(5) The Zand chapter 1 <strong>re</strong>fers to <strong>the</strong> <strong>four</strong>th age as <strong>the</strong> one 'when<br />

thy tenth century will be at an end, O Spitaman Zarathusht'.<br />

This phrase is <strong>re</strong>peated later in 4:16, and <strong>the</strong><strong>re</strong> is also a<br />

variant <strong>of</strong> it, 'that tenth century, which will be <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> thy<br />

millenium' (4.41).<br />

(6) Flusser points out that it is only in Zoroastrian sources that<br />

we find <strong>the</strong> combination <strong>of</strong> <strong>four</strong> ages/<strong>four</strong> metals/ten periods.<br />

He concludes <strong>the</strong><strong>re</strong>fo<strong>re</strong> that Persian sources a<strong>re</strong> <strong>the</strong> ultimate<br />

<strong>origin</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se motifs when <strong>the</strong>y occur in <strong>the</strong> Sibylline Oracles,<br />

Daniel, Jewish apocalyptic, and rabbinical literatu<strong>re</strong>.<br />

III. The Four Empi<strong>re</strong>s in Daniel<br />

The argument concerning <strong>the</strong> provenance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>origin</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sequence <strong>of</strong> world powers is <strong>re</strong>asonable. So is Swain's suggestion<br />

that it was mediated to <strong>the</strong> Romans by Persian colonists in Asia<br />

Minor. However, <strong>the</strong> assumption that <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> Daniel 2<br />

consciously borrowed and adapted this <strong>scheme</strong> deserves<br />

scrutiny. If <strong>the</strong> order intended in Daniel 2 is: Babylonian,<br />

Persian, Macedonian, Roman, <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> borrowing is<br />

superfluous. The sequence simply <strong>re</strong>flects <strong>the</strong> historical <strong>re</strong>ality<br />

experienced by a Jew living in Babylonia or Judaea. If what is<br />

intended is <strong>the</strong> sequence: Babylonian, Median, Persian,<br />

Macedonian, <strong>the</strong> inclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Median Empi<strong>re</strong> is odd since<br />

<strong>the</strong> Medes never gained control <strong>of</strong> Babylonia or Judaea. Swain 21<br />

explained this oddity by <strong>the</strong> suggestion that <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong><br />

Daniel 2 included <strong>the</strong> Medes because he adhe<strong>re</strong>d to <strong>the</strong><br />

traditional <strong>scheme</strong>, apart from <strong>the</strong> need to <strong>re</strong>place Assyria by<br />

Babylon, and because in any case his knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period<br />

was sketchy. With <strong>re</strong>gard to this point it must suffice he<strong>re</strong> to<br />

say that <strong>the</strong> imagery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ram in chapter 8 indicates an<br />

accurate knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>re</strong>lationship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Median and<br />

Persian <strong>empi<strong>re</strong>s</strong> which should make one cautious about<br />
