The focus of our product development<br />
is centred on process requirements for<br />
<strong>thermoregulation</strong>. Our target of remaining<br />
the leaders in environmentally-friendly<br />
refrigeration and thermal control<br />
is reflected in the catalogue.<br />
Our early and voluntary decision to<br />
cease using CFC and HCFC refrigerants<br />
in 1994 has been followed by our recent<br />
decision and ability to offer refrigeration<br />
machines that use ZERO impact refrigerants<br />
(natural refrigerants).<br />
Precise <strong>thermoregulation</strong>: The range,<br />
over 500 models wide, offers various<br />
models of cooling and heating circulators.<br />
Varying cooling and heating powers<br />
of between 0.1 kW and 130 kW with a<br />
temperature range from -120°C to 400°C<br />
guarantees that we have a product that is<br />
perfect for your application/process.<br />
We have separated the product range<br />
into three groups.<br />
1. Convential bath-circulators:<br />
the Compatible Control Range<br />
2. Hydraulically sealed circulators:<br />
the Unistats<br />
3. Chillers: the Minichillers, Unichillers<br />
Our convential bath-circulators are<br />
named „Compatible Control“ range because<br />
of their unique electronic controllers<br />
which can be freely exchanged between<br />
models. The simple models have<br />
a pressure pump and are typically used<br />
for the temperature control of objects<br />
in their bath. By using a pump adaptor<br />
they become an economical solution<br />
for the <strong>thermoregulation</strong> of small externally-closed<br />
systems (refractometers,<br />
viscometers etc.). The more sophisticated<br />
Compatible Control circulators have<br />
a <strong>high</strong> performance variable-speed<br />
pump. When used in conjunction with<br />
an optional pressure sensor, the output<br />
maximum pump pressure can be regulated.<br />
The suffix „vpc“ (Variable Pressure<br />
Control) identifies these models.<br />
In 1990, the Tango Technology and Unistats<br />
began to dominate process thermal<br />
control. Now, over fifty models allow the<br />
same thermal regulation concept to be<br />
employed from drug discovery through<br />
scale-up, pilot plant to production. Highly<br />
efficient thermal transfer capability of<br />
the unique design provides the fastest<br />
ramp rates and responses to changing<br />
thermal loads during reactions and<br />
crystallisation processes. This results in<br />
faster process times and replication of<br />
results leading to <strong>high</strong>er yields, greater<br />
purity and consumption of fewer resources.<br />
Operational safety is foremost.<br />
The Tango Technology‘s ability to transfer<br />
thermal energy makes it the safest<br />
choice and only reliable choice to control<br />
a fast-running exothermic reaction.<br />
Standing still is a backward step for us.<br />
Through your feedback we have further<br />
developed the Tango Technology. Since<br />
its conception more than fifteen years<br />
ago, the next generation of Unistats, forged<br />
in experience and driven by results<br />
is now available. The Tango Nuevo is<br />
the New Dimension! You will find more<br />
information on the „Nuevo“ at the end<br />
of the Unistat chapter.<br />
Last but not least, you will find a wide<br />
assortment of air- and water-cooled<br />
Chillers, the „Unichillers“. Unichillers<br />
have the task of removing process heat.<br />
Expensive mains-supplied cooling water<br />
is replaced by mechanically-cooled,<br />
circulating water systems. The payback<br />
time is often only a few years and, depending<br />
on operation and cost structures,<br />
may sometimes be only a few months.<br />
Unichillers can be fitted with an optional<br />
heater for operation at <strong>high</strong>er temperatures.<br />

Temperature control with in-built flexible control options to address applications and<br />
processes not yet thought of! The principle of Plug-and-Play technology has given our<br />
customers the ability to swap or upgrade systems since 1980.<br />
Because you cannot predict the future,<br />
controllers with Plug-and-Play technology<br />
enable you to adapt to it. The Huber<br />
“Compatible Controllers” fitted to our<br />
thermostats, circulators and chillers are<br />
fully interchangeable with each other.<br />
Upgrading to more features or ease of<br />
support will never be simpler.<br />
The Environment Fully Protected<br />
All Huber refrigeration machines are<br />
CFC and HCFC free. We also are able to<br />
offer refrigeration machines with natural<br />
refrigerants which have ZERO IMPACT<br />
on the environment.<br />
Plug & Play Technology<br />
The CC1, CC2 and CC3 controllers are<br />
fully interchangeable by the user. Designed<br />
for post sale flexibility and support,<br />
they provide the user with varying<br />
control options easily accessed through<br />
an intuitive menu driven display. The<br />
Ministat range offers this flexibility with<br />
the added advantage giving powerful<br />
heating and cooling from an extremely<br />

