HighGear
Edition 8•August 2010
Vol. 52
from the president Rex Heck, President
In my occasional
series on the operation
of the club, I
want to write about
how the board of
directors is selected.
Some of you new
members—and probably some of the
old-timers—may not be aware that
RMR is incorporated as a non-profit
corporation. We have done very well at
the non-profit part. However, as such,
we have to have a constitution and
bylaws. One section of the bylaws
requires us to have annual elections
for the board of directors, the
members of which serve for a one-calendar-year
term. The board consists of
eight members: president, vice president,
second vice president, secretary,
treasurer, membership chair, newsletter
editor and past president. The
bylaws give specific rules as to how
and when the process should proceed.
If you have insomnia, you can read the
complete document at the RMR Web
site (find it under the Info tab).
The first step in the board selection
process starts in August with the
appointment of a nominating committee.
I know this seems early, but there
is a lot to do. The membership of the
nominating committee shall consist of
the president, past president and one
or more active members. In addition to
Dave Speights and myself, Susan
Bucknam will be serving on the committee.
The committee will interview
prospective board members and report
a recommended slate of nominations
to the board at the September board
meeting. This will allow time for each
candidate to prepare a biography, to
be published in the October issue of
High Gear.
At the October membership meeting,
the candidates will be presented to the
members. At the November meeting,
additional nominations can
be made by any active member. If
there are no additional nominations,
then the proposed nominees are
elected. Or, if there are additional
nominees, then there will be an election
by mail, in which a ballot will be
mailed to all active members.
Announcement of the results of the
election and swearing in of the new
officers will occur at the December
membership meeting, which is usually
the holiday party. If anyone is
interested in serving on the board or
would like additional information, contact
one of the nominating committee
members.
The board receives several requests
each year for donations to charity
organizations. In the past, these have
been handed out on a first-come, firstserved
basis until the money ran out.
Not always the best way to make a
decision, unless you are quick with
your request. To add some organization
to the process, I have created a charity
committee. The committee, which will
be given an annual budget, will review
requests for donations and make recommendations
to the board. In
addition to the monetary donations,
the committee will look for opportunities
for the club to get out into the
community and work with
organizations. The club has done a lot
of good things in the past, but most
have been invisible to anyone except
the participants. I would like to see us
get out into the community as a club
and support some of these organizations.
I have nothing specific in mind,
but I am sure many of our members
have favorite groups that could use
our support. Nancy Warren and Camilla
Rosenberger have agreed to co-chair
the committee. Contact them with
offers to serve on the committee or
any suggestions.
August Membership Social
How Does a Porschephile say “Aloha”? Let’s Find Out!
Sure you can drive, you drive a Porsche... but you can’t
drive to Hawaii. Or can you?
This month, you’ll be able to get close, because
the theme for the August social gathering of RMR
members is a genuine poolside Hawaiian luau.
That’s right. Exchange your Porsche T-shirt for
that Hawaiian print which has been collecting dust
since your last trip to the Islands, and come on down...
Saturday, Aug. 7, 6-10:30pm.
Please note the date; we’re moving the August date to the
first Saturday of the month, this month only.
Here’s the location; do a search:
Stonegate Village Pool
10326 Stonegate Parkway
Parker, CO 80134
Or we’ll make it easy for you: From Lincoln
Avenue, turn south onto Stonegate Parkway,
go approximately two blocks; the pool and
community center will be on the left. Please
enter the community center on the south end of
the building (just north of the tennis courts).
Genuine Hawaiian fare, music and fun. It’s the
Aloha spirit, coming to Denver. Mahalo!
Last month saw
the spectacle of the
annual Porsche
Parade arrive in St.
Charles, Illinois. The
Parade hosts numerous
competitions,
including the news letter competition
between the numerous Regions. This
year, top honors (the Paul R. Heinmiller
Award) went to Pacific Northwest
Region’s Spiel (Barb Coplen, editor). A
bit closer to home, AMR’s Mountain
Passages earned second place in Class
3 (Regions with 200-399 members).
