AWARDS WARDS SEASON SEASON
IN FULL FULL
BLOOM BLOOM
What better way to end the spring 2007 semester than with awards!
The College of Communications topped off this year with a slew of
prestigious honors coming from various department concentrations.
The Daily Titan's advertising student staff attended the CNBAM (College
Newspaper Business Advertising Managers) conference in Portland
picking up six awards. Additionally, The Daily Titan’s own Keith Hansen
and Dan Beam won three 2007 ADDYS from the Orange County Ad
Club. The Daily Titan was ultimately the #2 paper in the nation behind
the University of Kansas.
Tusk magazine received best collegiate design and best overall college
magazine by the WPA (Western Publications Association).
Peter Martinez with Peggy Bockman and
Dean Pullen at the Mark of Excellence
Awards Luncheon.
CNBAM Student Award Recipients (From Left to Right):
Emily Alford, Grant Paulis, Beth Stirnaman, Dan Beam,
Stephanie Birditt, Keith Hansen, Sarah Oak, Kevin
Frederickson, and Kathleen Cisneros.
Tusk writing was also honored in the national Hearst competition and by the
SPJ (Society of Professional Journalists). The SPJ held its annual 2007 Mark of
Excellence luncheon on May 5 during Comm Week where Peter Martinez also
accepted FIRST PLACE on behalf of “On the Edge,” a student produced news
magazine show that won first in the TV Newscast category, beating out USC’s
“Annenberg TV News.”
Public relations students Scott Cobett, Kristine Smeets and Pei Pei Chu (along
with adviser/professor Dean Kazoleas) will compete for the national title in
the PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) National Bateman PR
Campaign Competition from May 17-20. Students will go up against teams
from the University of Georgia and Elon University, all of whom beat out 125
other teams across the nation to be in the top three.
The College of Communications debate team also finished one of its most successful seasons competing in the CEDA and the
National Debate Tournament. At the CEDA tournament, Brenda Montes and Luis Magallon finished as the 4th and 7th
speakers in a field of over 300. Fullerton was the only school with two speakers in the Top 7. Also competing at CEDA were
Fullerton students Josh Pang and Parija Patel, both seniors, as well as Pooja Chopra, Brett Beeler and Caitlin Gray. The
squad is coached by Professors Toni Nielson and Jon Bruschke.
Although the AAF Team didn’t win the regional, it finished 4th among ten campus teams from Southern California. The
competition was tough, and the voting by judges was very tight among the top four teams.
And last, but not certainly least, film students Marie Sanyas, Brett Meyer, Fahmi Farahat, Michel Makins, Michael
Castaneda, Andy Chinn, Sean Nietschmann, Neil Sakatani, and Becky Baumgartner (see article on page 3) showcased
their short films at the Newport Beach Festival that were held in April.
The Power of Hope, Faith, & Film
Sometimes the forces of fate are as unpredictable as the vast ocean itself. When
teenager Bethany Hamilton lost her arm in a freak shark attack, it seemed her
dreams of becoming a pro surfer were lost. Through her determination, hope, and
faith, Hamilton has become an inspirational symbol of hope and is also the subject
of CSUF alumna BECKY BAUMGARTNER
AUMGARTNER new short documentary Heart of a Soul Surfer.
ECKY B
“As a fellow surfer and friend of hers, I felt compelled to
share her perspective through this documentary,” says
director/producer Baumgartner who spent the last two
years working on the project.
She got the idea of chronicling Hamilton’s road to recovery
while enrolled in RTVF 427 - DOCUMENTARY
DOCUMENTARY
PRODUCTION PRODUCTION
with
PROFESSOR ROFESSOR WARD WARD.
The course provided her the training to
pursue the project further where she says, “I learned a lot as
I went and it was a refreshing experience that gave me a
good idea of how things work as a filmmaker.”
“The documentary definitely had its challenges,” explains
Baumgartner. Getting rights to footage and licensed music
were all part of the careful production although
Baumgartner cites Hamilton as her most important source of
inspiration who “challenges her everyday.”
Heart of a Soul Surfer had its Orange County premiere at the NEWPORT EWPORT BEACH BEACH
FILM
FESTIVAL FESTIVAL
featured in both the Action
Sports Shorts and Teen, Tween Short categories. Bethany Hamilton’s brother, Noah, was also at hand where he watched
the short documentary for the first time in a theater setting.
“It’s so much stronger on the big screen. It was so clean and well done. It’s hard to make something only 30 minutes, but
[Baumgartner] put it together really well ,” says Noah Hamilton who learned a lot during production as well. His sister’s
story is something he believes should be “given away” to audiences enhanced by the film’s ability “to bring out good
emotions while also being entertained.”
The film received a positive reception during the Action Sports Shorts screening where the audience eagerly clapped
during the end credits. “It’s such a rewarding experience when people come up to and say that the film really changed
their life,” says Baumgartner who, after the screening, engaged in a Q&A session with the audience. Hamilton’s story, she
explains, shows that “there is always something more [after a tragedy, like Hamilton’s] that can be true for all of us if were
open to it.”
“I hope the audiences come away from the film with the hope and courage that will change their life for the better. I think
that whatever it is that they are going through in their own lives, they will walk away encouraged, inspired to press on, or
be challenged to take steps of faith…” adds Baumgartner.
Currently, Baumgartner is in pre-development for Bethany Hamilton's feature film where she will serve as a producer.
ACTOR CTOR GOES GOES
BACK BACK
TO SCHOOL SCHOOL
Although Kevin Costner is a
big-time movie star, he has not
forgotten his CSUF roots. In a
rare appearance by the actor, a
packed PA Theatre crowd
participated in a informal talk where Costner covered
everything from his entertainment career and his own personal
journey to stardom. Selected students from Communications,
Radio/TV/Film, and Business (where Costner received his BA)
departments were invited to this exclusive event.
Some fortunate guests were also treated to a free,
advanced screening of Costner’s new film Mr. Brooks held in the
Titan Theatre. The film is quite a departure for the actor where
he plays a loving family man with a dark side in this new
psychological thriller that comes out in June 2007.
