The NUF Travel Grant
Visit at Haukeland University Hospital
in Bergen, Norway
by Mette Christine Zoffmann, Resident in Urology, Odense University Hospital, Denmark
The scenic view from Mt. Ulriken.
in March 2012, i had the pleasant experience to go on a study
visit to the department of urology at haukeland university
hospital in bergen.
Iam a resident of urology, working at Odense University Hospital.
I chose to visit Haukeland University Hospital because
of my great interest in laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery.
At the time of my visit, the urological robot-assisted operations
at Odense University Hospital were only about to start.
Professor Steen Walter, Odense University Hospital and
Christian Beisland, Norway arranged the visit, and I was lucky
to receive the NUF Travel Grant.
I arrived by plane to the beautiful city of Bergen. The weather
presented the city from its most admirable side. Bergen is sur-
rounded by seven mountains and the fiord, and is full of history
and charm. I enjoyed a walk along Bryggen; the old Hanseatic
wharf, which has got a place on UNESCO´s World heritage List,
and took a nice trip to the top of Mt. Ulriken by cable lift, in order
to see the breath-taking panoramic view of the city and the ocean.
Haukeland University Hospital covers quite a large area with
a population of 1 000 000 citizens in the region and 300 000 citizens
in the local area.
The Department of Urology at Haukeland University Hospital
has nine consultant urologists and four residents. In addition
there are two professors and one associate professor.
Since 2009 it has been a centre of robotic surgery. The robot-
assisted radical prostatectomy (RALP) operations are the primary
operations, but other surgical procedures are also done
