HAPPY 40 TH BIRTHDAY ‗89s!!!
As I write this newsletter, I‘ve just returned
from 16 interviews with local high school
seniors applying to Dartmouth. For those of
you who aren‘t keeping track, these students
were BORN in 1989. Yikes! Most of the
students I met (with help from Rob Adams
‘90) were extraordinarily talented,
thoughtful and involved in our community.
The lucky few who are accepted will be a
great asset to the Class of 2012. If you‘ve
never done alumni interviews, it‘s a great
way to provide a service to the admissions
office and get a glimpse of the young people
who are the future of Dartmouth. And yes,
it‘s also a great opportunity to savor
memories of your Dartmouth days. Call the
Admissions office if you‘d like to help next
year.
Mark Your Calendars: APRIL 26, 27, or
28 th is a 1989 40th Birthday Bash in your
city!
A team of your classmates have been busy
planning Class of 1989 40 th Birthday parties
all over the country. We did this for our 30 th
and it was fun to connect and celebrate with
Dartmouth friends, new and old. So, check
the invitation on the back page for the
location near you, get a babysitter and put it
in your Blackberry—then toast the Class of
1989 turning 40! If you don‘t live near one
of the party locations but there are a few
Dartmouth folks nearby, grab a beer or a
glass of wine together and drop us a green
card with the details.
COLLEGE NEWS
First NCAA team title for the College in 31
years!
BARTLETT, NH Good things come to those
who wait.
After a 31-year NCAA team title drought,
Dartmouth won the 2007 NCAA Men's and
Women's Skiing Championships here Saturday,
marking the first NCAA team title for the
College since 1976.
The Big Green had solid performances by both
men's and women's teams in the slalom event,
besting the University of Denver by 50 points. In

the final team standings, the Big Green stood
atop the heap with 698 points; Denver was
second with 648; Colorado, the 2006 champion,
was third with 592.
"Just awesome ... great. I can't think of any other
way to put it," said Director of Skiing Cami
Thompson. "I'm so proud of every single one of
them. We knew coming in to [the
Championships] that there was an outside chance
we could do it, and every single one of them
performed as well as they possibly could."
The Big Green got All America performances
from junior Dave Chodounsky and senior Evan
Weiss in the men's race, and senior Lindsay
Mann and junior Michelanne Shields in the
women's event.
Chodounsky, the 2005 men's slalom champion,
was narrowly edged by Denver's Adam Cole.
Cole's two-run time of 1:43.36 was just .04
seconds better than Chodounsky. Middlebury's
Andrew Wagner was third. Weiss finished in
eighth place.
It wasn't easy for Chodounsky, who was initially
disqualified in the first run when he appeared to
straddle a gate. But video review of the run
showed the Chodounsky cleared the gate,
keeping him in contention.
"The snow changed consistency a bit," said
Chodounsky, "and I slid, then hooked up a bit,
then got shot out. I'm not exactly sure what
happened, but it could have been worse."
In the women's race, senior Lindsay Mann, in her
final collegiate race, took fourth place to nail
down the Big Green team win. Mann was .44
seconds off the winning pace of New Mexico's
Malin Hemmingson, who took the title in
1:45.77. Colorado's Lucie Zikova was second;
New Hampshire's Veronique Archambault-Leger
was third.
Knowing that the title was there for the taking,
Mann says she felt little pressure. "This is my
last race, and [women's alpine coach] Christine
[Booker] told me to just go for it and have fun."
"That's what I always tell Lindsay," said Booker
after the race. "When she's having fun, she skis
fast."
Dartmouth junior Michelanne Shields, a 2006
All American, repeated the honor this year by
taking 10th in the slalom.
For Dartmouth, it is the first team title since
1976, and the program's third title overall since
1958. In all, nine student-athletes earned All
America honors: Mann, Shields, Chodounsky
and Weiss in Alpine skiing; and senior Sara
Studebaker and Michael Sinnott and juniors
Susan Dunklee, Elsa Sargent and Ben True in
cross country racing.
CLASS NEWS
Our Progeny
Even though we are either 40 or headed
there soon, this class hasn‘t slowed its
production of future alums, my family
included.
Julie Livingston and her husband Hamish
Fallside added another boy to their brood of
3. Baby Zed was born in May, 2006 and is
adding to the excitement in Dr. Julie‘s busy
household.
Allison Moir Smith and her husband Jason
welcomed Atticus Moir Smith in November
2006. He joins big sister Annabel, 2, in
their new home in Manchester-by-the-Sea,
Massachusetts.
Kelley Busby and her husband Erik
welcomed their first child, Sophia Sage, On
May 19, 2006. They also built a new home
in Sausalito, CA.
