Kansei Engineering is well known throughout the world as<br />
an erg<strong>on</strong>omic new product development technology. Kansei<br />
is a Japanese term which implies psychological feeling <strong>and</strong><br />
needs in mind. Kansei Engineering means an erg<strong>on</strong>omic<br />
human-oriented technology of developing a new product<br />
which a customers deeply want to have <strong>and</strong> structuring<br />
productive organizati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Until today, the Kansei Engineering has been applied to the<br />
industries of automobile, home electric appliance,<br />
c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> machine, costume, cosmetic as well as<br />
housing. It has prevailed in the world from domestic product<br />
design to civil engineering product <strong>and</strong> even urban design.<br />
The Kansei Engineering<br />
is able to grasp the<br />
c<strong>on</strong>sumers’ kansei, to<br />
analyze the kansei using<br />
statistical methods, <strong>and</strong><br />
to transfer the analyzed<br />
data to the design<br />
domain.<br />

Dr Mitsuo Nagamachi is the<br />
founder of Kansei Engineering<br />
around in 1970 in Hiroshima,<br />
Japan. He has engaged in the<br />
development of the Kansei<br />
Engineering for over 35 years<br />
<strong>and</strong> developed a lot of the<br />
Kansei products <strong>and</strong> the Kansei<br />
Engineering methods. He has<br />
undertaken c<strong>on</strong>sulting activities<br />
for Nissan, Toyota, H<strong>on</strong>da,<br />
Volvo, Nipp<strong>on</strong> Steel, Fuji, <strong>and</strong><br />
Samsung, am<strong>on</strong>g others.<br />
Dr Nagamachi was born in Kobe,<br />
Japan, in 1936. He has<br />
graduated from the Psychology<br />
Department of Hiroshima<br />
University in 1963. Thereafter,<br />
he studied Medicine <strong>and</strong><br />
Engineering. He has been a<br />
Professor in the Engineering<br />
School, Hiroshima University.<br />
His specialty is Statistical <strong>Quality</strong><br />
C<strong>on</strong>trol, Manufacturing System,<br />
Robotics, <strong>and</strong> Safety<br />
Engineering. His main research<br />
fields are Biomedical<br />
Engineering <strong>and</strong> Biological<br />
material Studies, Intelligent<br />
Mechanics / Mechanical System<br />
<strong>and</strong> Measurement Engineering.<br />
Today, Dr Nagamachi is Guest<br />
Professor in Kyushu University,<br />
Japan.