General Purpose, Low Duty Thermostats<br />

VPC-Models for Higher Demands<br />
For more demanding applications, the<br />
“VPC“range provides more powerful<br />
heating and cooling over a wider temperature<br />
range (-90…300°C) together<br />
with powerful and adjustable pumps.<br />
(Pressure and suction)<br />
Constructed from robust stainless steel,<br />
the practical, functional and sturdy design<br />
gives an unrivalled functional longevity<br />
to these units.<br />
Available as either heating only or heating/cooling<br />
units, the VPC range offers<br />
cooling powers up to 7 kW @ 20°C and<br />
heating powers up to 4 kW. The functional<br />
design gives a further dimension<br />
of flexibility by allowing the use of a<br />
“Calibration Insert” or a “Displacement<br />
Insert” to tune the units to specific applications.<br />
Options for the VPC-range include<br />
“ComBox” (to NAMUR) communication<br />
system/protocol and an external pressure<br />
sensor.<br />

Thermal Insulation<br />
The thermal insulation is constructed<br />
to be vapour-tight over the life of the<br />
unit. The bath and outer surfaces are<br />
welded directly together. No seals or<br />
gaskets. Everything is in one entire<br />
piece.<br />
Stainless Steel Construction<br />
Quality, functionality and longevity.<br />
Stainless steel is used throughout<br />
which makes them resistive to corrosion<br />
and easy to clean.<br />

heat can help warm the lab in winter<br />

carried away when used in the watercooled<br />
mode.
Immersion Thermostats<br />
The CC-E Immersion Thermostats are<br />
the basis for many combinations using<br />
polycarbonate and stainless steel baths.<br />

Bridge Thermostats<br />

The insulated stainless steel baths are suitable for use up to 200°C. All models have a bridge-mounted CC-E Immersion Thermostat.<br />
With a pump adaptor, this combination can also be used with external, closed applications. The temperature stability,<br />

Good things come in small packages! Thanks to<br />
their low bath volumes the CC202C and CC205B are<br />
especially suitable to control the temperature of small<br />
external application. The temperature of small objects<br />
can also be controlled by placing them directly in the<br />
bath of the CC202C. Both models are available in the<br />
variants: CC1 – simple; CC2 – comfortable; and CC3 –<br />
communications equipped. The maximum temperature<br />
is 200°C. The temperature stability, in accordance with<br />

Temperatures up to 300°C- the extremely compact models have the<br />

The combination of the CC-E immersion thermostat with an insulated cooling bath is the economical alternative for application<br />
temperatures from -20°C/-30°C to 200°C. With a pump adaptor (see accessories page 22) this combination can also be used for<br />
external, closed applications. Pump: maximum flow 10 l/min; maximum pressure 0.2 bar. The temperature stability, in accordance<br />

The Cooling and Heating Thermostat<br />
for variable bath sizes<br />
Unique in the world. The Variostat can control the<br />
temperature in any bath size from -30°C to 150°C.<br />
The single-minded construction allows the user the<br />
greatest flexibility. The smooth, controllable “vpc”<br />
pressure and suction pump, allows the circulation<br />
in any bath size to be optimally controlled. Also, the<br />
pump pressure to an external application can be precisely<br />
set and controlled, from the user-menu, using<br />
an optional pressure.<br />

The K6 Models are the compact cooling and heating bath thermostats for temperatures from -25°C to 200°C. Heating capacity<br />
2 kW. With the integrated pump adaptor, the combination of this miniature cooling bath and the CC-E immersion thermostat<br />

same sheet of stainless steel. This eliminates<br />
the need for a gasket between the<br />
bath and the frame.<br />
Thermal transfer from the bath to the<br />
outer casing is prevented by an innovative<br />
thermal control system that prevents<br />
build up of condensation around<br />
the bath opening when running cold and<br />
from heating up during <strong>high</strong> temperature<br />

Immersion Coolers<br />
„Dip“ or „Immersion“ coolers are ideal for simple cooling applications when low<br />
temperatures are required such as vapour traps or for cooling individual flasks.<br />
They are also commonly used to remove heat from the baths in the „A“ and<br />
„B“ series. The units with an “E” have the capability to control the temperature<br />
to a stability of +/- 0,5 K to DIN 12876. All models can be delivered with a flexible<br />