Ed Witham writes: ―My wife Tami and I
welcomed our second son Brandon Cole into
the world on Feb. 19th. He was a bit early
and had to spend a while in the NICU at NY
Presbyterian. But, everyone is healthy and
back home in Old Tappan, NJ now. His big
brother Dean can't wait for him to grow up
enough to play tag.‖ Soon, grasshopper.
Dan and Kim Rivers wrote announcing the
birth of their twins. The babies, Daniel
Eugene Douglas Rivers III and Lorena Faith
Dukes Rivers were born on December 15,
2006 and join their big sisters. Dan regrets
that he will not be able to attend the 40 th
Birthday because ―I am still 18 and don't
want to be old......I'm kinda like a black
Peter Pan.......aka PeterDan...‖

Jeannine Laz-Hall writes: ―My husband
Chris and I have been blessed with two
wonderful children, Christopher (2 1/2 yrs.)
and Caroline (3mos). I am still working as
an anesthesiologist in Melbourne, Florida.
Most of my partners have shared with me
that 3-12 yrs. are the best for kids, so I really
look forward to my 40's.
Eric Zaslow reported that he and his wife
Lizzie have had another child, Molly Pearl
Zaslow and that all are healthy and happy.
Josh Adler (now know as J.J., see below)
wrote: ―My wife and I have been living in
Hoboken, NJ for the last 5 years, and we had
a daughter on November 4, 2005: Ryan
Isabel Adler.‖ There are lots of exciting
things going on with Josh, read on . . .
We welcomed our 4 th little one in August. I
just hope that your medical record didn‘t
have ―Advanced Maternal Age‖ stamped all
over it like mine! Lael Kathleen
O‘Shaughnessy is constantly entertained by
the antics of big brother Ian, 8 and sisters
Merrill, 6 and Claire, 4.
Just Married
Steve Blank shared the happy details of his
October 2006 wedding to Rebecca Silsz
‘95. Steve writes: ―We got engaged on
Saturday
night of our 15th class reunion, when I
proposed in the middle of the Green (a spot
we plan to visit many, many times). The
weather was perfect for the wedding
weekend, which made us feel incredibly
lucky. Whatever the weather, we knew the
celebration would be wonderful with the
help of family and friends, including about
20 Dartmouth alumni from the classes of
1986 to 1995. 1989's who joined us included
some of the first people I met at Dartmouth -
fellow Hinman residents(Hinmates?) Rich
Wendel, Jeanne (Lucich) Dwyer, and
Tracy Coleman. It was also fun to have
post-Dartmouth roommates Evan Gewirtz
and Derek Walton join us, along with Pat
Giersch. (Since I mentioned Hinman, I
have to say that we visited campus in
December, and I tipped my cap to the open
space I saw where Hinman once stood...)
Following the festivities, Rebecca and I
returned to our house in the middle of St.
Paul, MN. She works in Product Marketing
at 3M, and I am a Black Belt at GE Money
(formerly known as GE Consumer Finance).
I hope to finish my MBA at "The U"
(University of Minnesota) before the year is
over. If this newsletter comes out before
April 16th, I hope to see some of you in the
Boston area cheering us on in the
Marathon.‖ GO STEVE & REBECCA!!!
Any other newlyweds (or reweds) out
there? We‘d love to hear from you.
Mark Filimonov sent an update on the
changes in his life:
―After being married for 10+ years, my wife
and I peacefully parted company 1.5 years
ago. I didn't expect to be single and pushing
40, but life is full of surprises. Our
daughters are getting bigger every day.
Tamara is 12, in 7th grade, and trying out
for a teen swing dance performance team.
Our youngest daughter, Jane, is in 2nd grade
now, is 7, and likes to play with her bunnies
and cats, as well as read the Rainbow Fairy
and Littles series.‖ Mark operates his own
small business writing and editing marketing
communications pieces for just about any
kind of business--from one-person shops to
multinational corporations. He has written
about engineering design tools, Adobe
Acrobat software, shamanic healing, and
how to simplify your life. ―[The work]
gives me a lot of variety and lets me earn
most of my living sitting around in cafes.
not...‖ You can reach Mark enjoying a latte
Rick Bartlett writes: ―My wife Loring and
I live in NYC with our two boys Jack (4yrs)

and Cole (1.5yrs) I‘ve been with Cittigroup
for 17 years and am currently the Co-Head
of US Equity Capital Markets, a group that
is focused on raising new capital for
corporate clients. My wife is nearly finished
with her doctoral degree in children‘s
psychology at NYU. We spend our
weekends at our house in Salisbury, CT.
