ORC ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND
DEVELOPMENTS IN 2010 /11
This year, the Overseas Resource Center continued to
increase the quality of scholarship outreach sessions,
which consequently increased the number of applicants
and award recipients. One surprise was the record number
of Fulbright candidates this year with 93 applications
submitted. The highest number in the past was 87
applicants. Over the course of the year, there was also
more collaboration among campus partners including
Bing Overseas Studies Programs (BOSP) and Career
Development Center (CDC) through the annual Away from
Stanford Opportunities Fair as well as with the Haas Center
for Public Policy through the Haas Year of Service Fair. We
also worked with Residence Halls and Community Centers
where we conducted scholarship information sessions.
In addition, meetings and joint scholarship information
sessions were held with Undergraduate Advising and
Research to promote both overseas and domestic awards
across campus.
ORC Personnel
Throughout the academic year, Tamara Cogan continued
as the main Front Desk Coordinator whose primary role
is to take passport photos, process ISIC cards as well as
work on projects and perform a number of administrative
duties. Kristin Costigan was also instrumental during the
busy Fall 2010 scholarship season. Kristin left the ORC
in February 2011 to complete her graduate studies and
to go on maternity leave. From September 2010 to May
2011, we welcomed Kate McKinney, our graduate student
intern from the School of Education Policy, Organization,
Leadership Studies Graduate who helped us with
scholarships and a large survey as described below. Kate’s
internship consisted of three main areas: Fall quarter:
To learn to develop, collect, and analyze survey data;
Winter: To develop own advising skills; Spring: To develop
outreach plans and outreach skills.

We also hired Adrian Bonifacio a work-study student to assist
with passport photos one afternoon per week and other student
workers, Monica Climaco and Yoon-Jung Lee who helped us
occasionally with passport photos especially during the rush
period. In early July, thanks to the IDEA Grant funding we hired
Camira Powell for our short-term outreach video project. In mid-
August, Mikaela Hinds join our team to help during our busy
scholarship season for 2011-2012.
Photos and ISIC
Photograph and International Student Identification Card (ISIC)
services continue to be scheduled for Monday-Friday, 1-5pm.
We have extended the photo taking service from 11am-5pm
during the third week of each quarter as it coincides with the
BOSP study abroad program deadlines. We increased the Front
Desk coverage during these peak times to handle the student
rush for photos. In January 2011, the ORC purchased a new Sony
UPX-C300 instant passport photo camera and digital printing
system. In October 2010 the ORC bought a Brother electronic LCD
display typewriter to process ISIC cards as the previous typewriter
had irreparable issues with several of the keys. The need for the
typewriter replacement was determined because the ISIC covering
materials are not suitable for high heat laser printers that had been
attempted previously. At this time, we are still unable to create
digital photos as it would be too costly to purchase the equipment
for this service. Nonetheless, the new camera does facilitate the
image processing quality and time.
Resource Library
The ORC library is still used regularly by students who consult
the binders of successful essays written by Stanford scholarship
recipients. The hours are Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm.