Measuring method<br />
The temperature constancy specified in<br />
the technical data is measured in accordance<br />
as follows:<br />
The sensor of the test thermo meter is<br />
located in the centre of the bath and at<br />
half the overall depth. The preconditioning<br />
time (τ) of the sensor is 5 or 6 seconds<br />
at most. Heating thermostats are<br />
evaluated using water at a tem perature<br />
of 70°C cooling thermo stats using alcohol<br />
at a tem perature of -10°C.<br />
Heating thermostats are opera ted under<br />
load so that a so-called typical cooling<br />
water current has to flow. In cooling<br />
thermostats a load of this kind is generated<br />
by the pump and transmission<br />

tween the environment and<br />
-10°C. A control sensor with<br />
=5 seconds would be far too<br />
sluggish for a thermostat. We<br />
use sensors with approx. 1.5<br />
seconds. You will therefore<br />
see a greater fluctuation on<br />
the digital actual value display<br />
than corresponds to the<br />
measurement in the centre of<br />
the bath.<br />
Thermostats<br />
as calibration baths<br />
Thermostats are also used as<br />
calibrating baths. However, if<br />
you wish to test tem perature<br />
sensors using a small mass,<br />
for example, the following<br />
may occur:<br />
The calibrating sensor ( = 5 s)<br />
is in the centre of the bath and<br />
shows a fluctu ation of 0.01K.<br />
The test piece A is lo cated directly adjacent<br />
to this, the test piece B is in one<br />
corner of the bath and the test piece C<br />
in the other corner.<br />
The absolute heat capacity of the test object<br />
(the mass) is perhaps less and the<br />
heat transmission (surface times value)<br />
possibly greater than that of the calibrating<br />
sensor, and an unknown temperature<br />
gradient exists in the bath. In this<br />
case each test piece will be exposed to<br />
a different tempera ture fluctuation, but<br />
the silly thing is that this fluctuation<br />
is not known. A standard<br />
thermostat can be a good<br />
calibrating bath if the volume<br />
is large the preconditioning<br />
time of the test piece is great,<br />
and if the temperature gradient<br />
can be incorpo rated in the<br />
testing tole rance.<br />
For <strong>high</strong>er demands, aluminium<br />
car tridges „modelled on<br />
a Swiss cheese“ can be used,<br />
but the better solution for this<br />
is the calibration insert:<br />
Function principle<br />
The thermostat medium at constancy<br />
flows through the heat exchanger (A)<br />
and via the distributor (B) down into the<br />
calibrating bath. Temperature fluctuations<br />
in the thermostat are evened out<br />
in (A) by overlap. The entire system acts<br />
as a calorimeter. There are virtually no<br />
gradients and no delay in the case of<br />
swift ramps. Temperature stability can<br />
be improved by a factor of 5 to 10. The<br />
cali bration baths CAL1 - CAL4 (page 33)<br />
and the UNICAL (page 34) work with the<br />
same principle.<br />

SpyLight<br />
SpyLight is software for the visualisation<br />
and documentation of process relevant<br />
data. The communication can be via the<br />
RS 232, RS485 or TCP/IP. The installa-tion<br />
is simple. SpyLight requires very little<br />
disk space and is simple to use. The<br />
logged data is displayed against time.<br />
The axes can be scaled as required. The<br />
zoom function allows easy evaluation of<br />
short time frames.<br />
SpyWatch<br />
SpyWatch is based on the SpyLight software<br />
but offers more features. Installation<br />
and operation is identical. SpyWatch<br />
can operate up to 10 channels simulta-<br />
neously. Each channel is independently<br />
documented and the graphic options can<br />
be configured as required. SpyWatch allows<br />

Scale-Up<br />
The Unistats cover a temperature of<br />
-120°C to 400°C. They range in cooling<br />
powers from 0,7 to 130 kW and heating<br />
powers from 1,5 kW to 80 kW. A low internal<br />
volume means that this energy is<br />
transmitted to the process (watts/litre<br />
DIN12876). Uniformity in technology<br />

The Unistat range was first introduced<br />
over 14-years ago. It was and remains<br />
unique in the level of control it gives<br />
to the user and the way in which such<br />
massive cooling and heating powers are<br />
not just generated, but also transferred<br />
to your process.<br />
The Unistat range is designed to give the<br />
operator extremely tight control over the<br />
temperature of a process regardless of<br />
the varying thermal loads generated by<br />
chemical reactions.<br />
The low internal volume ensures that the<br />
cooling and heating power generated by<br />
the machine controls the temperature of<br />
the process … not a large reservoir of<br />
fluid. (Watts/Litre DIN 12876). This allows<br />
rapid changes in temperature and<br />
tight control over the flow of thermal<br />
energy.<br />
The hydraulically sealed fluid system<br />
means no oil vapours or oil cracking at<br />
<strong>high</strong> temperatures and no moisture absorption<br />
at low temperatures. You can<br />
expect far longer life times and extended<br />

