May 2010
from the president Rex Heck, President
Things are getting
busy—we have
already had one DE;
there is an autocross
this weekend (see
page 6), and then a
one-day rally in June
(page 15). Hopefully by now our
Porsches are out of mothballs and back
on the road or track. And if all of these
events aren’t enough, we have had
some exciting socials. The April social
at Prestige Imports was one of the
best-attended ever! We learned some
of the things that Porsche will be introducing
in the future. The success of
this event is going to be a tough act to
follow; fortunately, Eric Behrendsen
and Roger Buswell have volunteered to
try. They have some exciting socials
planned for this summer and fall. Stay
tuned to the newsletter, Web site and
e-mail blasts. By the way, don’t miss
the May social at the Shelby American
Collection in Boulder. Greg and Wendy
Volan have an exciting evening
planned for us. See the details on page
14.
With a dynamic and constantly
changing calendar, check the Web
page often and watch for e-mails. We
try to get everything in the newsletter,
but sometimes things happen too fast.
As of April 10, we have 2,001 primary
and affiliate members. Of those, 838 of
you do not have an e-mail address
listed with PCA. The only way to get
the RMR and PCA e-mails is to have
your e-mail address listed. So, go to
www.pca.org and check your e-mail
address. It will only be used for official
mailings; it will not be sold or given to
anyone. And if you decide that you do
not want to get the e-mails, there is an
opt-out option.
We got some good news from
National: The Rocky Mountain Region
won the Actual Growth Membership
Contest for 2009! RMR had the largest
net increase of all the regions in PCA.
We will receive a trophy and a $500
award at the St. Charles Porsche
Parade. I have asked John Mackin, the
2009 Membership Chair, to accept the
trophy on our behalf.
Congratulations to John for doing a
great job!
We have lots of new members, as
you can see from the previous
paragraph. I am sure there are a lot of
you that I haven’t met. I would like to
meet each one of you and personally
welcome you to the club. We welcome
new members at all of our events. For
that to happen, you will have to come
to an event and try us out. We try to
offer something for everyone: There
are the monthly socials held in different
parts of the metro area. At the
charity Concours in June, you can show
off your pride and joy. It is a great
excuse to really clean up your car—or
stop by and look at what others have
done to their cars. We also have tours
and rallies that range from a few hours
to a few days. Autocrosses give you an
opportunity to learn how your car handles
in a slow-speed, safe
environment. We have driver education
events at High Plains Raceway;
there is a combination of classroom
instruction and on-track training. Each
new driver is assigned a personal
instructor to get them off to a safe
start. There is even a DE in July just for
the ladies. Tell your SO that you are
taking the Porsche for a Saturday drive
and come out to the track! Or bring
your own daily driver. Check out the
article for Ladies’ Day on page 13. For
a greater adrenaline rush for experienced
drivers, once a year there is the
RMR Club Race, also at High Plains
Raceway.
So there are no excuses for not coming
out at least once. Stop by and
introduce yourself. At the track I have
the blue #96 Porsche. At other events,
ask around; someone will know where I
am. I am never too busy to meet new
members.
unoff area Jeremy Rosenberger, Editor
Welcome to the
final issue of RMR
Porsche News.
Yes, that’s right—
this is the last issue
of the newsletter
that will bear that
name. After just over 28 years and
some 300 issues (I’m not sure exactly
how many, as we have not always published
monthly), the RMR Porsche
News name (along with its progenitor,
RMR/Porsche) is being retired.
The first newsletter to bear the
RMR/Porsche name appeared in 1982,
with the January/February issue (see
opposite page). Under editor Joe Holbert’s
direction, RMR/Porsche went on
to win PCA’s Paul R. Heinmiller Award
the next year, deeming it the “best
overall newsletter in the PCA” for 1983.
Congratulations, Joe, wherever you
are.
Your newsletter’s new name, to be
revealed next month, will have been
furnished by you, our readers. In case
you’ve been hiding out under a rock
for the past month, in the April issue I
launched a contest to decide a new
name for the newsletter. (See last
month’s “Runoff Area” for details.) If
we’re still in the month of April by the
time you read this, be sure to submit
your suggestion(s) by the April 30
deadline!
Some less-visible, but no less important,
changes are going on as well.
Advertising Coordinator. I’ve already
been putting Roger to work, and I
wanted to express my appreciation for
his enthusiasm, professionalism and,
not least of all, willingness to volunteer
in the first place. Roger’s efforts will
ultimately allow us to expand our content
to offer some new features that I
hope you’ll find worth reading. In the
meantime, if you’d like to show off
your products or services to some
taking on this monumental task!
Speaking of new features, you may
have noticed more reader-submitted
articles in recent issues. Last month,
Rodger Stewart recalled for us the
events leading up to his “fall from
grace” with the purchase of a 1957
Porsche Speedster replica. This month,
Kevin Gosselin treats us to a minireview
of a fresh-off-the-press
Porsche-related novel, Closing Speed
by Ted West (page 16). Kevin is himself
no stranger to Porsche-related novels,
being the author of perhaps the first
and only other such novel, Hunt for
901 (Demontreville Press, 2008).
