Dear IBL Families,
“The Homework Battle”
Do you find yourself
Teacher Appreciation
Over the past week we have celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week. The IBL PTO provided the staff
with a wonderful lunch, and students and families have been making a point to thank their teachers. It is clear
by the special things that people have been doing that teachers here are appreciated for the valuable work they
do. Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School is lucky to have such a caring, dedicated, and knowledgeable staff. If you
haven’t done so already, thank a teacher for all that they do!
6 th graders: Get your T-dap Immunizations Now
California law requires that all students entering 7 th grade need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster
shot (Tdap), received after their 7 th birthday, before starting school in the fall. Please take your child to their
physician, get them vaccinated, and bring documentation of the Tdap vaccine to the IBL office as soon as
possible. Students without this documentation will not be able to start 7 th grade without it. Many local health
departments offer free or low-cost vaccines. Your local pharmacy may also give Tdap and other vaccines for a
fee. More information is available at shotsforschools.org.
Boys and Girls Club
As many of you are aware, the Boys and Girls Clubs of North San Mateo County provides an invaluable service
to our students by offering an after school program for all middle school students in the district. Over 90% of
the students who attend the program are IBL students. In recent years the program has been operating with a
deficit (@ 80K per year). Though the goal of the program is to provide families the support free of service, the
reality is that we will have to increase the fees to continue to have the program on our campus. Please look for
communication from us and the Boys and Girls Clubs organization to inform you of what the new fees will be.
Elna Flynn Dinner
Please join us to honor Cristal Pepin as our 2013 Elna Flynn Outstanding Volunteer. The banquet will be held
on Friday, May 31 st at Nick’s Restaurant. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased through the front
office.
Respectfully,
Donald West
May 2013
The end of the school year can get pretty hectic – there are graduations, end of the year field trips, state
testing and much more! In the midst of all this craziness, quite a few issues have come to my attention
and I wanted to make sure to address them before the end of the year. I couldn’t decide on just one topic,
so here are a few tips, suggestions, and resources for students, parents and teachers.
1. BULLYING
Here are some online resources for parents and students that offer suggestions for how to
deal with bullying situations:
http://www.thebullyproject.com/ - The BULLY Project is the social action campaign
inspired by the award-winning film BULLY.
www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov - This site discusses what middle school kids
can do if they are victimized by or witness bullying, or if they bully
others.
www.bullies2buddies.com - This website is dedicated to reducing bullying
and aggression by teaching student’s alternative coping strategies.
2. INTERNET SAFETY
It is important that we teach our students how to stay safe when using technology and the
Internet. These websites can help you talk to your child about staying safe online.
www.cskcst.com - Helps young people learn how to use the Internet safely and responsibly.
www.bnetsavvy.org - A one-stop website for adults. Designed to help educators and parents
learn more about the risks and opportunities of technology and to better guide young teens
in using social technology
www.netsmartz.org - NetSmartz is an interactive, educational safety resource from the
National Center for Missing & Exploited Children ® (NCMEC) and Boys & Girls Clubs of
America (BGCA). It aims to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet.
3. STUDY SKILLS
Often times I find that students don’t know how to study. Here are a few websites that
teach students the study skills that are necessary in order to be a successful student.
www.how-to-study.com - This website helps students gain specific study strategies for
different subjects.
www.studygs.net - Helps students prepare, learn and retain information. Offers many
different suggestions on how students can study at home.
www.howtostudy.org - This website guides students through the study process. It discusses
the importance of setting goals and managing time.
Hello fellow PTO members-
“Every end is a new beginning”. Proverb
The year is coming to an end and what a year it has been! I want to thank the PTO board members
and committee members for all the hard work that went into this year. We have raised funds through
eating pizza, selling cookie dough, shopping at Fresh and Easy, Fog Fest, Escrip, eating at the Surf
Spot, See’s Candy, Under the Sea, kind donations, the Big Raffle, and many other ways. This all
takes dedication and determination, but this board got it done! I also want to say thank you to parents
for your support through your donation of time, goods and money- we all make a great team!
Just a small side note- Thank you and Congratulations to our Co-president Janeen Castenada and
her family on their new addition to the family. We wish you happiness with your new bundle!
During our PTO meetings we are very fortunate to have a teacher rep attend. Rachel Merlot was our
teacher and we just wanted to say Thank you and Congratulations to you on your new bundle. Next
year, we look forward to her and baby attending meetings so that we can take turns holding baby…
Over the weekend we had our Chocolate Fest and eWaste events- A huge THANK YOU to
Cynthia Lotti and her team for an amazing day. When you walked into the MPR room it felt like you
were in the Candyland game. Char Hilo got the cake walk started. The fun included a chocolate
fountain, a Velcro wall, video games, carnival games and lots of yummy food!
I am also sending out a big “thank you” to Heather and Mr. Garcia for facilitating the
eWaste event. I am not sure how many pounds of electronics were collected but when I pulled up at
9:30 there was a lot of eWaste that had already been dropped off.
NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER
Scholastic Book Fair- Spring 2013
We received $532.00 in books and $745.25 in cash from the book fair. Students will surely
enjoy reading all the new and exciting books! With our limited budget, the library staff works
hard to update our collection and add titles that are not only consistent with the curriculum but
interesting to students.
We would like to thank Magda Carranza, Deena Grover, Sneha Patel, Linda Prisajni, Sachita
McCarthy, Michelle Skoufos, Teresita Stevens, and Paula Sutar for all their help setting up and
working the book fair throughout the week.
Our student volunteers were Nancy Blanchard, Stacey Catalina, Mariah O’Shea, Karina Patel,
and Ellie Smith. They did an excellent job. Thank you!
A special thank you to Tina Yannazzo who has been the Book Fair Chairperson for the past
NINE YEARS!!! Even though her daughters graduated from IBL a long time ago, she still
volunteers and effortlessly puts together our book fairs. Thank you, Tina!
We would also like to acknowledge our faithful library volunteers: Paula Sutar, Sachita
McCarthy, Laverne Villalobos, Miki Hensley, Teresita Stevens, Dee Dee Pagan, Susan
DePriest, Goong Rau, Ida Petitt, Tina Yannazzo, Magda Carranza, Nicole Ortega, Michelle
Skoufos, and Sneha Patel. These ladies come in to the library every week and help keep the
library clean and running smoothly. The library could not serve students all day without the
help of these wonderful volunteers!