UNISTATS Tango Principle<br />
Tango Technology<br />
and the Unistats<br />
Peter Huber realized the concept of a hydraulically<br />
sealed, low volume thermostat<br />
over 15 years ago. The development of the<br />
first systems (and continuing improvements)<br />
was in partnership with close contacts in the<br />
pharmaceutical industry. Following a period<br />
of Beta testing, “Tango Technology” became<br />
commercially available in the “Unistat” range<br />
of products in 1990.<br />
Tango Technology has been refined and the<br />
Unistats have grown to dominate their field in<br />
a variety of applications.<br />
The latest generation of Unistats have increased<br />
the performance by such large margins<br />
with such massive leaps forward in functionality<br />
and control that we had to re-name them.<br />
The “Nuevo” Unistats bring even faster response,<br />
even tighter control and even greater<br />
efficiencies.<br />
For “internal” applications such as test tubes<br />
or flasks that need to be partially or fully<br />
submersed in the reservoir, an “open-bath”<br />
thermostat is ideal.<br />
Open bath thermostats connected to “external”<br />
applications are clumsy and slow<br />
resulting in poor temperature control of the<br />
application. The large fluid volume and poor<br />
thermal transfer of the heat exchanger coils<br />
immersed in it add up to slow ramping times<br />
and lethargic response to changing thermal<br />
loads such as when a heat generating reaction<br />
takes place.<br />
Open-bath thermostats carry operational disadvantages<br />
that have a direct impact on the<br />
process and more importantly, profits.<br />
The main disadvantages are:<br />
1. The reservoir:<br />
The reservoir serves two functions.<br />
– To contain the thermal fluid<br />
– To allow for the expansion of the thermal<br />
fluid as it heats and cools<br />
The larger the external application the greater<br />
the “tidal flow” as the fluid expands and<br />
contracts and so the bath has to be larger to<br />
contain it.<br />
The total thermal load that the cooling and<br />
heating system must “drive” is made up<br />
(mainly) of the total volume of thermal fluid<br />
+ the process. The larger the bath the less<br />
of the generated power will be spent on the<br />
application.<br />
This phenomenon is expressed in “watts per<br />
litre” (w/l). A simple example that demonstrates<br />
this is a kettle. A two litre kettle with a 1<br />
kW heater will have a w/l ratio of 500 w/l and<br />
will take “time x” to boil. The same kettle with<br />
only 1 litre of water will have a ratio of 1000w/l<br />
and will boil in half the time.<br />
Since the control of a reaction depends on the<br />
speed with which the jacket of the reactor can<br />
be adjusted to initiate and maintain the flow<br />
of thermal energy, a large volume of thermal<br />
fluid acts as effective thermal “slug” which<br />
adversely effects response times.<br />
2. The heat exchange surfaces<br />
Thermal transfer depends greatly on surface<br />
area. This phenomenon is expressed as a ratio<br />
of “watts per square centimetre” (w/cm²). The<br />