I’m quite impressed with the quality
of the submissions that I’ve been
receiving—it’s clear to me that there’s
a lot of talent and creativity among our
membership. Please keep the submissions
coming!
membership musings Nancy Warren, Membership Chair
Ahh, springtime in
the Rockies...
We had another
great turnout at the
April membership
social. It was great to
see many new members
again. Guest speaker Paul Gagliardi
was very interesting and informative. It
was an excellent talk with lots of
insights to the “Porsche Way.” We didn’t
learn any Porsche secrets, though.
Wow, our region continues to grow in
membership! This month we had
twenty-seven new members and five
transfer members. We are still one of
the fastest growing regions in PCA. The
Rocky Mountain Region encompasses
eight counties in western Nebraska,
eight counties in southern Wyoming and
twenty-two counties in Colorado. We
share Colorado—from Castle Rock
south—with our sister region, Alpine
Mountain Region.
Congratulations to Rocky Mountain
Region for winning the Actual Growth
Membership Contest for 2009! John
Mackin, 2009 Membership Chair, will
accept the trophy and monetary award
at the 2010 St. Charles Porsche Parade
held in July.
Spring has sprung and the calendar is
full with Porsche Club events. May 1st
and 2nd are RMR’s autocross school and
autocross at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park
in Commerce City (see page 6). Thursday,
May 6th is the monthly
membership social, which will be held at
the Shelby American Collection Museum
in Boulder (page 14). You don’t want to
miss this one—it is a great museum!
They may not be Porsches, but they are
really cool cars!
Alpine Mountain Region, our neighbor
club to the south, is having a DE at La
Junta on May 14th through the 16th.
Why not join them? It gives you more
track time! (See page 6.)
Way southwest in Albuquerque, NM,
the Roadrunner Region’s Fiesta del
Porsche is back! The dates are Memorial
Day Weekend, May 27th through May
30th (see page 8). This is always a fun
event.
Autocross is not only a “performance driving
car at its limit. You not only learn how to handle
your car at speeds that you drive daily, but you
also:
• gain confidence in your driving ability;
• learn the limits of your car’s brakes;
• learn correct seating, hand, and foot positions;
• learn the limits of your tires’ adhesion.
Autocross School will teach you basic driving skills
that you will use in your everyday driving, and it
is a whole lot of fun! At the Saturday, May 1st
Enthusiast Series to
Replace Challenge Series
in 2010
The Challenge Series was started in
1977 and has served both the Rocky
Mountain and Alpine Mountain Regions
of Porsche Club of America quite well for
over 30 years. However, in 2009 the
Challenge Series had only nine people
qualify for awards. This was out of over
two thousand members in both clubs
combined.
For 2010, the boards of both clubs
have decided to try something different:
the Enthusiast Series, a series based
solely on participation in the driving
events of both clubs. The rules for the
Enthusiast Series are now posted at the
RMR Web site, www.rmrporcheclub.com.
Also new for this year, the rules for running
and participating in events (the
been separated
from the Challenge
Series Rules and
are also on the
Web site. Very little
has been changed
in the Event Rules
for this first year
without the Challenge
Series.
However, if you
trailer your race
or trackdedicated
car to
the track, you will now have to have
it inspected annually and turn in a
copy of that annual inspection at onsite
event registration.
So what’s new about the Enthusiast
Series?
1. It’s strictly participation-based: A
day of participation at a Driver Education,
Autocross, Rally, Tour or Concurs
gives the participant one point.
2. Classes are reduced to four: AMR
and RMR, men and women; you are
competing against men or women within
your particular club. There are no longer
required classes for cars.
3. If you work at an event, the event
chair can assign points to you for working—one
day worked is one point.
4. In order to be eligible for end-ofyear
awards, you must be a member of
AMR or RMR, and complete at least
three events in each club: (a) a DE, (b)
an autocross, and (c) a rally or tour—a
total of six events.
5. Best of all, the five male and five
female winners in each club get a
trophy and dollar credits towards
events in the 2011 season; that’s
basically money in the bank!
OK Fergie, if this looks sufficiently new
and different, go to www.
Enthusiast Series—especially the eligible
events in both clubs—and check it out!
Rock & Roll Is Here To Stay
This is one of only two timed RMR DEs
this year. This is a great chance to
benchmark your car and your driving
ability!
The summertime was when arena concerts
were the place to be. We were in
college or still too young to know better.
Now many of us are old farts, and we
should know better—but we don’t, so we
still love our Rock & Roll and getting out
in the summer sun. And we love our fast
cars!
June 19th and 20th is when we get a
chance to Roll our fast cars legally to
really high speeds, all with as much
tutoring, camaraderie and refreshment
as we can stand. We’ll also get to Rock
to our favorite bands (recordings, of
course, since many of those guys are
dead) while relaxing under the big top.
RMR-PCA Driver Education events are
world famous (I made that up) and we
have the new track to prove it. So
start saving your nickels and
dimes, refrain from buying any
new 45’s, and mark your
calendars so you can be
there or be square. Here
are the initial details:
Who: Anyone, age 18
or older, who has a
sports car they want to
track. There will be a
sign-up period reserved
for RMR and AMR members
to register their Porsches first.
