several colleagues from my department
recommended me to apply for a nuf
travel grant, so i did, and i was granted
one.
Iarrived in Oslo one Sunday in March
2013. It was a beautiful day. Full of
expectations I took the T‐bane (Oslo
metro) to Holmenkollen, the highest peak
in Oslo. Here I found ‘Lysebu’, my home
for the next five days. ”Oppe i lyset inden
i Skogen” they write and so it is. A wonderful
brown wooden house bought by the
Norwegian people as a present in appreciation
to the Danish people for their food aid
during World War II. Young Danes visiting
Oslo for academic purposes can reside
here at a subsidised rate.
My goal for the attaChMent was to
witness reconstructive urological surgery
and to gain a better understanding of neurogenic
bladder dysfunction. Professor
Steen Walter, Odense Universitetshospital,
and senior consultant Alexander Schultz,
Rikshospitalet Oslo, kindly arranged my
stay.
Alexander Schultz arranged a very interesting
programme for the week.
The University Hospital in Oslo consists
of four different hospitals: Rikshospitalet,
Radiumhospitalet, Ullevål Hospital and
Aker Hospital. The Department of Urology
is spread over three of these hospitals with
activity at Rikshospitalet (reconstructive
and neuro-urology), Radiumhospitalet
(uro‐oncology) and Aker Hospital (general
urology including, stones, LUTS, urooncology,
acute urology).
The Urology section at Rikshospitalet
is manned by three consultants and two
residents. It is also administratively included
in the surgical clinic at Rikshospitalet
which is comprised of the urology, upper
gastro‐intestinal, transplantation and
paediatric surgical units. Residents are
expected to cover all four units when on
call. Urology is a surgical sub-speciality in
Norway.
