Community Committee for International
Students (CCIS)
CCIS had a very successful 2002-03 year. The highlight of
the year was celebrating our 50th Anniversary in May
with two separate events.
• The first event was the 50/40 Reception, a
combined event celebrating CCIS’ 50th
Anniversary and the I-Center’s 40th Anniversary.
I-Center Director John Pearson began with
welcoming everyone, then CCIS President,
Charlene Ward, talked about volunteering. She
introduced past Stanford President Dr. Richard
Lyman who spoke, and then Dr. Isha Ray spoke
about her involvement with CCIS and the I-
Center as an International student.
• The second event was CCIS’ Annual Meeting
with Stanford President John Hennessey
providing opening remarks, followed by an I-
Center Director and CCIS President representing
the five past decades. For these celebrations, we
were delighted to have CCIS’ first three
President’s in attendance (Joan Lane, Sheila
Spaeth, and Pat Chadwick), along with Stanford’s
four I-Center Directors (Werner Warmbrunn
(CCIS’ founder), Ken Cooper, Lee Zeigler, and
current Director John Pearson).
We had much to celebrate during this year. CCIS began
the year with 19 enthusiastic Board members and a
membership drive that exceeded our expectations. Our
programs did equally well:
• Community Advisors welcomed 423 new
International graduate students and 57 new
scholars/researchers in the10 days before school
began.
• English-in-Action matched close to 300
graduate students, scholars, and spouses with
community volunteers. The partners meet for
one hour, once a week for general conversation.
• English Classes had 12 varied classes per quarter
and a consistently higher enrollment than
before.
• Homestay found community homes, for a 3-5
day stay before the beginning of the school
year, for all applicants (about 50).
• Loan Closet provided small household items to
about 125 students/scholars for their
apartments.
• Spouse Education Fund gave grants to 24
spouses, their highest number to date.
• Communiqué, our newsletter, was increased to
five issues this year, beginning with a one-page
edition in September. The November issue was
eight pages in length, January/February, March/
April, and May/June were six pages. Each issue
was filled with useful information for our CCIS
membership.
• Our other programs were also very successful,
the Potluck/Music Nights attracted many new
students and community members, the Cooking
Classes were always full, and about 75 people
enjoyed the Holiday Open House.
In summary CCIS had a very productive and fun year. We
ended the year with more volunteers than at the
beginning and a positive cash flow.