Should we not get a full roster by
the deadline of a week before the
registration closing, reservations will be
opened to other makes and CAMA car
clubs. Sorry, no motorcycles. Registration
closes on June 12th or with 120 paid
drivers, whichever comes first. The April
DE sold out early, so please don’t hesitate!
There will be a waiting list if you
don’t jump on it in time.
Club spectators and their guests are
welcome with some common-sense paddock
rules and a signed waiver. Not
open to the general public. Spectators
can sign up for a ride with an instructor
for $20. We call it a “Taste of the Track”
and there are only a limited number of
slots available. Get to the track early
and sign up at the registration table.
What: World famous RMR-PCA sponsored
Driver’s Education (DE) event. All
cars must pass tech inspection, a
waiver must be signed, and noggin
buckets are mandatory.
When: June 19th and 20th, 2010.
Gates open at 6 AM, first-time drivers’
meeting (including first time to HPR) at
7:15 AM, mandatory all drivers’ meeting
at 8 AM, Beer:30 at 4:30 PM. Beer:30
will be hosted by the Porsche Breakfast
Club. Please, no weed without a doctor’s
prescription (JUST KIDDING!). Promptness
is a virtue; being early is even
better.
Where: High Plains Raceway is about
an hour from downtown Denver (east on
Interstate 70, Exit 316 [Byers], then
head east on US Highway 36 for 17
miles... you can’t miss it). Beware of
bears in the air and on the side of the
road!
rmrporschenews May 2010
Why: Learn by doing. Find out how to
drive your car quickly and safely. Get incar
and de-briefing instruction from a
crack instructor. Get your track times
and shoot for going faster. Bragging
rights! Decide if you want to go into racing
as a hobby or sharpen your already
prodigious track skills. Enthusiast Series
points will be awarded.
How: We will have the usual special
registration link through our Web site,
www.rmrporscheclub.com, starting May
8th. Should you be a computer illiterate,
you can call the registrar to help walk
you through the process. The registrars
plan to offer walk-up registration only if
the event doesn’t sell out, but it will
include an additional fee. We also plan
to have a couple easy questions about
your familiarity with DE events and High
Plains Raceway to help ensure a fun,
safe time for you.
How much: Fees are as follows:
• Either day: Driver: $175, Co-driver add
$150 (one car)
• Both days: Driver $250, Co-driver add
$225 (one car)
Suggestions: Please e-mail or call
with any suggestions or ideas you’d like
to see for this fun weekend in the Colorado
sun. If you would like to be a
sponsor of the event, let me know as
well. My e-mail address is roger@rogerbuswell.com
Formula 1 pilot Hülkenberg
makes Nordschleife debut
Stuttgart. The Porsche 911 GT3 R
Hybrid passed its test leading up the
Nürburgring 24 hour race on 15 and 16
May with flying colors. At round two of
the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship,
the racer from Weissach, decked
out in white and orange, crossed the finish
line third in the overall classification.
On 23 April, several weeks prior to the
long distance classic in the Eifel, AT&T
Williams Formula 1 pilot Nico
Hülkenberg will test the hybrid-911 on
the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Testing for the third round of the Nürburgring
Long Distance Championship,
Hülkenberg will make his debut on the
Nordschleife in a race car. Hülkenberg is
no stranger to the flywheel generator
that stores energy from the Porschedeveloped
hybrid system. Following
Porsche’s specifications, the generator
was designed and manufactured by
Williams Hybrid Power.
“This test drive will certainly be a
completely new experience for me,”
says Hülkenberg. “In my career to date,
Instead of the batteries
used in
hybrid road cars, an electrical flywheel
electric motors. Compared to a battery,
the flywheel generator has the advantage
of storing a high amount of energy
considerably more quickly and then
releasing it.
Thanks to its sophisticated electronic
Come to Our Party,
Our Tupperware Party!
LADIES DAY 2010
Saturday, July 17
at High Plains
Event Chairs:
Susan Bucknam portia@ipa.net • Martha Vail marthavail@gmail.com
It’s A Tupperware Party! (really, it is)
According to the Tupperware Web site, this is “THE DECADE OF THE PARTY”!
A Tupperware Party is “a celebration of the friendships made and the fun had.”
So is Ladies’ Day! Tupperware Brands is a leader in driving positive change in
women’s lives. RMR Ladies’ Day leads women to a positive driving experience
and, perhaps, a change in the way women view their cars. So...
Mark your calendars now for RMR’s Ladies’ Day Drivers Ed Event, Saturday,
July 17th at High Plains Raceway.
This is LADIES’ DAY... that means there will be no men driving in your run
sessions... not a whiff of testosterone, unless it’s in the pits, where the guys
will help with any car-related tasks. It means there will be moms, daughters,
aunts, sisters, friends, co-workers, and even grandmothers driving.
You don’t need experience driving on the track, and you don’t need to be
hesitant because there are people out there going way too fast. You just need
to be ready to have fun and learn some new skills. You need not be a member
of the Porsche Club to drive in this event—you just need to be a girl (although
I’m sure “Stephanie,” “Roberta,” or “Georgia” may show up and try to get in
on the fun).
