THE MOST IMPORTANT TECHNOLOGY
ON THE ROAD ISN’T YOUR CAR. IT’S
WHAT’S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES.
As a constantly evolving mix of curves, conditions and scenery, the road is a demanding
medium by any measure. Which is why Serengeti ® develops sunglasses with an equally
dynamic approach, incorporating state-of-the-art technologies, intelligent refinements and
unparalleled attention to detail into every pair. In fact, all Serengeti sunglasses exceed
government and commercial standards, blocking out virtually 100% of UVA and UVB rays,
while reducing stress on your eyes.
PHOTOCHROMIC
The ability to adapt to your surroundings, instantly.
Just like with touring, the ability to adapt to your new environment is
a valuable asset to any and every driver. Our photochromic technology
works by embedding molecules within the lens, which are designed to
constantly adjust to changing light conditions, so your eyes are free
to stay focused on the road ahead.
SPECTRAL CONTROL ®
Control is the operative word here.
By filtering out specific colors within the visible light spectrum,
Spectral Control technology gives you stunning, high-definition contrast and
color enhancement. This essentially gives your eyes control over the light,
resulting in crisper vision and amazingly clear images, while blocking out
most blue light for less eye fatigue.
POLARIZATION
Because glare is the enemy of clarity.
It may be beautiful scenery, but if light is bouncing around and being
reflected off myriad surfaces, you’re not going to see it at its best.
That’s why our polarization technology is specially designed to
reduce as much glare as possible, giving the wearer unsurpassed
clarity and comfort.
new Polar PhD
Evolved from the proven NXT ® lens platform, Serengeti’s ® exclusive new Polar PhD lens combines the latest in polarization
and photochromic lens technologies with our proprietary Spectral Control ® technology. And by engineering the polarization
layer into the back of the lens, we’ve managed to avoid the delamination and deterioration inherent with traditional film-based
polarization. This advanced technology provides 98% polarization efficiency while automatically lightening and darkening to
suit the conditions, giving the user years of uncompromised performance.
555nm ®
Ideal for bright light conditions, the 555nm lens
manages yellow and green light transmissions
to cool and relax the eyes. The light silver mirror
coating further reduces eye strain by acting as
a protective shield against glare. Available in
Piers, Fontana,
In Italy, craftsmanship is everything. Staying true to its Italian
roots, Serengeti ® embodies that centuries-old dedication to
craftsmanship and artistry, while using the latest in high-tech
advancements. This devotion is apparent in every part of the
manufacturing process, from the cutting-edge temple hinge
designs to the proprietary hydrogen firing utilized during the
manufacturing of Serengeti’s lenses.
By hydrogen firing lens blanks in a Lehr
furnace, Serengeti lenses are embedded
with photochromic properties, ensuring
optimized light transmission performance
for the life of the lenses.
Hydrogen firing at 1,000˚ F activates the
Spectral Control ® properties of the glass,
permanently embedding the technology
into each lens. This prevents the technology
from wearing off over time.
Serengeti lenses are chemically treated so
they can hold up to extreme shatter-resistant
standards, and we test for that with a drop
ball test that exceeds industry norms.
FRAME TYPES
Serengeti frames are every bit as engineered as the
lenses. After all, the frames are what hold everything
together — and a big part of why Serengeti sunglasses
look so good and feel so comfortable.
NYLON
Using only the highest quality injected nylon for superior
durability, these frames have the added benefit of being
exceptionally light, flexible and comfortable — not to mention
highly fashionable.
TITANIuM
Elementally speaking, titanium has it all. These frames are
not only ultra-lightweight yet super strong, but also designed
to automatically adjust to the contours of your head for
long-lasting comfort.
WIRE-FLEx
Designed to bend to the contours of your face, the Wire-Flex
frames feature a highly flexible and strong blend of nickel,
silver and stainless steel. The result is a fit that feels truly
customized. Some Wire-Flex frames are available with
leather-like Tannery options.
