October 2005 l RMR Porsche<br />

This might all seem a bit extreme, but <strong>the</strong>y<br />

do a good job of mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rac<strong>in</strong>g very<br />

competitive. I’ve been <strong>in</strong> some PCA races<br />

where <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cars were much faster or<br />

slower, <strong>the</strong> result be<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> I ended up<br />

do<strong>in</strong>g laps where I was rarely rac<strong>in</strong>g any-<br />

one but <strong>the</strong> clock. While this isn’t a spec<br />

series, <strong>the</strong> equaliz<strong>at</strong>ion process makes for<br />

similarly competitive rac<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The Grand Prix of Denver course is a chal-<br />

lenge as it is a “fake” street course laid out<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Pepsi Center park<strong>in</strong>g lot and part of<br />

Auraria Parkway. In most places <strong>the</strong>re<br />

isn’t much room for error, and cars th<strong>at</strong> hit<br />

<strong>the</strong> wall are often out of commission due to<br />

<strong>the</strong> damage. I drove more conserv<strong>at</strong>ively<br />

than some of <strong>the</strong> seasoned pros, who<br />

would use every <strong>in</strong>ch of <strong>the</strong> course and<br />

come amaz<strong>in</strong>gly close to some of <strong>the</strong><br />

walls. An added challenge was <strong>the</strong> lack of<br />

any bank<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> turns, so you had to<br />

slow down fur<strong>the</strong>r than you might expect if<br />

you’re used to th<strong>in</strong>gs like turn 1 <strong>at</strong> Pueblo<br />

or Second Creek.<br />

Perhaps <strong>the</strong> most dram<strong>at</strong>ic difference <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

race itself was <strong>the</strong> “stand<strong>in</strong>g start”, which<br />

is similar to th<strong>at</strong> of F1, but very different<br />

from <strong>the</strong> roll<strong>in</strong>g starts used <strong>in</strong> PCA and<br />

SCCA club rac<strong>in</strong>g. The cars are l<strong>in</strong>ed up<br />

<strong>in</strong> two columns, with a slight stagger<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and a car length or so gap between <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

There is a 5 second warn<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> red<br />

lights come on, and when <strong>the</strong>y go out you<br />

have to take off, mak<strong>in</strong>g sure th<strong>at</strong> you<br />

don’t jump <strong>the</strong> start. As many of you<br />

know, Porsches are not renowned for be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gre<strong>at</strong> <strong>at</strong> burnouts from a standstill, and it<br />

only gets worse with <strong>the</strong> high-strung<br />

clutches <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> racecars. I had a chance to<br />

practice a few times before <strong>the</strong> race, and<br />

managed a decent start, although my reac-<br />

tion time was a bit slow.<br />

I had qualified 22nd out of 24, and <strong>the</strong> 24th<br />

car didn’t make <strong>the</strong> cut, so I was star<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out on <strong>the</strong> back row. Th<strong>at</strong> was okay, as I<br />

didn’t have to worry about be<strong>in</strong>g rammed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> car beh<strong>in</strong>d me if my start was bad.<br />

As I took off, <strong>the</strong> Pontiac GTO <strong>in</strong> 23rd<br />

stayed on <strong>the</strong> right and beh<strong>in</strong>d, while some<br />

Porsches and Corvettes <strong>in</strong> front of me were<br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g around for position. I went to <strong>the</strong><br />

outside, which turned out to be a mistake<br />

as a Corvette cut me off, <strong>the</strong> result be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

th<strong>at</strong> I was <strong>in</strong> dead last on <strong>the</strong> first turns. A<br />

Cadillac CTS-V driven by Max Papis had<br />

broken a driveshaft on <strong>the</strong> start, so I did<br />

pass him as he entered <strong>the</strong> pits, but <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

time it wasn’t clear if it was a serious prob-<br />

lem or not. I got <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> GTO,<br />

and was off on <strong>the</strong> chase to see if I could<br />

improve my position.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first half of <strong>the</strong> race I was <strong>in</strong> a<br />

group <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> back, hav<strong>in</strong>g a blast try<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

get past <strong>the</strong> GTO. He could pull me a bit<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> start of <strong>the</strong> straight, but <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end I<br />

was c<strong>at</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g him and was able to out-<br />

brake and out-corner him. I wasn’t sure<br />

th<strong>at</strong> I could get around him, but I was wait-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g for him to make a mistake. We passed<br />

a few cars th<strong>at</strong> were slower, or which had<br />

some sort of mechanical problems. The<br />

most excit<strong>in</strong>g moment was when <strong>the</strong> GTO<br />

hit a Porsche Turbo, caus<strong>in</strong>g it to sp<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> a<br />

