this simple arrangement. Here phase-space refers to the product <strong>of</strong> the widths<br />

A compression in phase-space can be used to reduce the temperature<br />

<strong>of</strong> a sample through adiabatic expansion. In this case one can imagine adia-<br />

batically moving the one-way-wall to the left in Fig. 1.4 to achieve this. If we<br />