smaller the surface area the greater this ratio<br />
becomes and the poorer the thermal transfer<br />
becomes. Heat exchangers in the form of coils<br />
have a comparatively small surface area and<br />
so are poor at transferring thermal energy<br />
effectively.<br />
Imagine a sports stadium that holds 50,000<br />
people and it has only one door. Now imagine<br />
if the stadium had open sides. 50,000 people<br />
will be able to transfer are lot quicker through<br />
a larger surface area.<br />
3. Moisture absorption<br />
Water condenses on cold surfaces. At the bath<br />
opening it is seen as condensation but in the<br />
reservoir it condenses on the cold surface and<br />
collects on the evaporator as ice. Since ice is<br />
a good insulator, the growing layer of ice prevents<br />
heat from travelling from the thermal<br />
fluid to the refrigeration system. If the heat<br />
cannot be removed from the thermal fluid, it<br />
cannot be removed from the process.<br />
4. Oil vapours<br />
At elevated temperatures the thermal fluids<br />
give of vapours which condense on laboratory<br />
surfaces. They can also create health and<br />
safety issues and clog HEPA filters. These<br />
vapours also become flammable at temperatures<br />
dependent on the thermal fluids being<br />
used. This limits the operational range of the<br />
thermal fluid.<br />
Tango Technology eliminates all of the above<br />
disadvantages.<br />
The fluid circuit is hydraulically sealed, the expansion<br />
and contraction of the thermal fluid as<br />
it heats and cools is catered for in an “expansion<br />
tank”. This expansion tank is thermally<br />
isolated but mechanically connected to the<br />
circulating fluid system.<br />
This means that no matter what the temperature<br />
is at the process, the fluid in the expansion<br />
tank remains at 2 –3 degrees around room<br />
temperature.<br />
Being hydraulically sealed means that there is<br />
no moisture absorption at low temperatures<br />
and no vapours at <strong>high</strong> temperatures. This has<br />
the effect of widening the operational range of<br />
a thermal fluid. It also means the elimination<br />
of the build up of oily residues in the laboratory.<br />
It is important to note that this is achieved<br />
by using “passive” components and the laws<br />
of physics. Mechanical or electro mechanical<br />
valves have not been employed for safety and<br />
efficiency reasons.<br />
Process control is greatly improved because:<br />
1. There is no “reservoir” in the Unistats. The<br />
volume of the circulating thermal fluid is minimal<br />
(2-4 litres in most Unistats) and so most<br />
of the generated heating and cooling power<br />
is spent at the application.<br />
This is expressed in watts per litre and the<br />
Unistats have the <strong>high</strong>est ratios.<br />
This results in extremely fast ramp times. The<br />
temperature of the jacket can be rapidly adjusted<br />
to initiate and maintain the flow of thermal<br />
energy enabling tight control over the most<br />
dynamic of reactions.<br />
2. Plate heat exchangers are used to transfer<br />
thermal energy much more efficiently. The<br />
characteristic of a plate heat exchanger is to<br />
present a very large surface area within a very<br />
low volume (the sports stadium with no sides<br />
as explained above!)<br />
This is expressed in “watts per square centimetre”<br />
(w/cm²). Because this ratio is so low<br />
Unistats capable of not just generating massive<br />
thermal powers but also of transferring<br />
thermal energy rapidly without damaging the<br />
thermal fluid.<br />
The net effect is a smaller, more compact and<br />
process directed thermostat. Results can be<br />
measured in increased yields, faster process<br />
times and duplication of results.

High-<strong>precision</strong> and space-saving temperature<br />
control up to +400°C. The new<br />
HT thermostats of the Unistat cc400<br />
range set new standards in safety, easy<br />
operation, and rapid, dynamic temperature<br />
control. The Unistat cc401w HT<br />
model features integral stepper motor<br />
to control the HT-Cooling, level protection<br />
and configurable overtemperature<br />
protection. Its minimal internal volume<br />
allows the shortest heat-up times to be<br />
achieved, while at the same time the<br />
maximum expansion tank temperature<br />
is limited to +60°C. The working life and<br />
properties of the thermal fluid are also<br />
protected, by avoiding direct contact<br />
between the hot fluid and atmosphere.<br />
The HT thermostats with controlled HT-<br />
Cooling are suitable for temperature<br />
control applications up to +400°C, e.g.<br />
a double-jacketed reaction vessel (reactor),<br />
and pilot plants, as well as the<br />
semiconductor Industry and <strong>high</strong> temperature<br />
distillation. They are suitable to<br />
maintain a <strong>high</strong> constant temperature,<br />
or to contain an exothermic reaction at<br />
<strong>high</strong> temperature.<br />

It takes two to tango!<br />
Thermo dyna mics and Microelectronics.<br />
Hydrau li-cally sealed, no fumes, no oil<br />
cracking, no moi sture absorption, sea led<br />
expansion vessel for open baths. Tango<br />
and Unistat 360 can be located under the<br />
lab bench and the control panel (Plug &<br />
Play) can be located in the work place<br />
via the adapter cable. These units incorporate<br />
the full range of the vapour<br />
compression technology: sin gle and<br />

High Technology „CoolNet“<br />
All Unistat refrigeration machines use the<br />
stepper motor control expansion valve<br />
„CoolNet“, manufactured by Huber. This<br />
ensures that optimal performance from the<br />
evaporator is achieved, and the maximum<br />
possible power is obtained. Without the<br />
CoolNet the Unistats could not achieve such<br />
dynamic, performance, control stability and<br />
operational safety.<br />
New! Ex Zone Solutions<br />
There are two solutions for Ex Zone<br />
<strong>thermoregulation</strong> applications. The first<br />
is to work with a standard unit located<br />
in a safe area and an Ex Rated remote<br />
control panel located in the hazardous<br />
zone. The second solution is to locate<br />
a fully Ex Rated unit (pressure encapsulation,<br />

The „Unistat Minus“ models had been specially developed for work at<br />
low temperatures. These low cost alternatives have powerful refrigeration<br />
and „Tango“ technology with the user friendly controller CC3.<br />
They are available either in flat design (FB) or in a tower casing. Typical<br />
applications are pour point apparatus, low temperature calorimetry,<br />
combination chemistry or crystallisations.<br />

