Kansei Engineering is well known throughout the world as
an ergonomic new product development technology. Kansei
is a Japanese term which implies psychological feeling and
needs in mind. Kansei Engineering means an ergonomic
human-oriented technology of developing a new product
which a customers deeply want to have and structuring
productive organization.
Until today, the Kansei Engineering has been applied to the
industries of automobile, home electric appliance,
construction machine, costume, cosmetic as well as
housing. It has prevailed in the world from domestic product
design to civil engineering product and even urban design.
The Kansei Engineering
is able to grasp the
consumers’ kansei, to
analyze the kansei using
statistical methods, and
to transfer the analyzed
data to the design
domain.

Dr Mitsuo Nagamachi is the
founder of Kansei Engineering
around in 1970 in Hiroshima,
Japan. He has engaged in the
development of the Kansei
Engineering for over 35 years
and developed a lot of the
Kansei products and the Kansei
Engineering methods. He has
undertaken consulting activities
for Nissan, Toyota, Honda,
Volvo, Nippon Steel, Fuji, and
Samsung, among others.
Dr Nagamachi was born in Kobe,
Japan, in 1936. He has
graduated from the Psychology
Department of Hiroshima
University in 1963. Thereafter,
he studied Medicine and
Engineering. He has been a
Professor in the Engineering
School, Hiroshima University.
His specialty is Statistical Quality
Control, Manufacturing System,
Robotics, and Safety
Engineering. His main research
fields are Biomedical
Engineering and Biological
material Studies, Intelligent
Mechanics / Mechanical System
and Measurement Engineering.
Today, Dr Nagamachi is Guest
Professor in Kyushu University,
Japan.
