Our Norwegian colleagues Sven Löffeler and Karol Axcrona have done an amazing job with NUFbulletinen
during the past two years. And now the “relay baton” is carried on by Sweden for the
next two years to come. We regret not having had the opportunity to meet Sven and Karol, but we
hope to be able to do that at the NUF-congress in Sandefjord.
We understand, in being editors,
we take on a great responsibility
to be flexible, wellinformed,
active and productive and even
sometimes act as “annoying reminders”.
We would like to apologize to our readers
for the delay with the Bulletinen and we
hope that you will find this edition as interesting
as always.
We start by introducing ourselves. My
name is Marianna Hrebenyuk and I am a
resident in urology at the Karolinska University
Hospital in Stockholm. I am at the
end of my second year and I find urology
ever more fascinating. My interest in urology
started when I was a medical student
and discovered that as an urologist you
meet a great variety of patients, old and
young, male or female, you perform practical
procedures at the out-patient clinic as
well as in the operating theater. Urological
surgery is varied, spanning across minimal
out-patient procedures, reconstructive,
transurethral, open, laparoscopic and
robotic surgery. The urologic patients are
the most groovy and grateful (or at least
the majority of them). And urologists are
competent and hard-working people but
still seem relaxed, enjoying life with a good
sense of humor.
My naMe is Anders Lideståhl and like
Marianna I also work as an urologist at the
Karolinska University Hospital. My interest
in urology, urological oncology and palliative
medicine started when I took a year
off from medical school to work as a nurse
assistant at a hospice. During that year I
met dozens of men with end stage prostatic
cancer and I was intrigued by the patients’
almost stoic attitude towards their suffering
as well as by the biology of the disease itself.
I decided on a career in uro-oncology and
have since become a specialist in oncology
and urology as well.
In this issue you will be able to enjoy
some really interesting articles about
TURP, PSA-screening, future treatments
of prostate cancer and more. We also present
exciting stories by NUF Travel Grant
recipients (information about NUF Travel
Grant you will find on the home page of
NUF). Professor Mirja Ruutu passed away
this year and we understand that she was a
great urologist and colleague. We are grateful
to Jens Thorup Andersen and Steen
Walter for their obituary to honor professor
Ruutu. As previously we give you the
SPCG-corner with the latest news about
prostate cancer. Our colleagues from the
LUTD-group celebrate 5 active years and
inform us about their future work and education.
We hoPe you will enjoy reading our first
issue of NUF-bulletinen and we wish you
all a nice summer. The NUF-congress is a
perfect closure of the summer and we hope
that many of you will have the opportunity
to attend the congress. If not you will have
plenty more opportunities to attend other
events, please check our calendar.
