Situation<br />

As one of the more progressive firms in<br />

its industry, Deloitte is committed to<br />

refreshing its IT platform every three to<br />

four years.<br />

In early 2008, Deloitte decided to embark<br />

on a hardware and operating system<br />

(from Windows XP to Windows Vista)<br />

refresh exercise for the majority of its<br />

staff.<br />

Due to the nature of its business, 70% of<br />

Deloitte’s staff are highly mobile, working<br />

on-site at the clients’ premises. As such,<br />

a heavy emphasis is placed on the<br />

robustness, security, and ease of<br />

administration and management<br />

notebooks issued to its staff.<br />

Solution<br />

From the onset, there was only one<br />

obvious choice for Wong Kum Wai,<br />

Deloitte’s employees have been using<br />

With the opinion that IT hardware has<br />

long become a commodity, Wong said<br />

that organisations should not be just<br />

looking at the lowest priced hardware or<br />

solutions as necessarily the best choice.<br />

Vendors today offer very competitive<br />

pricing for their products.<br />

Rather, he believes in looking at the<br />

bigger picture – vendors that offer<br />

services around their hardware at a<br />

reasonable price for a lower total cost of<br />

ownership.<br />

Based on his experience managing a<br />

large organisation IT infrastructure, Wong<br />

points out that the cost of services such<br />

as repairs and maintenance can and will<br />

drive up the total cost of ownership over a<br />

period of time.<br />

“Organisations can’t view their vendors<br />

as just mere hardware providers<br />

anymore. They have to select a vendor<br />

that is highly service-driven, offering a<br />

high quality level of service and timely<br />

delivery at a reasonable price. <strong>Lenovo</strong> is<br />

able to meet this requirement and<br />

beyond,” said Wong.<br />

The 500 units of <strong>ThinkPad</strong> T400 are<br />

covered by on-site warranty. <strong>Lenovo</strong><br />

provides comprehensive on-site service<br />

to Deloitte offices within Malaysia.<br />

This level of service enables Wong’s IT<br />

team is able to focus on more important<br />

IT tasks that are core to Deloitte’s<br />

business – further lowering the total cost<br />

of ownership without having to dedicate<br />

additional management resources.<br />

Additionally, the low failure rate of the<br />

extremely robust T400 reduces the<br />

down-time associated with repairs.<br />

Looking Ahead<br />

Moving forward, Wong is evaluating the<br />

possibility of moving onto the Windows 7<br />

platform in 2010. While this is another<br />

major technology refresh exercise for<br />

Deloitte, Wong knows that <strong>Lenovo</strong> will be<br />

able to once again deliver the goods.<br />
