Menu Jeopardy
Here’s yet another approach to make product knowledge
training fun. And, as you probably know, fun is a key ingredient
in any training session. It keeps employees interested
and entertained, and improves the prospects of your training
concepts sinking in.
What You’ll Need
• A fl ip chart or other large writing surface.
• Your Menu Jeopardy board.
• Prizes for the winning team.
• The book Service That Sells! The Art of Profi table
Hospitality. The product knowledge sections in
chapter three are suggested reading for your staff .
Getting Started
1. Before your pre-shift meeting, arrange fi ve food or
beverage categories in your Menu Jeopardy board
and compose fi ve answers for each category.
2. At the meeting, ask your staff to count off in ones
and twos, and then split into two teams.
3. Begin the game. Unlike the TV version, in which the
last person to score gets to call the shots, have your
teams take turns choosing categories and amounts.
Each category must be answered by a diff erent team
member, so that everyone’s product knowledge is
tested. A correct answer is worth the points represented
in the square.
4. After all 25 answers have been read, tally the points
for each team and award the winners with lottery
tickets or some other fun, inexpensive prizes.
5. Wrap up the contest with a discussion on eff ective
ways to describe the items featured in Menu Jeopardy
to guests.