People I still see in the NY Metro area
include Stan Green, Jim White, Chris
Hildenbrand, Tim Parrott, Jim Horvath,
Tyler Dickinson and Dave Gazzaniga.‖
In response to our inquiry last month, Eric
Zaslow also reported that Tom Avril and his
wife Karen are the proud parents of two
lovely and very literate little girls, Eleanor
and Charlotte. Tom is the Science Reporter
for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Sean Crane sent in the following: ―I
received my JD from the University of
Colorado in 2002. After working for Legal
Services for a number of years, on the
Navajo and Hopi reservations in northern
Arizona, I am now working at the James E.
Rogers School of Law at the University of
Arizona. Tucson weather is perfect this time
of year and I do not envy anyone who has to
shovel snow or salt their sidewalks.
P.S. Notice the postage stamp on this card –
does it bring back any D memories??‖
Bravo Geeta Anand!
Geeta‘s husband Greg Kroitesh ‘87 wrote:
―I am writing for my wife Geeta Anand,
because I thought her classmates might want
an update. She‘s had a very busy year. In
September, the book that has absorbed three
years of our lives, was finally completed and
published - ―The Cure – How a Father
Raised $100 million- and Bucked the
Medical Establishment – in a Quest to Save
his Children.‖ It has been getting a warm
reception at bookstores and from critics
alike and we are very proud of her. Now
that the book is done she is spending more
of her weekends chasing around her 9 year
old Tatyana and 6 year old, Aleka. She
completed her 8 th year at the Wall St Journal
as Senior staff writer.‖
Geeta’s book is the story of a young father
of 3 who had recently graduated from
Harvard Business School when 2 of his
children were diagnosed with Pompe
Disease ..a rare genetic disorder which only
gave them a short time to live. The book
proceeds to take you through his fight to find
a cure including his founding of a
biomedical company, going through trials
etc, while his kids get sicker and sicker. It
kind of contrasts the emotional family
drama going on with the business side of the
whole thing the father has to deal
with….Take a read of the reviews on
Amazon…definitely makes you want to pick
up the book …Go Geeta!
Kudos to Phil Ginsburg
Adam Glick reports that our classmate, Phil
Ginsburg, was named back in December to
be the next Chief of Staff for the Mayor of
San Francisco. A very exciting
accomplishment.
Josh Adler sent a long email with the scoop
on his life over the last decade: ―I‘ve been
working at Abrams Artists Agency for the
last 9 years in their voiceover division,
finding jobs for actors in commercials, video
games, audio books, promos, Spanish
language, etc. I rep talented up-and-comers,
―working actors‖, and celebrities, and I‘ve
found that my previous life as an actor has
helped me to maintain a talent-focused
approach rather than a bottom-line
approach.
I‘ve also been teaching a 6-week voiceover
workshop to help struggling actors improve
their ―read‖ and get to a place where they
are able to audition more competitively. We
agents tend to participate in showcases
where actors essentially pay to audition for
us one-on-one… After a while, I decided it
would be both more beneficial to the
performers and more satisfying to me to
work in long stretches with the same actors
and help them elevate their game. So far,

there‘s been a consistent waitlist, so I guess
I‘m doing something right.
I ran into Jamie Kershaw a year and a half
ago or so, just before he moved over to
DreamWorks, in a piano bar in NYC called
―Don‘t Tell Mama‖. He was visiting a
friend of his who happened to be a good
friend of one of my clients who was playing
the piano that night… needless to say; it was
a lot of fun to run into him out of the blue in
a piano bar.
My wife and I have been living in Hoboken,
NJ for the last 5 years, and we had a
daughter on November 4, 2005: Ryan Isabel
Adler. She‘s 15 months old now, and
walking all over the place. She also has
decided that Elmo is her personal best
friend, and insists on bringing the Elmo doll
her grandmother gave her just about
everywhere she goes. We‘ve already started
stashing change away into the ―Send Ryan
To Dartmouth‖ fund. I‘m sorry I didn‘t
make it to our last big reunion, because it
would have been nice to catch up with
everyone… I‘ll just have to block out time
for our 20 th and hope we get a chance to see
everyone for our joint 40 th Birthdays.
jj.adler@abramsart.com (there‘s a long story
as to why I‘m suddenly ―J.J.‖ that‘s best told
over a few beers. Any takers?)
Nancy Bernard Felix sent in this sweet ‘89
story:
Last year for my husband's 40th, he got a
new puppy, a gorgeous Chesapeake
Bay Retriever named Ginger. Maggie, our
12 year old yellow lab was fading
fast and we thought that the time was right
for a new puppy. I also decided
that it was time to switch vets and chose to
go to "Katz and Dogs" in Upper
Montclair, NJ. Our fabulous new vet is
Nancy Katz '89. She was absolutely
amazing when it was time to put down our
yellow lab. Even with Maggie gone,
I still get to see Nancy often whenever
Ginger eats a bag of Reeses Peanut
Butter Cups or one of my shoes. Nancy is a
wonderful vet and runs the best
animal hospital ever!
