CANTON — The hungry people who showed up for the Salvation Army’s weekly
lunch were delivered a surprise: Pizza.
Those who came to the citadel at 420 Market Ave. S were treated Monday to
hundreds of slices. Five Stark County Pizza Huts each prepared and delivered 20
pizzas.
It was a nice menu change for a group that may not otherwise be able to afford a
pizza meal, said the Salvation Army Major Tom Hinzman.
“The people were very surprised. They were excited,” he said.
The delivery was engineered by Hallrich Inc., which owns 80 Pizza Hut restaurants
in 18 Ohio counties.
It’s part of the program the company launched to deliver pizza from 47 restaurants
to 19 hot-meal programs.
“We will make this donation in an effort to relieve some of the needs, particularly of those who are hungry right here in Northeastern Ohio,” A.E. Szambecki,
Hallrich’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.
“Restaurant companies like mine are struggling as many businesses, but we surviving and it (is) simply the right time to do something good.”
Hinzman said his organization would welcome similar donations from other area companies. Those interested can call the Salvation Army at 330-453-0159.
It is so nice to hear of someone doing something good.
Victor Colaianni
News/articles like this shows that despite what some folks who appear in the 'opinion' columns of the Rep and here in the comments forum say -- Canton still has some fine points such as
businesses going the extra mile that Hallrich's (Pizza Hut) has. Kudos!!
jdawg987
honestly people, there is someone flipping the bill for this. Probably tax payer money, this is ridiculous. My opinion is people who go to soup kitchens are the same people pan handling and
asking people for money downtown. They need to stop mooching off society and get a job
Go Pizza Hut!
mary v parker
Very nice PH.
mary v parker
jdawg987 How much did this cost you? If you don't want to help others, that's your business, but why throw a wrench into a good gesture that someone else does?
kitty burgett
It took about an hour after you first predicted it, theame19. We keep hearing, 'Let people choose when to be charitable!' Then when someone does just that, we hear complaining. Why is it so
difficult to accept that not EVERYTHING come out of YOUR pocket? Just because you are not familiar with the concept of giving, doesn't mean it doesn't live in the hearts of others.
Canton_Soldier
Very generous, although I think their pizza is not up to par with any of the other chains, but kudos!
snufus
Excellent service to the community!
Some people would complain if the owner of Pizza Hut donated and delivered those pizzas to THEIR doorstep himself.
pete3050
See......there are caring people out there. THANKS Pizza Hut! I will make the effort to get my next pizza from the Hut!
I hope someone else who has the means available will follow suit! This is the nicest story I've read on here in a LONG time! ....and nobody got shot or anything! YAY!!
tennessee
I call Fark. Advertisement masquerading as news story. Its a great thing Pizza Hut did. but its not news. its Fark.
midnightmoses
I think I will order a couple of P'Zones for lunch, today. Nice gesture, PH. And, jdawg987, I'd still feed even you if you should ever be in the situation alot of people are finding themselves in these days.
doncirelli
Did you pay for all those pizzas Frank?
Obviously, you have never helped out at a soup kitchen. You should try it sometime, it might change your perceptions. Lots of children, handicapped and old people. You wanna hire them?
mrch54
What a wonderful thing to do. thank you Pizza Hut, and God bless all those who were involved to make this happen.
HeresJohnny
A good promotional for business. But it is cheaper to make home made pizzas at home.
Go Eagles
What a great story! I just found out that Olive Garden does this too with leftover food at night. Those less fortunate surely appreciate this!
tennessee
'But it is cheaper to make home made pizzas at home.' Take a bun, lay it open, spread Ragu on top and then parm cheeze. Pop into the toaster oven. Tastes real good shortly after 4:20.
Thank you.
As one of those who has had to give up the extras, like delivery pizza, I totally think this was a great kindness. It is amazing how much you enjoy a pizza when you have to give it up for a while,
to have it be a total surprise is even better. Yeah, it got them publicity, good for them. They could not have known that in advance.
graham79
Good to hear, I'm sure it was greatly apreciated. I find nothing wrong with Pizza Hut pizzas.
kitty burgett
To make home made pizza at home, first you have to have a home.
keithincanton
wow a company gives something back to a city and still gets ripped? fark? well next time you buy 100 of anything and give it away i will be more then happy to publicly pat you on the back as well.
GOOD JOB from THE HUT/WING STREET
jenny p
Way to go, local Pizza Huts!
tennessee
keithincanton, I didn't rip Pizza Hut, in fact I gave them a clap. I ripped the Rep for putting this 'news' item as the featured article on the website. Besides, if I bought 100 of something and gave
it away, I'm doing it out of generosity, not for the need for a public pat on the back. And its called just 'giving', not 'giving back'. Giving back implies that the folks at the Salvation Army first gave
something to Pizza Hut, or else Pizza Hut forcible took something, and is now giving it back.
doncirelli
I doubt the recipients of this kindness knew, or even cared, whether Pizza Hut was getting some 'free publicity' out of this. All they knew was that they got to eat like the rest of America for a little while.
Personally, I don't care what motivated the managers at Pizza Hut to donate their excellent product. It doesn't cost me anything to commend them for their generosity. I like their pizza. I eat there once
in awhile, anyway. But I will feel even better next time I go there, knowing that this company shares with the less fortunate. Good for them. Please do this again, sometime.