Congratulations to editor Phyllis Godfredson
on a job well done!
On the heels of Parade was the 24
Hours of LeMons, a traveling race
series that landed at High Plains Raceway
for a weekend. Although LeMons is
not a PCA event, the siren song of
wheel-to-wheel racing on the cheap
lured a number of RMR and AMR members
to participate. A couple of dozen
of us joined a five-car team, organized
by Chris Lennon and kept on the
road—for the most part—by mechanical
magician Loren Southard and his
band of merry men. The team even
featured a “celebrity” driver: National
PCA President Kurt Gibson, who barely
had a chance to catch his breath from
Parade before appearing at HPR. (Read
more about Kurt’s impressions of
LeMons on page 8.)
Wheel-to-wheel racing—in a somewhat
less-insane form than LeMons—is
coming back to HPR this month, in
what has quickly become one of my
favorite RMR events of the year: the
Club Race. If you’ve never been to a
PCA club race before, it is quite something
to behold—attracting, as it does,
racers from around the western US and
even across the country. And the track
is actually a somewhat comfortable
place to hang out this year, with a covered
trackside pavilion, flushing toilets
and running water (ahh, progress!).
You’ll find me out in the corners with
camera in hand to capture the action,
or on the grid helping to stage cars.
Legions of volunteers are needed to
put on a race, so consider coming out
and being part of the fun! See page 6
for more details.
Finally, this month I hope you’ll
notice a new feature that has long
been missing from the RMR newsletter:
A technical column! This month,
Boxster/Cayman specialist Doug
Bartlett walks us through the process
of bleeding the hydraulic clutch in a
986/987. This is a fairly simple task
that requires only moderate
contortions to access the bleed screw
on the side of the transmission housing.
Check it out on page 18. I hope to
make the technical column a regular
feature of High Gear, but I need your
help! If you are mechanically savvy
enough to work on your own Porsche
(or especially other people’s Porsches),
here’s your chance to show off your
mechanical genius: Help write a tech
article for High Gear! We’ll even assist
with the writing and photography, if
you like. Give me a call or send me an
e-mail if you’re interested.
The dog days of summer
are here...
The summer has been
very busy, with lots of
Porsche Club events for
both Rocky Mountain
Region and Alpine
Mountain Region. We had another great
turnout at the July Membership Social,
held at Stevinson Imports. A fun time was
had by all!
There are many Porsche Club events
for the month of August. The 7th (note
the new date!) will be the Membership
Luau (page 2). AMR’s Tourpalooza will be
August 6th–8th. The Concours
d’Elegance (opposite page) is Sunday,
August 8th (rescheduled from June 13th)
at Arapahoe Community College. Another
great event is coming up on August 14th
and 15th: The Club Race and Super DE,
to be held at High Plains Raceway. And,
August 21st is the 4th Annual Drive for
the Kids (page 15), to benefit the
Children’s Hospital Sports Program. This
will be a great tour for a great cause!
Andy Keller, 35-year PCA member
Andrew David “Andy” Keller passed
away July 13, 2010 at Longmont United
Hospital as a result of advanced cancer.
He was 68.
Andy was born April 20, 1942 in Faribault,
Minnesota to Andrew Harold and
Marjorie Ann (Kroenke) Keller, where he
grew up and graduated from high
school.
He earned his undergraduate degree
Feb. 1968. While at Ft. Lee, Virginia, he
worked on design and safety improvements
for a personnel carrier which
were adopted by the Army; of this he
was very proud. He was Honorably Discharged
Feb. 10, 1972.
He married Anne Moore on August 8,
1970 in Endicott, New York.
the Baptist Catholic Church,
where he served as a Eucharistic
minister and Reader at
Mass. He was a member of
Chapter 1313 Knights of Columbus.
A strong community citizen,
Andy was active in many organizations
including the Longmont
Chamber of Commerce; a
strong advocate for the Longmont
Symphony Orchestra,
where he was currently serving
on the Board of Directors and
had for many years organized
the Young Artists competition;
and a supporter of the
Longmont Public Library.
