Atsushi Tamura (piano)
Atsushi studied piano at the Tokyo College of
Music and in 2001 was a finalist in the Piano
Teachers’ Association competition in Japan; he
went on to be a finalist in the prestigious Berga
Piano Competition in Spain the following
year. He has a Master’s degree from the Royal
Welsh College of Music and Drama and is
now studying at the Magee campus on the
PhD in Performance programme, focusing
on the music of Rachmaninoff. Over the last
two years he has delighted audiences with his
recital and concerto performances.

TV Aesthetics
Dr Karen Lury, University of Glasgow, will
demonstrate how the formal analysis of
television may work to ‘open up’ the texts of
television in interesting ways. Focusing on the
formal organisation of sound in the American
crime drama, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,
the presentation will address the various
aspects of ‘sound’ – voice, sound effects,
ambient sound and music – orchestrated
within the programme. This formal analysis
will then be linked to the spiritual or religious
associations of ‘sound’ and hearing, which
could suggest that the lead investigator's
increasing deafness over seasons one to
three of the programme acts not only as a
mechanical problem in relation to solving
crime but as a spiritual or religious crisis for
the character and for the series itself.

Advanced Textile
Patterning Techniques:
Metamorphosis of
Materials
This is the second in a series of specialist
workshops/demonstrations in Advanced Textile
Patterning Techniques. The workshops are
backed up with individual resource files for
participants, practical demonstrations and
hands-on interaction. They will be looking at
dyeing, manipulating and printing of fabrics.
‘Metamorphosis of Material’ will examine
the manipulation and texturing of materials
by the application of chemicals and heat,
using Shibori and alternative resist patterning
techniques.
