CHAPTER 10
CENTURY FARMS

CENTURY FARMS
The Town of Belmont has the distinction of having six century farms, which
means that all six had a forty, or a part thereof, in which the dwellings are
located and have been owned by the same family continuously for a period of one
hundred years or over. It being passed down in a direct line from one generation
to the next.
In most cases it was passed from father to son. However, it could be father
to daughter, or in the case of the death of the husband, the property went to his
widow and she in turn passed it on to a son or a daughter as the case may have been.
There are several ways in which these parcels of land passed from one to another.
It may have been through a will, Warranty Deed, Quit Claim Deed or even by a
Land Contract.
I have by no means attempted to show all of the transactions that have taken
place from the first ancestor to their present day owners, but show only the
general trend that shows the various land acquisitions down through the years. The
Warranty Deed may show the purchase of several tracts of land on the same deed,
but I have chosen to show only the quarter section, or part thereof, on which the
dwellings are located.