Andy was a member of the
Longmont Luncheon Optimist
Club and American Legion Post
#32; numerous car clubs, including the
27th Annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance
Sunday, August 8 • 9 AM-3 PM • Arapahoe Community College • 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton
Admission: $10, to benefit United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado
The Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance is one of
the largest gatherings of priceless automobiles in Colorado.
We expect that more than 400 treasured cars—from early classics
and collector cars to vintage race cars and current models—will be
on display. Many of these incredible cars come out only once a year
for this show, to help the Cerebral Palsy children.
Nearly 100 local and regional car clubs, businesses and media
sponsors draw more than 10,000 spectators to generate funds for
United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado. Now in its 27th year, the Exotic
Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance has become one of the
grandest, most entertaining and most anticipated car shows in Colorado!
To date, this spectacular event has raised over $1,000,000
for United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado’s Creative Options Early Education
Centers. These five centers provide early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services to
expectant mothers and nearly 800 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families each year. Another 750
children are on waiting lists.
August 2010
this wonderful trait firsthand, having
been asked by Chris and Kathleen
Lennon to be a part of a multi-car PCA
effort at the 24 Hours of LeMons race
held at High Plains Raceway.
My schedule was jammed, starting
with an opportunity to compete in the
One Lap of America race, closely
followed by the 55th Porsche Parade at
St. Charles, Illinois, ending on Friday
night about midnight... and the 24 Hours
of LeMons event starting at 9 AM the
next day, outside Denver, Colorado!
So... when Chris extended the invitation
to be a part of the OktoberPests 944
team, I had reservations about whether
the timing could work. As well as reservations
about how I would fit into a team
when I could not lend a hand in preparation
of the car! Then there was the fact
I’d never driven “our” race car... or
driven High Plains Raceway! Chris was a
convincing salesman... the LeMons
event was on my bucket list... I have a
tolerant and patient wife... and our
motto is, “We can rest when we get old”!
Shelby Struthers
OktoberPests team driver Alan Struthers prepares for battle.
Wow, am I glad I did! Members from
the Rocky Mountain and Alpine Mountain
Regions, my teammates on the Oktober-
Pests team, as well as a host of other
PCA members who stopped by, made
the event truly memorable. Demonstrating
the finest in PCA traditions, we all
pitched in to finish the last-minute tasks
and continued to work well together all
weekend long. Team Captain Art Rancis
and wife Sue had the details worked out
down to the minute, including a wonderful
dinner Saturday evening after the
racing stopped. Everyone was friendly
and we worked as a team to advance
several cars to the finish line. I’m sure
you’ll read the details of the race elsewhere
in this newsletter, but I wanted to
write a short note to thank everyone
involved and congratulate RMR/AMR for
a great effort at this event. [Look for
Chris Lennon’s full report in an upcoming
issue of Porsche Panorama -Ed.]
I’m pleased to report again... “It’s not
just the cars, it’s the people.” You guys
are great!

Ladies’ Day is always a favorite with
RMR members, instructors and friends
from fellow car clubs. This year was no
exception, and we had an all-time-high
turnout: 71 cars—including Porsches of
many types, from 914 to GT3, and the
odd Ferrari, Maserati, Corvette and
BMW.
76 drivers and their loyal supporters
braved record heat and wind gusts that
sent floor mats and sun shades swirling
into the sky. We had two full run groups
Ladies’ Day isn’t just for Porsches!
come newcomers. Registrar Kristie
Widrig worked long hours to get oh-somany
driver’s packets prepared before
7 AM on event day. RMR’s staff of
instructors turned out in droves, and
many of the never-ever drivers said
that working with their instructor made
all the difference in their confidence on
the track.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship
of Woodward Wealth Management, the
Ladies’ Day drivers, instructors and pit
crew were well-fed and feted all day.
Byers General Store catered a wonder-
Manager Glenn Conser for that lastminute
beer run!