You don’t even have to drive a Porsche—bring the car that you are comfortable
driving. We will have driving instructors for those who are new to the
track. I’ve been told that this is the Instructor Corps’ favorite event, because
the students are so attentive and take direction well. This is a low-key event,
so bring a friend, a mom, a daughter, an aunt, a niece, or grandma!
membership social Thursday, May 6
Greg and Wendy Volan will host the monthly social on Thursday, May 6th at the Shelby American
Collection museum in Boulder from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM. Refreshments will be
available and, for those interested, there will be guided tours of the museum describing
its many exhibits, ranging from the cars to its extensive collection of memorabilia and
original artwork.
Founded in 1996, The Shelby American Collection is dedicated to the preservation of
Shelby automobiles and the history of the legendary 1960’s Shelby American racing
team. Located in Boulder, the museum houses one of the world’s most extensive and
significant collections of Shelby American race cars, and is considered by many to be
the premier collection in the world.
Many of the original team cars that were instrumental in establishing the success of the
Shelby American racing team and the legendary performance of the Cobra race cars are on
exhibit, including the World Championship F.I.A. Cobra roadster and the Le Mans GT-winning
Daytona Coupe. Competition cars driven by racing greats Ken Miles, Dan Gurney, Bob Bondurant,
Phil Hill, Jack Sears, Dave MacDonald and others are also on permanent display at the museum. A number of the Collection’s
automobiles are still actively raced in vintage racing events in the U.S. and Europe.
Carroll Shelby is arguably one of the most influential
figures in American auto manufacturing
history. In addition to his fame as a race driver, he
is the developer of the iconic Cobra, Mustang and
GT-40 sports cars. Under Carroll’s leadership,
beginning in 1962, the Shelby American Team
achieved rapid success with Cobras, the Shelby
Mustangs and later the GT40’s. In 1965, Shelby
American won the F.I.A. World Manufacturers GT
Championship, the only U.S. car company to do so.
Carroll has been a long-term friend, supporter and
advisor of the museum and regularly attends the
museum’s events that bring together many of the
drivers, mechanics and staff who made Shelby
American a World Champion.
Greg and Wendy are longtime active PCA/RMR
members since 1973. Both Greg and Wendy
have been involved with the museum since its
founding in 1996. Greg is a Director of the
spring rally Saturday, June 12
Spring is already well underway, which
means your Porsche should already be
out of hibernation and ready for some
rally competition! Be sure also to brush
up on your navigation skills, because
this spring’s TSD rally is just around the
corner. And since this year’s rally is later
in the season than last year’s, we just
might avoid the snow this year!
Along with various prizes, this TSD
(Time-Speed-Distance) rally offers the
opportunity to score a rally/tour point in
the Enthusiast Series. Don’t miss your
chance to get a leg up on the competition!
Not familiar with the TSD rally? Not to
worry. A TSD rally is not a race; rather,
the challenge lies in attempting to navigate
a course of public roads in an exact
amount of time—no more, no less. The
course, and thus the “ideal” time, are
not known to the participants in
Jeremy Rosenberger
advance; the fun is
in trying to stay on
course (and on
time) while following
the instructions
provided just
before the start.
But that’s not all—
the instructions
may be written in
such a way as to
keep drivers and
navigators on their
toes. (But we
promise not to get
you lost—not
intentionally, anyway.) Everything you
need to know is on the RMR Web site at
www.rmrporscheclub.com (pick “Info” in
the menu and look for the Rally Instructions
and Rally General Rules). Make
sure to review these rules before the
rally!
If you’re not
inclined to participate
in the
competition, you
can still join in
the fun by volunteering
to work
at a checkpoint
or at registration.
Not only is one’s
karma cleansed
by volunteering,
but an Enthusiast
Series point is
earned as well.
Details are still
being finalized,
but the rally will
rmrporschenews May 2010
take place on Saturday, June 12. Breakfast
and registration will likely open at
8:00 AM, with a drivers’ meeting at 8:30
and the first car out at 9:01. Although
the final destination is a secret, we’ll be
there in time for a late lunch. Both the
start and finish will be in the Denver
area, so you can be home in plenty of
time to finish detailing your car for the
concours on the following day.
Registration in advance will be $30
per car (keep in mind that each car will
need a driver and a navigator). While
you may enter any kind of car in the
rally, Porsches are definitely
encouraged!
Look for complete details in the June
issue of the newsletter, or watch for an
e-mail blast with the pertinent information.
Or contact one of the event chairs
for more information (or to volunteer!):
ook review: closing speed Kevin Gosselin
Nick, the narrator of Closing Speed by
Ted West, is a young American (outsider)
thrust into a world that he doesn’t fully
understand (European racing), and his
experiences in this world—with plenty of
unwritten rules—causes him to question
(character growth) his original fascination
with the sport he once unblinkingly
loved.
In this regard, West’s Nick brings to
mind The Great Gatsby’s narrator, also
named Nick. West Egg (the Gatsby analogy
is too easy), it seems, is not that
different from a pit at the highest level
of European racing. There are shady,
wealthy characters, myriad affairs and
questionable motivations pushing the
action forward in both novels.
Nick—Ted West’s Nick—finds himself
fresh out of college and plucked from
among all the aspirants to cover the
1970 European race calendar to bring
back an unbiased view of the battles
between Porsche’s 917 and Ferrari’s
512. Nick’s beat is all of Europe; his
transport, a new Jaguar XKE, on loan
from the headquarters.