turn. We both went around <strong>the</strong> Turbo, but<br />

<strong>at</strong> one po<strong>in</strong>t I was look<strong>in</strong>g directly <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Turbo driver, and was fortun<strong>at</strong>e to not have<br />

hit him.<br />

I had some more excitement as I entered<br />

turn 1 and realized th<strong>at</strong> my brakes had<br />

faded, almost caus<strong>in</strong>g me to hit <strong>the</strong> GTO.<br />

Th<strong>at</strong> would have probably spun him out,<br />

and I would have gotten past, but th<strong>at</strong>’s not<br />

<strong>the</strong> way th<strong>at</strong> I want to be<strong>at</strong> someone. I got<br />

on <strong>the</strong> radio with Steve Rowe and told him<br />

about <strong>the</strong> brakes, and he rem<strong>in</strong>ded me to<br />

turn on <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er cool<strong>in</strong>g system, which<br />

sprays a mist <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> air ducts. It took a<br />

couple of laps of driv<strong>in</strong>g a bit easier to get<br />

<strong>the</strong> brakes back, but <strong>the</strong>y came back with<br />

<strong>the</strong> legendary strength th<strong>at</strong> we all know<br />

and love <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se cars. I was able to c<strong>at</strong>ch<br />

up to <strong>the</strong> GTO from quite a ways beh<strong>in</strong>d,<br />

so I knew th<strong>at</strong> I had some time on him, if<br />

not <strong>the</strong> ability to get around easily.<br />

At just past <strong>the</strong> halfway po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong>re was an<br />

<strong>in</strong>cident with a Viper <strong>in</strong> a tire wall, and it<br />

was look<strong>in</strong>g likely th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y would br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out <strong>the</strong> caution flags to clear <strong>the</strong> track. At<br />

<strong>the</strong> same time <strong>the</strong> leaders, Wolf Henzler<br />

and Rob<strong>in</strong> Liddel, came up beh<strong>in</strong>d me, so I<br />

let <strong>the</strong>m by to allow <strong>the</strong>m to race. As we<br />

got <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> pace car, I was fifth,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> GTO <strong>in</strong> 2nd and ano<strong>the</strong>r car <strong>in</strong><br />

1st. Theses two cars were sent around to<br />

<strong>the</strong> back, but were still on <strong>the</strong> lead lap,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> race leaders now <strong>in</strong> 1st and 2nd<br />

and me <strong>in</strong> 3rd. If you’ve ever heard of <strong>the</strong><br />

“Lucky Dog” <strong>in</strong> NASCAR, th<strong>at</strong> was wh<strong>at</strong> I<br />

missed out on by hav<strong>in</strong>g let <strong>the</strong> two leaders<br />

by just before <strong>the</strong> caution. Oh well, you<br />

live and learn.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> restart it was four Porsches up<br />

front, and it felt more like a PCA race than<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g else. The two leaders took off<br />

very fast before <strong>the</strong> green, and I was <strong>in</strong> a<br />

bit of a drag race with <strong>the</strong> car beh<strong>in</strong>d me,<br />

driven by a young rookie named Lawson<br />

Aschenbach who was quite impressive. I<br />

moved to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side and lifted a bit to let<br />

him by to chase <strong>the</strong> leaders, yell<strong>in</strong>g “Go<br />

kid, go!” and try<strong>in</strong>g to urge him on. He<br />

didn’t move with quite <strong>the</strong> confidence th<strong>at</strong><br />

a seasoned pro would have, but he did<br />

manage to give <strong>the</strong>m a good chase. Some<br />

will certa<strong>in</strong>ly question why I would let any<br />

driver by dur<strong>in</strong>g a race, but I don’t believe<br />

<strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g “th<strong>at</strong> guy” who ru<strong>in</strong>s someone<br />

else’s race by try<strong>in</strong>g to block an obviously<br />

faster car.<br />

The rest of <strong>the</strong> race was fairly uneventful,<br />

and I ended up <strong>in</strong> 15th overall, hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

made up 7 positions through pass<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

<strong>at</strong>trition. I was quite pleased with <strong>the</strong><br />

results, as my goals had only been to race<br />

well and f<strong>in</strong>ish <strong>the</strong> race without <strong>in</strong>cident.<br />

It was truly an outstand<strong>in</strong>g weekend, and<br />

was by far <strong>the</strong> most excit<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> I’ve<br />

done <strong>in</strong> my rac<strong>in</strong>g career to d<strong>at</strong>e. Will I do<br />

it aga<strong>in</strong>? Oh yes, and I’m head<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Laguna Seca for <strong>the</strong> race <strong>in</strong> October.<br />

Congr<strong>at</strong>ul<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>Skip</strong> on a heady first race!<br />

Good luck <strong>at</strong> Laguna Seca.<br />