And, let’s not forget what has to be
the first-ever Tupperware Party at a
racetrack. We were delighted to have
with us Joannie Flynn, who’s been representing
Tupperware for more than 50
years, so that folks could replenish their
collections. (Except for Linda Ruff,
whose already-impressive collection
in the zone Sean Cridland, PCA Zone 9 Representative
My main activity as
your Zone Rep this
month centered
around Porsche
Parade 2010 at St.
Charles, Illinois. For
those of you who have
been to a Parade, you
know that it’s one of the major highlights
of any Porsche owner’s activity schedule.
For those who haven’t been yet, put it on
your schedule; you won’t regret it. For
those of us from Zone 9 who witnessed
or participated in RMR and AMR cooperating
to organize last year’s Parade at
Keystone, the big question this year was,
“Would it be as good?” Or, since last
year was the final year of Parade being
organized by Regions, and this year was
the first of the Parades organized by the
National Parade staff, would it succeed?
Let me answer those two questions first.
Was Parade as good in St. Charles as it
was in Keystone? No and yes. Did it have
the Rocky Mountains and the twisty highways
of Summit County? No. Were the
events fun and exciting? Yes! I’m calling
this Parade (one of only three in my
repertoire, miniscule in comparison to
some Parade-goers) the “People’s
Parade.” Perhaps it’s because of my
experience getting there and the kinds of
events I participated in this time. First, I
didn’t take a Porsche with me this time.
That meant that instead of participating
in the competitive events, I spent more
time on social activities and volunteering.
It was an entirely different kind of
Parade experience for me and one that I
really enjoyed. There are so many great
people who make up PCA across the
country! It was great to visit with so
many people from around our Zone and
from many other Regions and Zones,
too. Adding to that experience was the
fact that I didn’t take Interstate highways
the whole way getting there. I punched
the address into my trusty Garmin and
let it take me where it would. That meant
two-lane roads through the Texas and
Oklahoma Panhandles and southern
Kansas, and then on to the bigger roads
in Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois. We read so
much about our “great country,” but
most of us never really experience it
other than by staring out the window of a
jet or whizzing past it on the Interstate.
To drive through all the small towns and
see where people are living, what they’re
doing for work and what they’re driving
gave me a much better perspective on
what’s happening in the country. But
that’s a different article. Nonetheless, it
did affect how I perceived Parade.
As much as I have loved the spectacle
of the Parades I’ve attended in San Diego
and Keystone, I got a whole new appreciation
for what Parade is by attending the
one in St. Charles. Like PCA itself, Parade
is not just about flash and show and
showing off. It’s about seeing our friends
from past events and meeting new ones
as we appreciate the machinery and
brand we love in our Porsches. Some of
us own many rare and collectible cars.
Some of us have exotic, expensive, highpowered
newer models. And some of us
have the same car that we purchased
many years ago and haven’t quite got
around to doing all the updates we’d like
to do. Nonetheless, we all like the marque
and we like socializing with each
other. My drive to and my experience in
St. Charles brought that into focus for
me. Instead of running off to participate
in a mountainous drive or to Sea World
or the beach, we tended to spend time
with each other, either talking about
cars, or the World Cup of soccer, or the
start of the Tour de
France, or whatever racing was on, or
just catching up on family and
friendships. I guess this has always gone
on at Parade. Maybe I just noticed it
more this year. In any case, in my
retinue, St. Charles has become what I’ll
call the “People’s Parade.”
Parades aren’t like the Olympics, which
feel a duty to constantly outdo one
another, ever upping the ante to
outspend or out-spectacle the previous
one. Parade is about taking a journey
with friends and loved ones to enjoy the
company of other people who enjoy what
we do, and going to parts of the country—that
we might not normally think of
as “destinations”—to see what’s going
on in other parts of the American
Porsche scene. That can mean beachside
or mountain resorts, but it can also mean
hidden midwestern gems and small-town
locales surrounded by thousands of
square miles of corn, wheat, and
soybean fields. It can mean visiting
places where Porsches are commonplace
or where they are exotic.