And it is in the descriptions of the offthe-track
action that West shines. And it
should, as this story is a fictionalized
account of an assignment West actually
carried out for Road & Track. Lucky Ted!
But, back to the novel. We, European
racing fans, have all seen the mighty
917 on track. Watched the grainy film of
it dicing with the Ferraris. We have seen
the glossy coffee table books celebrating
each as automotive porn, shot under
flattering lights. But what we have not
had access to is the stage that this automotive
battle raged on. And West brings
us this sprawling stage in jealousyinducing
detail.
From the first few pages, I challenge
any reader to not want to be in Nick’s
(West’s) shoes as he parades up and
down the pits. Chats with the drivers.
Becomes a confidant of the drivers’
wives. Becomes their friend. Makes the
transition from outsider, and to all
appearances, into one of them. He
becomes to the insiders—the racers—an
insider as well. “You are one of us,” says
one of the drivers. But Nick himself
knows he is never one of them. And it is
this self-realization that is an echo of
Fitzgerald’s Nick. This ability to know
when one has spent time with people
16
May 2010
who live a life that is so focused on
something destructive that the only
sane course of action is to watch, record
and report.
For the race enthusiast, the details of
accidents, passes, track conditions,
track locations and tuning is mouthwatering
and achingly accurate.
Remember, West was there. We are carried
along as Porsche pushes relentless
innovation to conquer the Ferraris. We
understand the fleeting celebrity of the
drivers—who are the tools of the companies—competing
at this high, dangerous
level, because, as one character notes,
“there are no wars” to challenge young
men.
I am not a professional book reviewer,
but when a novel comes out that treads
in my wheelhouse of passions and pasti,
I wanted to give it a shot. So, I do not
think the above is a typical review, by
any means, but it should give a pastiche
of what Closing Speed is all about. It is a
great, fast-paced book, perfect for eking
out a bit more automotive enjoyment
this summer. Seriously, automotive nonfiction
is great and informative, but only
fiction can quicken the pulse as effectively
as actually driving a car.
Kevin Gosselin is a 9-year RMR member and
the author of the first, but no longer only,
novel about Porsches.
Official Press Release
It was the fastest, most competitive
European endurance-racing season
ever—Ferrari, Porsche, Alfa Romeo,
Matra—all battling wheel to wheel for
the 1970 World Manufacturer’s Championship,
and young American journalist
Nick Thorne was there to cover it...
But when one spring afternoon he
sprinted across a rain-slick German test
track to rescue the World Champion
from a fiery wreck, he was thrust into
racing’s red-hot center. Suddenly on intimate
terms with the drivers, their wives
and lovers, the secrets he came upon
were vastly more than he bargained for,
as race by race the championship rose
to its desperate climax.
From England’s rain-drenched Brands
Hatch to sunny Monza in Italy, Sicily’s
gritty Targa Florio to glamorous Monaco
and the horrifying speeds of Belgium’s
Spa-Francorchamps, Nick learned to
trust only one truth—in the violence of
all-out competition, there are no innocent
bystanders.
About the author
Ted West wrote his first racing story—a
duel in the rain between a D Jaguar and
a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR—in seventh
grade. He got an A. Road & Track published
his first two professional stories
before he graduated from college. In
1970, Road & Track sent him to Europe
for three months to cover the World
Manufacturer’s Championship wars
between the immortal Ferrari 512 and
Porsche 917. Traveling from England to
Italy, Sicily, Belgium, Germany and
France, he made personal friends of the
drivers and team personnel. Closing
Speed is West’s first novel and is a fictionalized
account of that historic
championship. Ted West lives in Westchester
County, New York.
in the zone Sean Cridland, PCA Zone 9 Representative
I’m into my favorite
part of the year now,
the part where I come
out and visit the
Regions of Zone 9.
Towards the end of
March I made the trip
from New Mexico up to Colorado Springs
for the Alpine Mountain Region’s 35th
Anniversary brunch. On hand were over
80 members and 11 presidents, going
all the way back to the first and founding
member: Fred Veitch. Although I’ve
previously met many of the members of
AMR at Fiesta del Porsche and/or Parade,
this time I got to see them more in their
element, and I really enjoyed listening to
their many stories of past “legendary”
trips and track days. I’ve always been
impressed with how cohesive a group
the AMR people are and also with their
accomplishments relative to their size. It
was a great morning, and I really feel as
if I came away knowing much more
about them and their place in the history
of Zone 9.
The very next Saturday I was over in
Amarillo, Texas for the Llano Estacado
Region’s monthly breakfast meeting. For
those of you know don’t know, Llano
Estacado is the smallest PCA Region in
the country and inhabits a part of the
world where the pick-up truck and American
muscle-cars are more at home. But
that hasn’t dampened their spirit. In
fact, it may be just the opposite. Several
Robert Bills/Ted Bills
of their members have been to doubledigit
figures of Parade participation and
have made the trip to Germany to visit
the Porsche factory. They are a tight-knit
group who show their enthusiasm with
great pride. This was my second visit to
see them and, being that they’re not too
far away, I hope to continue visiting
Amarillo regularly. (Not to mention that
the hotel where I stay has a fantastic
rib-joint right out the front door.)
