return to German eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and l<strong>at</strong>e-<br />

night t<strong>in</strong>ker<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>in</strong> 2000, with a modestly improved<br />

budget and a very supportive wife and<br />

daughter, I purchased a well-used 1978<br />

911SC. Car #29 has endured four years of<br />

track use, four years of t<strong>in</strong>ker<strong>in</strong>g and one<br />

or two "off-track excursions."<br />

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time serv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Board this year and would like to<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue to serve. I have learned a gre<strong>at</strong><br />

deal and I am gr<strong>at</strong>eful for an excuse to<br />

spend time with some of <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est people I<br />

have come to know…Rocky Mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

Region Porsche Club of America members.<br />

Treasurer<br />

Bill Curnow<br />

It started <strong>in</strong> 1966 when my friend (Dave)<br />

was driv<strong>in</strong>g his fa<strong>the</strong>r's MGB convertible<br />

with me <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> passenger se<strong>at</strong>. We were<br />

digg<strong>in</strong>g ourselves when we tipped <strong>the</strong> car<br />

over on <strong>the</strong> on ramp to US 285 from<br />

Sheridan Blvd. We tipped it back on 4<br />

wheels and prepared for <strong>the</strong> worst. After<br />

<strong>the</strong> assessment was done of <strong>the</strong> once sh<strong>in</strong>y<br />

MGB, Dave's fa<strong>the</strong>r determ<strong>in</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> maybe<br />

th<strong>at</strong> new Porsche 911 would be a safer car!<br />

A few weeks l<strong>at</strong>er we had <strong>the</strong> "new" car<br />

out and I knew th<strong>at</strong> I would have one<br />

someday. I actually told people of this<br />

desire, and <strong>the</strong>y just laughed <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> silly<br />

high school kid th<strong>at</strong> had no idea of <strong>the</strong> eco-<br />

nomics of such folly.<br />

Twenty years l<strong>at</strong>er it came true with <strong>the</strong><br />

1986 Carrera Targa, because of a wonder-<br />

ful wife and a gullible banker. It probably<br />

was not <strong>the</strong> perfect car for a family of 5 (3<br />

kids ages 9,7 and 5, but <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> time it was<br />

just wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> silly "middle age" guy need-<br />

ed.<br />

Here it is 18 years passed, and 5 Porsches<br />

l<strong>at</strong>er, and th<strong>at</strong> same silly guy th<strong>in</strong>ks th<strong>at</strong> it<br />

is time to help out with <strong>the</strong> Porsche Club<br />

th<strong>at</strong> has given to much enjoyment and<br />

friendship to myself and still wonderful<br />

wife (K<strong>at</strong>hy) and <strong>the</strong> same three (now<br />

adult) kids th<strong>at</strong> love to particip<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

events of our region.<br />

It is said th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> busiest people are <strong>the</strong><br />

ones th<strong>at</strong> get asked to do more, and th<strong>at</strong> is<br />

<strong>the</strong> way with <strong>the</strong> folks th<strong>at</strong> have run and<br />

organized <strong>the</strong> club s<strong>in</strong>ce I became a mem-<br />

ber back <strong>in</strong> 1995. The now silly "50 some-<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g" guy figures th<strong>at</strong> if he can help out<br />

with <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> club now, he<br />

might have more fun and get to know even<br />

more gre<strong>at</strong> folks. Soooo, I want <strong>the</strong> fun<br />

and <strong>the</strong> future friends and I am will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

do <strong>the</strong> job as Treasurer for <strong>the</strong> organiza-<br />

tion, so <strong>the</strong> fun for all of us will cont<strong>in</strong>ue!<br />

Thanks to all <strong>the</strong> folks <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past th<strong>at</strong> have<br />

given us <strong>the</strong> Porsche Club and opportunity<br />

for us to enjoy motor sports <strong>at</strong> its best, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> members of RMR!<br />

I bought my first Porsche about seven<br />

years ago, a ’97 Boxster. In 2002, a friend<br />

suggested th<strong>at</strong> I jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Club to drive <strong>in</strong><br />

Club events and improve my driv<strong>in</strong>g skills.<br />

I jo<strong>in</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> year, and was hooked <strong>at</strong> my<br />

first DE <strong>at</strong> Second Creek.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs th<strong>at</strong> impressed me most<br />

(beyond <strong>the</strong> thrill of driv<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> track)<br />

was how well organized <strong>the</strong> Club is and<br />

how smoothly it oper<strong>at</strong>es. Of course, I<br />

soon realized this was because of all <strong>the</strong><br />

dedic<strong>at</strong>ed volunteers. In my second year <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Club, Susan Bucknam and P<strong>at</strong><br />

Newman shanghaied me <strong>in</strong>to co-chair<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an event <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year. S<strong>in</strong>ce th<strong>at</strong><br />

time, I have co-chaired two events, have<br />

served as corner worker chair or co-chair<br />

and have assisted <strong>in</strong> control <strong>at</strong> numerous<br />

events, have helped run <strong>the</strong> Corner Worker<br />

School, and have served as Tech Inspection<br />

Chair.<br />

I would be honored to serve on <strong>the</strong> board,<br />

and I believe I could make a genu<strong>in</strong>e con-<br />

tribution to <strong>the</strong> Club <strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong> level, especial-<br />

ly as we move forward on a new track to<br />

replace Second Creek. Much of <strong>the</strong> work I<br />

do <strong>in</strong> my priv<strong>at</strong>e practice <strong>in</strong>volves corpo-<br />

r<strong>at</strong>e governance and bus<strong>in</strong>ess m<strong>at</strong>ters. If<br />

elected, I would br<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> board <strong>the</strong>se<br />

skills and my commitment to <strong>the</strong> Club and<br />

my fellow members.<br />

A gre<strong>at</strong> way to meet people and make<br />

friends... The rush of adrenal<strong>in</strong>e and edge<br />

of fear right before you drive out on <strong>the</strong><br />

track... The thrill of mak<strong>in</strong>g it through a<br />

sea of autocross cones without gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lost... The exhilar<strong>at</strong>ion of driv<strong>in</strong>g over a<br />

beautiful road you would have never found<br />

on your own with a str<strong>in</strong>g a beautiful cars...<br />

These are just a few of my enthusiasms I'd<br />
