objective is to promote and represent the <strong>in</strong>terests of young liberals as well as the<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest of the <strong>Africa</strong>n young people <strong>in</strong> general. It holds an observer status <strong>in</strong> Liberal<br />
International (see Table 4.6 <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Africa</strong>n political party members; some are<br />
members of several party <strong>in</strong>ternationals of like-m<strong>in</strong>ded ideological orientations).<br />
4.7.3 The <strong>Africa</strong>n members of Socialist International<br />
Socialist International is a worldwide organization of social democratic, socialist and<br />
labour parties. Currently, it br<strong>in</strong>gs together 162 political parties and organizations<br />
from all cont<strong>in</strong>ents. Table 4.7 shows that 30 <strong>Africa</strong>n political parties are Socialist<br />
International members (19 full members, seven consultative and four with observer<br />
status).<br />
Apparently, the association of Socialist International with the socialist political<br />
parties of the cold war era still haunts many socialist-oriented <strong>Africa</strong>ns who are still<br />
fearful of be<strong>in</strong>g associated with military socialism.<br />