That takes care of my early spring visitations
till I head down to the West Texas
Region for one of their drive-outs. Last
year I visited them in Lubbock for their
bi-annual RUF event, which was a great
time. This year we’re going for a driveout
into the Davis Mountains. I’ve heard
it’s beautiful, and I’ve never been to the
mountainous regions of Texas, so I’ll be
covering new territory. Plus, I’m looking
forward to seeing another aspect of
their club and getting to see old friends
and meet some more new ones too.
Then it’ll be time for the Roadrunner
Region’s Fiesta del Porsche on Memorial
Day weekend. This year is a big comeback
year for Fiesta, since in 2008 and
2009 the Roadrunners gave it a sabbatical
in favor of their own hosting of PCA
Escape and the RMR/AMR hosting of
Parade, respectively. Chairs Dennis and
Joan Ledbetter have a great variety of
competitive and recreational events
planned, and the weekend will be
topped off with a talk by PCA Past President
Prescott
Kelly. There
will be driveouts,
an
autocross, a
show-andshine
concours, and
even a DE.
Lastly, Zone
9 is starting
what I hope
will be a new
tradition in an
effort to get
more people
to travel
around the
Zone to their
sister
Regions.
Sean Cridland and Fred Veitch pose with the inaugural Zone 9 Cup.
Starting this year, the Zone 9 Challenge
Cup will be awarded to the individual or
couple who have travelled to the most
events in a variety of Regions around
the Zone. The Zone 9 Challenge Cup will
be a perpetual trophy that will be held
by the winner of the previous year for a
year, when the new winner(s) will take
possession. All winners will have their
name added to the trophy. I have
enlisted an esteemed panel of judges
made up of former Zone 9 Reps Dale
Thero, Kathy Fricke, and Frank Barrett to
look over entries for the Cup. There is no
restriction as to what kind of events are
necessary to attend, only that members
visit a variety of the Regions in Zone 9.
The Challenge is designed to encourage
travel throughout Zone 9 to the various
regions, rather than to promote any particular
type of event. We’re hoping to
see lots of Porsches traveling around in
Zone 9, meeting and making new
friends. I can’t wait to present this cup
to the first winners in December!
I look forward to seeing you at an
event soon!
driver’s ed. education John Hajny, Chief Instructor, Central NY Region
“Driver’s Ed. Education: A Series of
Specifics for Success” is an ordered
series of articles prepared for the Redline
Report (Central NY Region
newsletter) by John Hajny. The series is
reprinted here with permission.
Article 8:
Throttle Balance II
The Soft Shoe Shuffle... on Egg Shells!
Your instructors have likely always
harped on the need for smooth, welltimed
inputs to the car. As I’ve
mentioned previously, when speed happens,
things change, and your timing
and input levels need to change with
them in relation to the speed you are
going. It’s a witch’s brew, folks. But the
bottom line remains: Your inputs should
never unduly unsettle the car. Now, you
may go out as a passenger with your
instructor or another driver, and be
shocked to see that he or she seems to
ignore what is preached. They seem to
drive quite abruptly and aggressively.
Well, don’t be fooled; remember, it’s all
relative.
They are likely going a lot faster than
you—particularly in the turns—and what
seems abrupt is only what is necessary
to make the car do what the driver
wants it to do. Different cars and speeds
require different levels of input, and as
the speed rises, the inputs must be
more assertive. There is a key element—
one that we have discussed before—to
concentrate on in such situations. Don’t
necessarily focus on the driver... focus
on what the car is doing!
I learned this lesson early, and well,
from one of the masters of the art. My
first-ever performance driving
experience was at Watkins Glen at the
Porsche Precision Driving School
conducted by Derek Bell. I was fortunate
to have Mr. Bell pilot my pokey old ‘84
944 around the Glen at speeds that I
had never imagined, in a car he’d never
driven. What initially stunned me was
his driving style. It seemed to me at the
time that he was a madman behind the
wheel. His concentration was immense;
his eyes, like laser beams, focused up
the road. His craggy face was drawn
tight. His hands were a blur on the steering
wheel as his arms flailed—making
the minutest of corrections—for reasons
18
May 2010
that I couldn’t fathom at the time. All I’d
heard in the classroom was “smooth,
smooth, smooth,” and yet here’s this
crazy person driving my car! Then
something entirely seminal dawned on
me.
While the driver seemed crazed, the
car fairly floated through the turns as if
on gossamer wings. The changes in the
car’s attitude were barely perceptible,
and it was the insanely acute vigilance
of the driver that was making it so. It
changed my thinking and my focus right
then and there. I was indeed lucky!
What I have found with my students is
that when they learn the line and begin
to pick up the pace, their brains become
hurried, their excitement and anticipation
bubbles over, and smoothness and
timing usually goes out the window. The
amazing thing is that most often, the
student is making erroneous inputs to
the car without even realizing it. “We
ran wide of our apex back there, eh?”
“On the track, the
loud guy is
generally not the
fast guy.”
