GOVERNING BOARD MEETING
The Governing Board of the Michigan Entomological
Society met on 8 November 1976, at the
East Lansing residence of Louis Wilson, Newsletter
Editor. The meeting, which convened at
7:15 p.m., was attended by the following board
members: Al Bratt, Don Cress (presiding),
Dave Evans, Dick Fleming, Dave Gosling, Bob
Husband, Mo Nielsen and Ron Priest. Items discussed
were:
1. Nielsen gave a brief financial and membership
status report. Dues notices were being
mailed to 407 active (including sustaining)
and 37 student members. Cash on hand
amounted to $6,373.10, with about $340 in
accounts receivable. All bills were paid
at the time of the meeting. New memberships
were increasing at a satisfying rate, although
the number of subscribers was static.
The outlook for the Society still looks
good, despite rising printing and postal
costs. Much of the solvency can be attributed
to the large number of subsidized
papers in the Journal. A brief report was
made regarding a response from IRS concerning
the acceptance of commercial ads in our
publications. Basically, the Society can
obtain advertising funds provided the purposes
of organization does not change as defined
in Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal
Revenue Code.
2. Arrangements for the next Annual Meeting
were discussed. Al Bratt, as President­
Elect, automatically serves as the Program
Chairman. He proposed a meeting place in
the Grand Rapids area, and also possible
collecting areas, which are reported in this

Newsletter. The meeting date was set for 17
June as our first choice; 10 June as a second
choice.
3. Nomination for new officers was discussed;
Dave Gosling, as the immediate Past President,
will serve as Chairman of the Nominating
Committee.
4. Gosling, Journal Editor, gave an editorial
report and indicated that Vol. 9(3) was
ready for mailing, and 9(4) would be printed
in December and mailed before the end of the
year--the first time a full volume of THE
GREAT LAKES ENTOMOLOGIST will be mailed in
one year! Volume 10(1) will be ready on
schedule, but more manuscripts are needed
to complete 10(2) and have it on schedule.
Considerable discussion followed the desirability
of continuing with a separate volume
index. While the index has been averaging
about $300 per issue, it was decided to
continue since George Heaton and Marcia
Holmes will assist in its compilation (see
comments in Newsletter, Vol. 21(1), p. 3).
5. Wilson reported on the need for more material
to be used in the Newsletter. Also, he
urged more input from members for the Entomology
Notes series which now number nine.
Future issues of the Newsletter will have
more photographs.
6. Nielsen expressed that his mounting work
load as Executive Secretary has created some
problems during the past year, and hoped
that more of the 'legwork' might be done by
others, especially since his home M.E.S.
'office' is 7 miles from the Society's MSU
mailbox and other facilities. Cress will
investigate using student help to aid in
getting mailing envelopes and other materials
ready for distribution.
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
HARBORING A CATERPILLAR A CRIME
SEATTLE (AP) - Harboring a caterpillar can
get you six months in jail and a $300 fine here,
but violators needn't worry about the law
creeping up on them.
Robert Barr, director of neighborhood service
centers, says that because of the stiff
penalties, the city issues no citations under
the 1912 law, which makes it a misdemeanor to
have a caterpillar in your backyard.
THE CITY council may repeal the statute altogether.
Some city officials contend that caterpillars
actually do little harm to trees or plants
and are less destructive than insecticides used
to kill them.
Councilwoman Jeanette Williams favors keeping
tbe law but lessening the penalty to a fine
similar to that for a parking ticket.

ENTOMOLOGISTS' POSITIONS
Three positions open for research entomologists
to work in Mali, Africa to conduct fulltime
research on the biology, ecology, and control
of the tsetse fly. The first position is
for a senior entomologist (in charge) to serve
as team leader and project administrator, Ph.D.
in entomology requied with evidence of administrative
ability. Postdoctoral experience preferred.
Person selected must have strong background
in medical entomology, parasitology,
taxonomy, statistics, population dynamics, and
field experience. The second position is for
a field entomologist to determine species composition
and popUlation dynamics and to develop
the best control procedures for Mali conditions.
Ph.D. in entomology preferred but will consider
M.S. plus experience. The third position is
for an entomologist to develop procedures for
mass-rearing tsetse. Ph.D. in entomology preferred
but M.S. with adequate training and
experience will .be considered. Individuals
selected will be employees of the Texas A & M
University System. Salary is open depending on
training and qualifications with allowances for
housing and living expenses. Initial appointment
will be for 1 year with options for renewal
to 3 years. Closing date is 1 November 1977 or

TEEN INTERNATIONAL ENTOMOLOGY GROUP
The Teen International Entomology Group
(TIEG) is now based at Michigan State University,
under the auspices of the Entomology
Department. It is basically an organization
set up for amateur entomologists, especially
teenagers who are just begining to develop an
interest in the field. The group was begun
eleven years ago by several teens in New York
and was under the sponsorship of Cornell Univer
-sity until recently when budget cuts forced
the program to be dropped--and MSU picked it
up. Membership presently numbers approximately
1,500 worldwide. The basic project of TIEG is
publication of a periodic newsletter and the
TIEG magazine.
Many of the people motivated to join initially
are insect collectors interested in
corresponding and exhanging specimens. TIEG
attempts to accomodate them by being partly a
"writing and trading clu):>", but goes beyond that
in educating amateurs on how to make their collections
most useful (the value of field notes,
proper collection maintenance, etc.); it also
tries to show members what other avenues of insect
study might be worth pursuing, such as
behavior, pest control, conservation and photography.
Articles in the magazine cover a wide
range of entomological topics and are generally

written on a level that will appeal to a high
school student with a mild background in insects.

INSECTS AND THE LIFE OF MAN
This book, by Sir Vincent Wigglesworth, comprises
a series of essays and lectures, all of
which were intended for a general and not a
specialized audience. The articles have been
reproduced largely unaltered except to update
certain material.
During his distinguished career, the author
has studied his subject from three viewpoints:
as a 'pure' research biologist, as a medical
entomologist and as an agricultural entomologist.
Some chapters review the development in
insect physiology during the past fifty years
and illustrate the importance of insects as a
medium for studying the life sciences. Other
chapters pinpoint development in agricultural
entomology on the farm or in the orchard, and
others cover aspects of medical entomology,
particularly malaria.