Bands, blogs and more:
Dave Irwin and Mike Stutz saw Eric
Berlin, Esq. play his drums in a
performance of his band, Hung Jury, in
Chicago. Dave said they enjoyed running
into Ron Lepinskas and the numerous
teenage girls fawning over Eric's "primal
sensuality."
Wendy Wilkinson is in Portland, OR where
she has been since she moved there for law
school in 1991. She is married to Stephen
Feldman (Brown ‘89) and has 2 wonderful
kids, Zachary (7) and Sophie (4). Wendy is
a stay-at-home mom and tutors math and
French while Sophie is in preschool. She
occasionally runs into Andy Wells, whose
wife went to law school with Wendy. She
says the Wells, with their daughter in tow,
spent last year traveling all around the
world.
Doug Anderson writes: ―My annual trip to
the Consumer Electronics Show this year
inspired me to start a consumer technology
related blog. The URL
(http://www.peoplesrepublicof.com) was
originally intended to talk about news in our
neighboring suburb of Oak Park, but it
ended up being used for this purpose as
well.‖ Check it out.
Tammy Krutchkoff dropped us an email in
December. Tammy lives in Marina Del
Ray, CA (LA area) on the beach, with her
partner Bart and their 15 month old
daughter, Sachi. Tammy is phasing out her
business as a film composer agent, and is
starting a new one in real estate with
Sotheby‘s Santa Monica.
Tammy reported that she recently saw
Justine Klineman at a whale rescue benefit
in Venice. She also talked with Michele
Kelly who is living in San Francisco now
but comes down to LA for an occasional
party or 2. Jenney Schofield Porteus and
Jessy Berg also live in the San Francisco
area. Jenney has 2 boys (5 and 2) with her
husband Brad, and Jessy has been traveling
a lot overseas (she was in London at the

time of Tammy‘s communication) with her
husband Jeffrey.
Just before the holidays, Tammy was
looking forward to heading back east to visit
old freshman year roommates, Barbara
Kuck Close and Susan Kuran Lodge. She
also planned on seeing Shannon Gorrell
Reid and Erin Johns Flanigan while in
Boston.
On a November wine trip to Napa, I saw
Laura Bedford for tea (much needed after
a day of drinking). My newborn needed to
meet her ―Auntie La‖ and Laura obliged by
coming up from San Francisco. She is back
in the Bay area doing an internship with the
Hoover Institute related to her master‘s
degree studies in art/ document
preservation. While sipping my tea in her
parents‘ kitchen, I admired the gorgeous
fabric on the chairs. Laura (always
modest) finally revealed that she designed
and wove it herself. How cool is that? She
and her wonderful pack of dogs will return
to Boston when the internship is complete.
1987 London History FSP: This winter, I
saw the Six Wives of Henry the VIII on PBS
and the host was none other than David
Starkey, our visiting professor in History.
Prof. Starkey also taught part of the History
FSP in London and was a source
of inspiration. I called Jeanne DeSa and
she had also seen our eccentric prof on the
telly. We laughed and laughed about the
exploits of our FSP. We‘d like to reconnect
with our FSP gang—did you knit on the
underground? Go running in Hyde Park?
Live over an Indian restaurant? Remember
our search for pumpkin pie in Harrods‘s
Food Hall? Remember Paul busking in the
Underground? Drop a line and let us know
what you‘re doing now.
Any other pleas for info about FSP groups?
Drop us a line and we‘ll print it in the next
newsletter.
New Positions and Locations
London, England
Eric Rovick reports: “Our family made it
back to Hanover for the Christmas holidays.
We didn‘t see any ‗89s but hooked up with
‘93 Chris Greenwold. We did make it to the
Dartmouth vs. North Dakota hockey game,
which we enjoyed immensely despite the
Big Green‘s loss. I have started a new job
following a year long sabbatical. In
Back Home in New Orleans
Neil Abramson, his wife Kim and their 4
year old son Parrish are home in New
Orleans, having endured a 2 month
evacuation after Katrina. Neil writes:
―Comparatively speaking, my family and I
were very fortunate post-Katrina as we did
not flood, although we had a little wind
damage and also dealt with the ordeal of a
seven week evacuation. As they say here
though, "we can't complain." The recovery
in New Orleans is crawling along. I've
decided that I'm going to run for state
representative in the fall; I realize it's cliché,
but its time for me to do my part (or more of
it). If anyone gets to New Orleans, holler.
Now, off to the parades -- it's Mardi Gras! ―
Boeblingen, Germany
Adrianne Adomeit Batjay just relocated to
Boeblingen, Germany after 15 years in
They are having the cultural transition as
they entered the German school system in
November without knowing any German! A
couple of months later they are fitting in
very well and quickly learning the