National did a good job with Parade
because... like any other Parade, it was
staffed by dedicated, able-bodied and
eager volunteers from around the country,
giving their all to make events
happen smoothly and on time. Many of
the same people who have staffed and
volunteered at other Parades were there,
working just as hard to make this event
happen. Anyone who’s attended a
Parade knows that about 85% of Parade
attendees also volunteer to help with
some activity. It’s one of best ways to
meet people.
Though we often think of it as a clever
cliché, Parade really is “not just about the
cars, but the people.”
Flushing the Clutch on a
Boxster/Cayman
Whenever you flush your brake fluid,
it’s a good idea to flush out the clutch
hydraulic system too. The clutch system
uses the same fluid reservoir as
the brakes. Although the clutch doesn’t
suffer from the same extreme heat
issues as your brake, it’s a good idea to
get the old fluid out of this system too.
After you complete the normal brake
bleeding process (beyond the scope of
this article), you perform the same
process at the clutch slave cylinder
bleed screw. Finding it is a bit more
challenging than the ones for the brake
calipers, though!
Start by raising the rear of the car up
onto jack stands. Use a floor jack to
raise one side of the car via the front
2
3
18 HighGear
August 2010
jack point. The rear
will lift too, so you
can place one stand
underneath. For the
other side, raise the
car from the highly
reinforced area of
the diagonal rear
brace. The key is to
ensure that your
car is safely raised
so you can crawl
under the back end.
In Photo 1 you
can see where I
have lifted the second
side of the car. 1
I left the jack in
place for a third safety net.
Now you need to find where the
clutch slave cylinder is hidden on the
top, left side of the
transmission. Crawl
under the car and
look up between
the left rear wheel
and the gearbox,
toward the
gearbox. Photo 2
shows what you will
see.
Look a little
closer and you can
find the coil of tubing
that carries the
fluid from the master
cylinder (at the
clutch pedal) to the
slave.
Ultimately, you
will find where the
clutch fluid line
enters the
transmission and
the bleed screw
with a protective
rubber cap. (Photo
3—sorry, a bit out
of focus.)
Pull off the rubber
cap with your fingers.
Be careful not
to lose it, because
it does not have a
retaining strap like
the brake caliper
caps!
Photo 4 shows the bleed valve with
the cap removed. And if you really poke
your head (or camera) up there, Photo
5 shows what you will see.
Now at this point, you are probably
thinking, “Ah, that’s where it hides, now
for the easy part!” Well, not quite... Just
like with the brake calipers, place the
rubber tubing from your brake fluid
bleed bottle over the clutch slave bleed
screw. There isn’t a lot of room to work
up there. The hard part is positioning an
11mm wrench over the screw to loosen
it. You’ll have to attack it at an angle. A
flashlight and two hands will help. I
didn’t take pictures of this part, but if
you have previously bled your brakes,
the concepts and process are identical.
If you are using a pressurized brake
bleeding bottle like the one from
Motive, just open the screw until you
get clean fluid. If you are using the twoperson
pedal-pump method, just
remember to tell your assistant to use
the clutch pedal rather than the brake
pedal for this one!
When you get clean fluid, simply
The Good Old
Days of TV
They say the good
old days were never
really as good as you
remember. It's something
about the fact that you're looking
through rose-colored glasses. But not
me. I prefer sunglasses, anyway. Graytinted.
They're better to see the
contrast, as the sun glints
off the old Philco, watching
reruns in black and
white, the way God and
Mr. Sarnoff and Mr. Paley
intended.
One of my favorite car
episodes of all time is
from “Candid Camera.”
Yeah, yeah, the episode at
the Automat was great.
Where the guy puts his
coins in the slot, opens
the glass door, and pulls
out his tuna sandwich…
only to have a hand come
out and take it back. But
that actually had nothing
to do with cars.
The best car episode
was one that probably
would not be made today.
Check that, it definitely
would not be made today.
With apologies all
around, it's the one where
they put a lady in a car at
the top of a hill, and they
take the motor out. Then
they roll the car down the
hill… and into a gas station,
which sits at the bottom. The
woman rolls to a stop at the pump, and
she says to the attendant, “Can you
help me? Something's wrong with my
car, it won't run.”