“Yeh... I can’t seem to get the car over
there!” “Why did you jump on the throttle
so hard at the turn-in?” “Huh?!... did
I?” “Didn’t you notice the front end jump
out?” “Yeh, but I didn’t know I stomped
on the throttle...” It’s amazing, but it
happens all the time. Time to refocus,
and listen to the car... remember?
Now, if the above student had been
listening to the car, even though he may
have hit a perfect line, he would have
known immediately that his stomping on
the throttle kicked the front end out,
causing him to run wide of his apex.
Does fixing this problem assure a good
apex? Nope. So, what to do? Well, we
said don’t tromp the throttle, but you
may add it at your discretion to fine
tune your line. If you have progressed to
the point where you are setting the car
hard in a clean four-wheel drift and are
running toward your apex, minute addi-
tions and subtractions of throttle, along
with small steering corrections, will help
you fine-tune your line and give you that
perfect tight apex.
If you’ve ever been fortunate enough
to do a real skid pad, then remember.
Remember how you were instructed to
approach the limit of adhesion, gradually
bringing the speed up until the car
started sliding? At this point, you were
instructed to play with the throttle
slightly; just a tad more pushed the nose
wider, the minutest release on it tightened
your line. If you slammed it shut,
the rear end stepped right out. Remember?
Doesn’t everybody play racer on
the offramps? Try it tomorrow. Cruise
through a ramp at a pace such that you
feel a little tug, then back off the throttle
a touch. Wow... the nose tucks in and
the line tightens right up! Now add that
throttle back in. Pushes right back out!
Hmmmmm. It works for any car! Heck,
I’ve even done it in my E450 Ford van
with the car and trailer in tow, although
that may not be advisable as a rule!
This is really what we mean by the
term Throttle Steer. Sure, tire-smoking
power slides and chop-throttle oversteer
are impressive, and technically under
that heading too, but they have only the
smallest of roles in a skilled driver’s
dossier. Look, anyone can bang on
drums, right? Many can even play loud
and fast. But only the true artist can
play soft and fast. On the track, the loud
guy is generally not the fast guy. He’s in
the weeds. So... how fast do you want to
be?
AMR Golf Tournament
Saturday, July 24 • Woodmoor Pines Golf and Country Club
What better way to spend a beautiful
summer day than a round of golf with
your favorite Porsche Club friends, to
benefit The Boys and Girls Club of the
Pikes Peak Region. This year, we’ll be
holding the annual AMR golf tournament
on Saturday, July 24th. We are once
again returning to the beautiful and private
Woodmoor Pines Golf and Country
Club in Monument, CO (conveniently
located between Colorado Springs and
Denver).
This is always a great chance for AMR
and RMR members to get together and
have some fun. As in past years, the format
will be a scramble, making it
friendly to both regular and occasional
golfers. Prizes will be awarded for top
gross and net teams, and door prizes
will be awarded as well. We are also
planning on our traditional hole-in-one
prize of a brand-new Porsche!
i get around Dick Badler
I Take It All Back
Several months ago
in this space, I
pondered the incongruity
of car culture in
LA, of the most rabid
car nuts on earth having virtually
nowhere to go with their memorable
machines, because of a blanket of
impenetrable gridlock.
Well, I take it back. On a recent trip to
southern California, I found auto
nirvana. I made it to the original Cars
and Coffee in Irvine.
All it takes is a commitment to one’s
alarm clock. The appointed Saturday
morning, I was on the 405, heading
south from Santa Monica, at 6 AM sharp.
And, guess what, there was no traffic.
What I did see were a Viper ACR, with
that big, big rear wing, a late ‘80s Turbo
Porsche and—I passed it—an Ariel Atom,
with the driver sporting a full face helmet,
all bundled up in the cool morning
air.
It should have been my tip-off. I had
directions, but once I got close, I just followed
what soon became a sea of
exotica. My rental and I were directed to
“visitor” parking. That’s right, they had
signs up. And the place was mobbed—at
7 AM precisely. Walking to the open-air
lots (yes, lots), what’s the very first car I
saw? I swear? A triple black Enzo. And
still, at that hour, the parade of cars
entering the show area was an unending
drool-a-thon.
I ticked them off—two more Ariel
Atoms, Callaway Vettes, several Mini
Cooper S models (the original, RHD),
perhaps every street Porsche ever
Dick Badler
made, a line of Gallardos that must have
been ten cars long, a Novitec Ferrari 430
with a side badge that advertised 750
HP, and an original racing 427 Cobra. I
spoke to the owner, who said so. And it
certainly sounded like it, when he
started the motor to leave.
Which is the mind-blower. They all
drove in! On the road! On real roads that
real people drive on! Look to the left,
two 300SL Gullwings. To the right, a ’30s
Frazer Nash.
And then there was the ultimate mindboggler
of the show, at least to me: a
Lamborghini Reventón. Yes. The factory
only produced 20, at around $1.5M
MSRP per, depending on the Euro/Dollar
exchange rate. It, too, was driven in.
And it was for sale.
General Motors actually
had two spots marked off.
And in the spots were a
Cadillac CTS-V sedan and
a CTS-V coupe. With two
guys, who looked like
they stepped out of GM’s
West Coast design studio,
answering questions.
Maybe they were from
the studio; I couldn’t get
close enough.
