About the Authors<br />
Per Nordlund is as a Senior Programme Officer at International IDEA, work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with IDEA’s Programme on Research and Dialogue with <strong>Political</strong> <strong>Parties</strong>. Prior to<br />
jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g IDEA <strong>in</strong> 2004, he was a Senior Democracy and Human Rights Advisor<br />
at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and was<br />
stationed <strong>in</strong> Zimbabwe <strong>in</strong> 2000-2004 as Sida’s Regional Advisor <strong>for</strong> Democratic<br />
Governance <strong>in</strong> Southern <strong>Africa</strong>. Per Nordlund has worked and carried out research<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce 1990, and he holds a PhD from the Department of Government at<br />
Uppsala University, Sweden: his thesis is published as Organis<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Political</strong> Agora:<br />
Dom<strong>in</strong>ation and Democratisation <strong>in</strong> Zambia and Zimbabwe (Uppsala University:<br />
1996). He has also been a research associate of the University of Zimbabwe, the<br />
University of Zambia and the University of the Witwatersrand, South <strong>Africa</strong>.<br />
Mohamed Salih is Professor of Politics of Development at both the Institute of Social<br />
Studies (ISS), The Hague, and the Department of <strong>Political</strong> Science, University of<br />
Leiden, the Netherlands. His latest publications <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>Africa</strong>n Parliaments between<br />
Government and Governance (New York: Palgrave Macmillan 2005) and <strong>Africa</strong>n<br />
<strong>Political</strong> <strong>Parties</strong>: Evolution, Institutionalization and Governance (London: Pluto Press,<br />