So the mechanic opens the hood,
looks inside, looks up, incredulous, and
says, “Lady, you don't have a motor!”
And she says, “Can I get one?”
Hey, let's face it, times were different.
Just like they were on “Route 66.” Can
you hum the theme song? Not to the
road, to the show. Da da da… da da da.
No words. But they didn't need any. But,
like, what was up with Buzz and Tod?
Every episode, they were getting into
trouble, working some menial job on
the wrong side of the tracks… and then
hopping into their shiny, new…
Corvette.
And they had a new one every year
the show was on the air. Like magic.
Uh, how did they get the car in the
first place? And which one of them
owned it? Or did it matter? Or, were we,
in fact, watching the first covertly liberated
show on television?
“So perfect, it’s intriguing.....”
And, did you notice? Nothing ever
went wrong with the Vette. As if they
could afford repairs, when they were
making minimum wage, shoveling coal,
down at the train depot.
But, when the motive alternative was
“My Mother the Car” or “The Beverly
Hillbillies,” the Vette, at least, was great
to see... on prime time.
Then there's “The Dick Van Dyke
Show.” A classic. I can still hear Laura
yelling “Rooooob!” every episode.
For car lovers everywhere, one
episode stands out. It's called “Scratch
My Car and Die.” Do a search, you can
find it at Hulu.com. What happens is
Rob comes home with a brand new
Tarantula. That's the name of the car.
You never see it, but you hear it. And,
from the description, it's one sweet
ride.
“Did you notice? The door handles are
countersunk, so there's no wind resistance,
none at all. Even the ashtray…
teardrop design. And that's not chrome.
It's stainless steel.”
Rob waves the brochure at Laura and
says, “Automatics are for
old ladies. Bucket seats
and a stick shift. You settle
down in them like an astronaut.”
He goes on, “You know
what the great thing is
about this car?”
Laura replies, “You can't
bring it into the house?”
Rob tries again, “When
you look at a car like that,
what do you feel?”
“Extreme fear.”
So Rob picks up the
phone to call his friend. He
says to Laura, “What's the
point of having a new car if
you can't have your best
friend envious of you?”
And, of course, his friend
can't come over to see it
until the morning.
When Rob finds out that
Laura has to take the car
the next day, because she
has car-pool duty, and her
family station wagon is in
the garage for repairs, his
instructions are “don't park
the car under a tree, or
under a bird. And put it in the garage
before the dew forms.”
Hmmm. On second thought, maybe
some things are, indeed, eternal. Like
new car ownership. Especially if it's a
sports car. From the '60s. On television.
In black and white.
advertiser spotlight Roger Buswell, Advertising Coordinator
A Good Thing
When They See It
My boss, High Gear
editor Jeremy Rosenberger,
was recently
telling me about
unusual advertisers he
noticed while perusing newsletters from
the largest PCA regions (RMR-PCA is one
of the twenty largest regions in North
America). Since I head up advertising
sales for High Gear, he may have been
telling me this to inspire me to think “outside
the box” and call on advertising
prospects that are not otherwise obvious.
More likely, knowing Jeremy, he
mentioned it to subliminally ask the
question, “Why do organizations advertise
in the newsletter of a single-make,
private car club?”
The conventional and less-conventional
advertisements in other PCA newsletters
that caught our attention were high-end
audio sellers, auto body and upholstery
repair, various restaurants, an orphanage,
insurance bonds, realtors, financial
advisors, mortgage lenders, lawyers,
plastic surgeons (one ad even showed
the lady plastic surgeon leaning out the
window of her Cabrio while holding two
actual clear breast implants—for an
improved “Top Down Image”!), auto
detailing, car parts, office supplies, cosmetic
dentistry, racing gear, trailer sales,
custom jewelry, woodworking, banks,
fine watches, a uro-gynecologist (so the
ladies don’t have to make as many “pit
stops”), professional photography, promotional
items, spas, public relations, a
yacht club, flying lessons and custom
remodeling. With rare exception, these
advertisers appeal to people with discretionary
income. I believe these
advertisers realize that Porsche owners
know what they want and merely need to
be convinced to buy goods and services
from them.