The proven Unistat Technology (Page 28): The<br />
Unistat Tango Nuevo is a hydraulically sealed<br />
circulator with a fully self contained expansion<br />
tank at atmospheric pressure. This means that<br />
the thermostat is atmospherically sealed and<br />
can be located below or above the level of the<br />
application without the risk of siphoning or<br />
back-flow even during power-down or when in<br />

option does not offer<br />

The CC1 to CC3<br />

Unichiller (bench top)<br />
Unichillers are intelligent circulation<br />
coolers in the low-priced, classic desktop<br />
housing.<br />
Typical is the flat construction with a<br />
footprint which orientates itself by the<br />
depth of the desk. The more power ful<br />
models beginning from UC015 fit under<br />
the working bench. All Unichillers work<br />
with the interchangeable CC con trollers.<br />
With the help of a remote kit the controller<br />
can be sepa rated from the Unichiller.<br />
All Uni chillers have an automatic power<br />
adjust ment and can be factory-fitted<br />

Unichillers are intelligent circulation<br />
coolers which have been specially designed<br />
to operate under the workbench<br />
and in general to be connected to an<br />
air-extract duct. The refrigeration unit is<br />
a development, in terms of thermodynamics,<br />
of the unique Unistat Tan go unit.<br />
The term Unichiller indicates that it is universally<br />
suitable for heat dissipation.<br />
Air-cooled refrigeration units which operate<br />
under the workbench or in similarly<br />
con fined areas usually cause heat<br />
to accumu late. Integrated Unichillers are<br />
both air- and water-cooled. The waste<br />
heat can therefore be removed either<br />
using air or cooling water, as desired.<br />
The unit will automati cally switch to water-cooled<br />
operation if the cooling-water<br />
supply is connected. The unit will automatically<br />
switch to air-cooled operation<br />
if the water is not connected or if there<br />
is no cooling-water supply.<br />

From a customer in New Zealand „…I’ve had<br />
a regular trickle of inquisitive people into the<br />
lab to view the Rotacool. I ran it with DCM and<br />
our house vacuum. Using 200 ml in the flask,<br />
I normally recover less than 50 ml. With the<br />
Rotacool down at -10 I got 175 ml and with it<br />
starting off at -20 I got 195 ml back so it does a<br />

Beer „Force Ageing“<br />
Thermostats<br />
We offer a special air- or water chilled<br />
chiller unit for the Beer Forcier-Test. Both<br />
models are equipped with a comfortable<br />
programmer for the usual change between<br />
0°C and 60°C in the usual 24 hour<br />
cycle. The BFT 2 is for 20 bottles in the<br />
original Eurobox.<br />
The CFC free units comply with the safety<br />
class FL, III. Ca sings and bath parts are<br />

Automatic<br />
Compressor Control<br />
Is a procedure used in refrigeration machines<br />
to save energy. A microprocessor<br />
control decides if the refrigeration machine<br />
is required or if it can be switched off.<br />
Automatic Cooling Capacity<br />
Control<br />
is a control routine to save energy. The microprocessor<br />
based controller determines<br />
whether it is possible to reduce the cooling<br />
power. In addition to saving energy, this<br />
also saves wear and tear of the compressor,<br />
reduces the amount of heat discharged<br />
into the environment, and gives better temperature<br />
control.<br />
CCalibration<br />

thermostat, but without considering the<br />
volume of thermofluid in the external circuit.<br />

The difference is the so-called expansion<br />
volume. Especially in the case of external<br />
applications, the size of the expansion tank<br />
must be considered, since the circulating<br />
thermostat must also take up the expansion<br />
of the liquid in the external circuit. The<br />
smaller the surface area of the expansion<br />
tank the lower is the area of thermofluid<br />
open to attack from oxidation and air humidity<br />
absorption.<br />
Clear-view Thermostat<br />
is a bath thermostat with transparent walls<br />
for direct observation of the object being<br />
thermoregulated.<br />
FFlow Rate<br />
is the volume of liquid delivered per time<br />
unit by the circulating pump measured with<br />
water. If only one value is given in the table,<br />
this is the maximum flow rate for a zero<br />
discharge pressure. Pump curves illustrate<br />
discharge in relation to the flow rate.<br />
HHeat Load<br />
is the maximum capacity of the installed<br />

