EVER-ART’-DESIGN CONTINUES THE DIGITAL EVOLUTION
WITH NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND SERVICES
Ever-Art’-Design, of Sint Genesius-Rode, Belgium, exemplifies
the business transformation that small companies can achieve
by leveraging digital technologies.
When Willy Everaerts started carrying out digital pre-press
work as a side-job in 1988, he recognized an opportunity,
even though he could not see two decades ahead.
Today, Ever-Art’-Design employs 14 people and offers
commercial digital printing on an HP Indigo 7000 Digital
Press and wide format printing on a new HP Scitex FB500
Printer. The company offers web-to-print solutions for photospecialty
products and business cards with comprehensive
in-house finishing capabilities. Further positioning and
differentiating itself in the marketplace, Ever-Art’-Design also
offers conventional printing, primarily for stationery and
forms. In addition, it is able to print with white ink on three of
its output devices, the two HP machines and a second wide
format inkjet device.
Responding to market opportunities
Digital pre-press became Everaerts’s full-time business in
1991 and in one year he had employed three people and
added a number of services.
“We added A3/B-sized color scanning services as part of
the prepress offering and also produced presentations and
signage using transfer lettering,” Everaerts explains. “By
the end of the 1990s, we had grown to eight people and
expanded into a new building.”
The end of the 1990s marked Ever-Art’-Design’s initial step
into digital printing with the acquisition of a dry tonerbased
color printer. Everaerts also seized the opportunity to
acquire a redundant in-house printing facility with three small
conventional presses, three employees and a building.
In 2003, the installation of an HP Indigo Press 1000 was the
company’s first big step into commercial digital printing.
“This press proved that the quality of digital was very good
and it enabled fast turnaround of high-quality, high-value
print,” Everaerts says.
The company was able to use its combination of conventional
and digital technologies to build the business further while
also developing its finishing capabilities and wide format
business with the installation of an inkjet plotter for color
proofs and large format printing. Subsequently, an HP
Designjet Z6100 Printer was added.
“This was our first move into large format digital production,
but followed logically from our experience with manually
produced signage,” Everaerts explains. “We began printing
posters, banners and displays on various substrates
including canvas.”
This moved the company into traditional screen printing
territory which continued in parallel to the
commercial print work.

CHALLENGE
•Adapt to changing market
conditions
•Offer an expanding range
of services
•Keep the company on a
growth path
When the next generation of digital presses was launched
in 2006, Everaerts invested in an HP Indigo press 5000
– the first in Belgium and as the business grew, as did the
relationship with HP, and in 2008, the company installed the
first HP Indigo 7000 Digital Press in Belgium.
On the wide format side, Everaerts has enjoyed discovering
the full potential of his HP Scitex FB500 Printer. A device
using UV-curable ink, the HP Scitex FB500 is a flat-bed
printer that can image virtually any substrate up to 48 x 64in
(122 x 160cm) and 2.5in (64mm) thick. The six color printer
has a number of options including white ink, roll-to-roll and
folding tables for handling larger substrates.
“We have tried printing on a wide range of substrates
from canvas and board, cork, floor materials to less
conventional ones like lavatory seats and laptop computers,”
Everaerts says.
A mixed customer base
At its start, Ever-Art’-Design was dependent on a small
number of large companies. However, it recognized the
danger of this and worked hard to build a diversified
market. Today, customers are primarily business-to-business
accounts from a range of sectors including automotive,
pharmaceuticals, electronics, plumbing suppliers,
marketing agencies and packaging companies, as well
as individual consumers.
Taking advantage of the automated workflow and end-to-end
production solutions available for HP Indigo presses, Ever
Art’-Design works with two companies that operate interfaces
for web-to-print production of business cards and photospecialty
products.
“The process is automated from ordering through to
packaging, sealing and labeling,” says Everaerts. “It has
enabled us to achieve production levels of more than 15,000
jobs during a two-month period. Jobs included printing
SOLUTION
•Continuous investment in digital
technologies, including web-toprint
•HP Indigo 7000 Digital Press (the
latest of three HP Indigo presses)
•HP Indigo and Scitex white inks
•HP Designjet Z6100 Printer
•HP Scitex FB500 Printer
RESULTS
• Continued growth
•Record production levels
•Entry into new markets
• Production differentiation
and finishing photobooks, greetings cards, calendars and
notebooks for customers throughout Europe.”
While most customers come from the greater Brussels area,
the Internet means everywhere is local and Ever-Art’-Design
has received orders from as far away as New Zealand.
“Life today is directed by the Internet,” Everaerts says. “We’ve
seen huge changes in the printing industry with many paper
jobs going, but other new jobs coming in. I believe that the
future of the graphic arts is with digital. We’re going way
beyond paper, and digital technologies relating to print are
changing every day.”
As an example, Everaerts cites the way young people use
the web.
“They don’t use telephone directories any more, and the day
will come when they are no longer printed,” he continues.
“They use mobile phones and email – and there are no
printed directories at all for them.
“The same is true of catalogues. The number of thick
annual catalogues is declining steadily, but there are new
opportunities for smaller, personalized catalogues or more
frequent mailers to deliver targeted and focused promotional
materials,” Everaerts concludes. “The Internet also means
that we now shop all over the world, which makes marketing
activities more challenging.”
Willy Everaerts is enthusiastic about the future. He has seen
business models change since he first started Ever-Art’
Design, but some things have remained the same:
“Craftsmanship, quality, service, price and delivering goods
on time remain fundamental elements of a good business,”
he concludes. “HP has been a good partner for us in helping
us, and I believe we have a great future working with them in
continuing to develop our business.”
“In the first six weeks the HP Scitex FB500 Printer was operational we sold more
than €25,000 worth of jobs. These were all new types of jobs that we would
not have had before.”