We just signed up a brand-new advertiser
that fits that bill. Patrick Rupas is the
sales manager for the Sprinter line of
commercial trucks, built by Mercedes-
Benz and sold by Mercedes-Benz of
Littleton (a sister dealership of Prestige
Imports, one of our most loyal advertisers).
Patrick called me and wanted to
place an ad. Perhaps taking the risk of
looking a gift horse in the mouth, I asked
Patrick, “Why our magazine?” His reply
was that Porsche owners are frequently
people in important positions and may
be deciding which trucks to buy for their
commercial fleets. The Sprinter line has a
great message of high quality and features
combined with very low overall cost
per mile to operate. Patrick “gets it.” We
believe that the current advertisers in
High Gear “get it” too.
Maybe you’ve thought of ways to grow
your business. Maybe you’ve even
thought of advertising in High Gear. The
quality of High Gear has made dramatic
leaps during the last two years, as has
the overall quality of the membership
experience offered by our Region. We are
a Region on the rise, and that has commercial
appeal. Today may be the day to
jump into the fray and become an advertiser
with us. Give me a call at
we can help your business thrive.
what we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have
fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses,
rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities
to enjoy and learn about your Porsche.
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in
which participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in
advance). A tour may vary in length from a day
trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or
two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which
are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting
or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes
combined with rallies to add variety and a dose
of competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR
typically offers several. A number of tours are
usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified by a
set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on
public, paved roads, and speed limits are always
observed. The two major types of rallies are the
Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick
rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to
follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the
correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving
at checkpoints (the locations of which are
not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick
rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually
involves solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at
least one of each type—are offered. Porsche
Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a
Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined by
orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top
speeds are generally moderate, topping out
around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear
for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at
long intervals—typically only one or two cars
are on the course at any time. Autocross is a
safe way to experience high-performance driving
while learning to drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially
an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new members.
Historically, a membership meeting begins
with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by
the evening’s program. The content of the program
varies, sometimes featuring a “slide
show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker
such as accomplished Speed World Challenge
racer Randy Pobst.
RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise
stated, are held the first Thursday of the month.
Different venues and topics will keep the meetings
fresh and inviting. Watch High Gear and the
RMR Web site for details. And if you have any
ideas for a program, talk to the Program Committee
Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like—a session
in which a technical topic is discussed. Not
just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate
practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures
such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually
presented by experienced Porsche
Driving Events
Non-Driving Events
an AX school in the spring. Additionally,
autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe, controlled
environment for high-performance
driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill
levels the opportunity to hone their driving
skills, with the help of an experienced instructor,
in a controlled, closed-course environment.
In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary
emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of
warning, though: the DE experience may be
habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However,
some DE events are followed immediately by a
time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to
quantify their performance. Lap times may then
be used to measure personal improvement, for
bragging rights, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the
La Junta, Pueblo, and (possibly in the future)
Pikes Peak International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A
race weekend consists of a number of practice
sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often
involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.
As a Club Racing license (issued by PCA
National) is required for competition, club racers
are serious and experienced drivers. The cars
they bring with them to the track can be quite
impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club
Racing program was inaugurated with the RMRhosted
“First Ever Anywhere” club race at
Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event of
this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of
volunteers. However, a club race is also one of
most exciting events to participate in, so be
sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High
Plains Raceway which, combined with the
“Super DE” event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!
technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR
events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically
in the “off months” when few driving
events take place. In addition, numerous tech
sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in as
close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number
of judged categories usually exist, typically
differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,
Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver”
or “full preparation” or somewhere in between).
Cars sometimes may be entered as “display
only,” for owners who wish to participate but
not compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local concours
events each year, including the annual Exotic
Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting
United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The
annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours
each year.