Industrial Thermostats<br />
(UC-Hx)<br />
are refrigerated circulators (Unichiller<br />
range) with factory fitted heating. The<br />
units have <strong>high</strong> cooling, heating and<br />
pump powers which allow quick cooling<br />
and heating rates due to the small<br />
internal volumes. They are ideal for<br />
temperature control in process technology,<br />
within a smaller temperature range<br />
(-20..120°C).<br />
Interface, analogue<br />
is used to input the set value or to output<br />
the actual value of temperature in analogue<br />
form, generally in the form of a current<br />
(4...20 mA).<br />
Interface, digital<br />
is used to transfer data between connected<br />
units in digital form via data cable. The set<br />
and actual temperature values are the main<br />
items transferred. The serial RS 232 interface<br />
allows a point-to-point connection.<br />
This means that at anyone time only two<br />
participants such as the thermostat and the<br />
PC can communicate with each other via<br />
the interface. The RS 485 interface is an<br />
addressable interface where up to 32 participants<br />
can be connected. Each participant<br />
of the bus system has its address.<br />
Intrinsic Temperature<br />
is the operating temperature of a heating<br />
thermostat that is reached when the heating<br />
is switched off. lt depends on the pump<br />
power, thermofluid (viscosity and density)<br />
used and the insulation of the thermostat,<br />
e.g. with or without a cover on the bath.<br />
Operating Temperature<br />
Range<br />
Operating Temperature Range is the temperature<br />
range that is limited by the permissible<br />
lowest and <strong>high</strong>est operating<br />
temperatures.
P<br />
Pressure Pump<br />
is used for circulation of the thermofluid in<br />
an external closed circuit and in the bath.<br />
Pressure/Suction Pump<br />
This pump has a pressure and a suction<br />
stage which are driven by the same motor.<br />
The thermofluid is delivered from the<br />
pressure stage from the thermostat into<br />
the circuit, and the suction stage draws<br />
the liquid back into the thermostat. A pressure/suction<br />
pump can be used in just the<br />
same way as a pressure pump for a closed<br />
circuit. lt has the advantage compared to<br />
a pressure pump that the pressure in the<br />
external circuit falls from positive values<br />
(pressure) in the flow line and to negative<br />
values (suction) in the return line and is almost<br />
zero in the application itself. Thus it is<br />
suitable for the <strong>thermoregulation</strong> of pressure-sensitive<br />
glass vessels. Additionally<br />
it is possible to thermoregulate an open<br />
external circuit (e.g. a bath) with the aid of<br />
a pressure/suction pump. This cannot be<br />
done with a pure pressure pump, since this<br />
delivers thermofluid to the bath. The thermofluid<br />
can only be returned to the bath<br />
via a suction stage. In any case a so-called<br />
constant Ievel device is required to maintain<br />
a constant level in the bath and this<br />
ensures that the flows of both pump stages<br />
are controlled so that they are equal. This<br />
is the only way that the Ievel in the external<br />
bath can be maintained constant.<br />
TTemperature Constance<br />
is half of the temperature difference between<br />
the <strong>high</strong>est and bowest temperatures<br />
which are measured for a specific set<br />
point after attaining a stable value over a<br />
30 minute period. The details are quoted for<br />
70°C (using water) for a heating thermostat<br />
and at -10°C (using ethanol) for a cooling<br />
thermostat (see also DIN 12876).<br />
WWorking Temperature<br />
Range<br />
Working Temperature Range is the temperature<br />
range which can be attained at an<br />
ambient temperature of 20°C by the thermostat<br />
alone and with the exclusive use of<br />
electrical energy. In the case of a heating<br />
thermostat the working temperature begins<br />
above room temperature (as a result<br />
of the energy introduced by the pump and<br />
the effective insulation) and ends at the upper<br />
limit of the operating temperature. The<br />
WTR of a refrigeration thermostat begins<br />
with the lowest operating temperature of<br />
the unit and finishes with the upper temperature<br />
at which the refrigeration machine<br />
can permanently operate.<br />
SSafety Classes<br />
lt is possible to use non-flammable or flammable<br />
bath liquids with thermostats. The<br />
relevant safety requirements are given in<br />
DIN EN 61010-2-010. There is a distinction<br />
made between the NFL classes with built-in<br />
over-heating protection that are exclusively<br />
for non-flammable liquids and FL (Flammable)<br />
with adjustable overtemperature<br />
protection and bw level protection for flam-<br />
RRecirculation Thermostat mable liquids (all Huber thermostats).<br />
(Unistats)<br />
Is a thermostat in which thermofluid is<br />
pumped through an open or closed external<br />
circuit. Recirculation thermostats e.g.<br />
the Unistats can have a thermally discoupled<br />
expansion vessel, whose surface temperature<br />
is not the operating temperature.<br />
They do not have an accessible bath. Unistats<br />
have a thermally discoupled active<br />
surface (expansion vessel), where by the<br />
surface temperature is not necessarily the<br />
same as the operating temperature.<br />
Process Control<br />
Often cascade control, is when the temperature<br />
control is dictated by the temperature<br />
of the connected external application.<br />
A temperature sensor (often a Pt100 4 wire<br />
configuration with a Lemosa plug) is therefore<br />
required in the external application,<br />
which is connected to the thermostat. The<br />
actual value measured at the external application<br />
is measured and a set point for<br />
the thermostat is continually calculated.<br />
Depending on the operating temperature,<br />
insulation losses and exothermic reactions,<br />
the bath temperature and thus the<br />
flow temperature of the thermostat can be<br />
considerably above or below the set point.<br />
(Always consider the safety limits of the<br />
fluid!!)<br />
Refrigerated Circulator<br />
is a special cooling thermostat which is designed<br />
exclusively as a circulation thermostat.<br />
Circulation chillers have evolved from<br />
thermostats and form a separate range of<br />
units in terms of their type of construction<br />
(DeskTop, Tower), the cooling and pump<br />
capacities. Generally they have no accessible<br />
bath. They are often used as a substitute<br />
for cooling with tap water. (exception:<br />
minichiller)<br />
Refrigerated/Heating<br />
Thermostat<br />
is a thermostat whose working temperature<br />
range is above and below the ambient<br />
temperature, and which can either add heat<br />
to or extract heat from the bath liquid.<br />
Refrigerant<br />
This is used in the refrigeration unit within<br />
the thermostat and extracts the heat from<br />
the thermoregulating liquid, when the<br />
compressed gas expands in the evaporator.<br />
Huber has been completely CFC free<br />
since 1992 and HCFC (e.g. R22) free since<br />
1994. Huber uses only refrigerants which<br />
do no damage to the ozone layer (ODP<br />
Ozone Depletion Potential, ODP=0), and<br />
minimal Global warming potential (GWP,<br />
i.e. Green house effect).<br />
Refrigerated Thermostat<br />
is a thermostat whose working temperature<br />
range is below the ambient temperature<br />
and draws heat from the thermofluid.<br />
Huber refrigerated thermostats are strictly<br />
speaking cooling/heating thermostats,<br />
since their working temperature range is<br />
above and below the ambient temperature.<br />
Heat can be extracted from and added to<br />
the thermofluid.<br />
Standards<br />
The safety requirements for electrical<br />
Iaboratory equipment, and especially also<br />
those for thermostats, have been defined<br />
in European standards EN 61010-1 and EN<br />
61010-2-01 0, replacement for DIN 12879,<br />
among others. The terms and characteristic<br />
of characteristic data is defined in DIN<br />
12876-1 and DIN 12876-2.<br />
Suction Pressure<br />
is the negative pressure of the circulating<br />
pump of a thermostat directly at the pump<br />
suction. lf only one value is given in the<br />

