the academic year. Performance is a major strand within the BMus programme and these performances will reflect the wide range of styles covered on the course. Admission: £3/Free admission for UU students Information: Cultural Development Office at the Magee campus on (028) 7137 5456 or n.pearce@ulster.ac.uk [MUSIC] Tuesday 1st May 8.00pm, St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast Wednesday 2nd May 8.00pm, Christ Church, Infirmary Road, Londonderry Concert of Organ and Choral Music These concerts will feature the organ (the stunning new instrument by Ken Jones in St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast and the Wells- Kennedy organ in Christ Church, Derry) and the University’s highly-acclaimed choirs. The Missa brevis by Laurence Roman, recently appointed to a Lectureship in Composition in the School of Creative Arts, will receive its first performance in the Belfast concert. The work is based on several Gregorian chants and its performance will involve the chamber choir and, intriguingly, three pianists at one piano. Desmond Hunter, who has achieved international distinction as an organist, will perform Franck’s celebrated Chorale in A minor alongside works by Couperin and Messiaen. Aoife Miskelly, who is well-known for her work with the National Chamber Choir, will be the soloist in Poulenc’s stirring Gloria, conducted/ directed by Shaun Ryan Admission: Donations to Retiring Collection Information: Cultural Development Office at the Magee campus on (028) 7137 5456 or n.pearce@ulster.ac.uk [FILM /MEDIA] Wednesday 2nd May 1.00pm, the Link Lounge, Coleraine campus Centre for Media Research The recipe for creating a world-beating indigenous digital media industry Colm Murphy, Lecturer in the School of Media, Film and Journalism, will outline the measures used in the Republic of Ireland to create a world-leading digital media industry. The republic has become one of the world's leading exporters of digital media and services over the past 10 years with companies like Google, Yahoo and e-Bay basing some of their operations there. Murphy writes regularly for The Sunday Times, London and Penguin books, mainly on business and economics. This new PhD research, facilitated through unique access to Irish policymakers and companies, has been used in World Bank seminars and other international forums. [ART & DESIGN] Thursday 3rd May 10.00am - 5.00pm, Interface, Belfast campus Workshop/Demonstration Advanced Textile Patterning Techniques: Digital Directions This is the third in the series of specialist workshops/demonstrations in Advanced Textile Patterning Techniques. ‘Digital Directions’ will consist of a short presentation on ‘Digital directions of the Textile and Fashion Industry’ by a specialist working in the field of digital textiles. This will be followed by a workshop/ demonstration on the different digital printing and patterning techniques available within the Fabric Forward Workshop. Frequently working with local jazz hero Gay McIntyre, the ensemble’s repertoire is an eclectic and up-beat mix of jazz standards, famous funk tracks and contemporary pieces. Her songs are lush, complex landscapes of love, loss, passion and inspiration and her pioneering sound owes much to the likes of Ray Charles, Junior Mance, Diamanda Galas and Rachelle Ferrell. Though equipped with an extensive repertoire of jazz standards, she chooses to focus on her own original music for voice and piano.