For what it’s worth, the
clear style-setter was the
flat black look. On a Bentley
Continental GT. On a Ferrari 430. I
don’t get it. But then again, I don’t get
the ‘23 T hot rods and the Deuce
Coupes that were also in abundance.
Think about it. This happens every
Saturday, year-round. It was early
March. The sun was shining. The cars
glistened. I heard the blaap of a race
motor, off in the distance. An E-Type
came inching around, looking for its
mates. Step back—a gaggle of MV
Agusta F4 bikes just arrived.
People were sitting on lawn chairs,
along the roads leading into the parking
lots. Not in front of their cars, like you
see at typical car shows. No, no, no.
They were watching the parade—a
parade of car culture gone hyper. Which
got real interesting at 9 AM, when everyone
just sort of began leaving, as if the
music stopped.
My understanding is that it all got
started at some strip mall parking lot
rmrporschenews May 2010
Dick Badler
near the beach in Crystal Cove, in ’05,
and it grew until it got too big, and the
organizers moved it to the parking lot
for what was Ford’s Performance Automotive
Group headquarters, which is
now headquarters for Taco Bell and
Mazda USA. Then they started “franchising”
the idea, so that there’s now at
least 12 similar branded events around
the US and, from what I can tell, some
seven in Europe.
There’s one outside Denver. Here’s the
link: denver.carsandcoffee.info. And
here’s the link to the main site:
online.carsandcoffee.info. Check them
out for yourself.
I got curious and decided to check out
what else goes on in Southern California
on weekends. And, lo and behold, what I
found was a complementary event, in
Woodland Hills, in the Valley, on
Sundays, called Super Cars Sunday,
sponsored in part by an exotic car
dealer called “The Auto Gallery.” Here’s
the link: www.supercarsunday.com.
Then I found a site called SoCal Car
Culture.Com. Here’s the link: www.
socalcarculture.com/events.html. Pages
and pages of events. Nightly cruises.
Runs. Car shows. Even live traffic maps.
Hey, remember, this is LA.
Walking around the original Cars and
Coffee, what song popped into my
head? No, not some Dick Dale lookingfor-Gidget
surf riff. No, it was “Oh Happy
Day.” And I’m not religious. But it
seemed right—the transcendant part, at
least. I’ve never made it to Monterey for
the Historics, but based on my SoCal
excursion, if I went, I’d probably sprout
wings.
draw bar trailer easily fits in the back of
a small garage and still room to park the
car! Trailer is heavy duty enough to
serve as a good utility trailer. With 13”
wheels no problem driving down the
road at 75mph+. Sits low enough so it
does not block rear vision. Comes with a
hitch that fits an early Boxster. Wiring
harness to connect into tail lights
included. Air tank, race wheels and tires
not included. This is a great deal at
$500.00! Pics online at pca.org in The
what we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have
fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses,
rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities
to enjoy and learn about your Porsche.
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in
which participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in
advance). A tour may vary in length from a day
trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or
two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are
plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or
obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined
with rallies to add variety and a dose of
competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR typically
offers several. A number of tours are
usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified by a
set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on
public, paved roads, and speed limits are always
observed. The two major types of rallies are the
Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick
rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to
follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the
correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving
at checkpoints (the locations of which are not
known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally
is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves
solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at
least one of each type—are offered. Porsche
Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a
Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined by
orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top
speeds are generally moderate, topping out
around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear
for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at
long intervals—typically only one or two cars are
on the course at any time. Autocross is a safe
way to experience high-performance driving
while learning to drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new members.
Historically, a membership meeting begins
with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by
the evening’s program. The content of the program
varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show”
from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as
accomplished Speed World Challenge racer
Randy Pobst.
RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise
stated, are held the first Thursday of the month.
Different venues and topics will keep the meetings
fresh and inviting. Watch RMR Porsche News
and the RMR Web site for details. And if you
have any ideas for a program, talk to the Program
Committee Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like—a session
in which a technical topic is discussed. Not
just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate
practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such
as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented
by experienced Porsche technicians,
an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX
school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a
major event at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe, controlled
environment for high-performance driving
instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the
opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the
help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled,
closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA
philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is
on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE
experience may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However,
some DE events are followed immediately by a
time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to
quantify their performance. Lap times may then
be used to measure personal improvement, for
bragging rights, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the
La Junta, Pueblo, and (possibly in the future)
Pikes Peak International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A
race weekend consists of a number of practice
sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often
involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.
As a Club Racing license (issued by PCA
National) is required for competition, club racers
are serious and experienced drivers. The cars
they bring with them to the track can be quite
impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club
Racing program was inaugurated with the RMRhosted
“First Ever Anywhere” club race at
Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event of
this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of
volunteers. However, a club race is also one of
most exciting events to participate in, so be sure
to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High
Plains Raceway which, combined with the “Super
DE” event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!
many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and
RMR Porsche News.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically
in the “off months” when few driving events
take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions
are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in as
close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number
of judged categories usually exist, typically
differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,
Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver”
or “full preparation” or somewhere in between).
Cars sometimes may be entered as “display
only,” for owners who wish to participate but not
compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local concours
events each year, including the annual Exotic
Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting
United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The
annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours
each year.