Payment Terms<br />

Delivery<br />
Delivery is always ex-works; we reserve<br />
the right to supply the goods<br />
via a third party.<br />
Transport / Transport Damage-<br />
The transport of goods is always<br />
ordered by the purchaser. Should<br />
loss or damage be incurred during<br />
transport the purchaser must contact<br />
the transport company and request<br />
that the goods are inspected<br />
by a loss adjuster, in advance of an<br />
insurance claim.<br />
Faults<br />
The purchaser must check the<br />
goods immediately on receipt, if<br />

If goods which have been dispatched<br />
on a sale or return basis are<br />
not returned within the agreed<br />
period the goods are then considered<br />
to be sold. If no return date<br />
is issued, it is considered to be 4<br />
weeks. The date is calculated from<br />
the date on the delivery note.<br />
Retention of Title<br />
The delivered goods shall remain<br />
the property of the Peter Huber<br />
Kältemaschinenbau GmbH until<br />
all claims against the purchaser<br />

Redemption in acc. with WEEE /<br />
ElektroG (German law on electric<br />
and electronic devices)<br />
The sales prices are valid exclusive<br />
of the costs for the redemption and<br />
disposal of old devices from users<br />

Upon request, the supplier shall<br />
also organize the redemption and<br />
recycling/disposal of such devices<br />
against compensation of the accrueing<br />
costs, given such devices are<br />

Validity of Contract<br />
If a clause of these conditions is<br />
unworkable, the validity of the<br />
other clauses is unaffected. If one<br />
of the clauses has an unworkable<br />
section, the remainder of the clause<br />