S-FLEx
The revolutionary S-Flex design employs a mix of monel and
beta titanium metals for a supremely durable, lightweight
frame. It is also engineered with the “S” shaped temple design,
providing a snug fit and unparalleled comfort. Some S-Flex
frames are available with leather-like Tannery options.

JaMes Denton
destined to get away from it all
by elliott allen
With an unassuming stroll, he slides
into view and plunks down in front
of a big oak table. He’s done all this
before, the questions, the small talk,
the cameras. It’s another day of
looking good and playing the part
for James Denton. He’s so at ease
you half expect him to kick his feet
up on the table.
We’re in Los Angeles on a shoot for
Serengeti ® DENTON
, maker of the world’s finest
driving sunglass. After a couple
of warm-up questions, we drift into
a discussion about the open road,
Montana, cars, and motorcycles,
and it becomes clear that
Serengeti sunglasses and James
are a good match. “My Serengeti’s
make everything on the road so
crisp and vibrant. They’re perfect
for a guy like me.” He wears them
well, too, as he’s currently styling
the retro-inspired Vasio.
While his gig as Mike Delfino, the
hunky, somewhat mysterious plumber
on Desperate Housewives, keeps
him close to LA most of the year,
you can tell he relishes adventure
and the call of the road.
Photographed by: GREG GORMAN
Styled by: LINDA MEDVENE
Sunglass: SERENGETI VASIO
With an intriguing persona that’s
somehow both laid-back and
restless, James talked about the
importance of clearing his head,
and the simple joys of spending
time in Montana, “the fourth-largest
state with the fourth-smallest
population,” as he put it. There,
he has a small ranch (location
undisclosed, of course). Choosing
to drive from LA rather than fly, he
uses that time to do some thinking
and bond with his wife and two
young children, Shepherd (6)
and Malin (4). This road-induced
acclimation process helps to get
him in the Montana mindset, so
that once there, he’s ready to
do it all: hiking, camping and
fishing — as well as some much
deserved porch-chilling.
There’s one Montana adventure,
however, James can’t seem to get
enough of. Sitting side by side in his
garage await two, gleaming electric
motorcycles. Just as powerful as their
throaty, fuel-consuming brethren,
these bikes truly fly. But unlike most
bikes, these are totally silent, creating
a surreal experience for James and
one other lucky rider, as they float
across the empty mountainous
backroads with nothing but the
whoosh of air in their ears. As we talk,
James’ eyes glaze a bit and you can
see he’s gone. He’s in Montana.
He snaps out of it when he’s asked
about other ways in which he gets
away. In Australia, he once spent two
weeks driving from Alice Springs
to Cairns in the far north. It was here
that he came to truly appreciate the
protective qualities of his Serengeti’s.
“The glare was unrelenting, yet it
was never a problem. They were so
comfortable I actually forgot I was
“My Serengeti’s make
everything on the road so
crisp and vibrant. They’re
perfect for a guy like me.”
wearing sunglasses.” Slowly working
his way through the red center, as
he called it, he encountered all the
geographic oddities and crusty
characters of the interior. At one
point he picked up a hitchhiker
who turned out to be a camel
musterer. If you don’t know what
a camel musterer is, c’mon mate.
It’s a person who tracks down
rogue camels, of course. James’
car reeked of camel the rest
of the trip.
Other less-than-plush adventures
include a backpacking excursion
through Ireland, where he cozied
up with colorful locals for beers and
soaked up the verdant countryside.
He’s also journeyed across the U.S.
a handful of times, north–south and
east–west. All this road tripping and
vagabonding seems to inspire him,
giving him fodder for acting while
freeing his mind from the mental
rut so many actors and musicians
experience when in LA.
So next time you’re in Montana,
keep your eyes peeled for a couple
of phantom bikers. Or, if you’re in a
roadside diner somewhere outside
Amarillo, look around. If the guy
next to you is wearing Serengeti
sunglasses, eating apple pie and
damn good looking, say hi. It just
might be James Denton, recharging
his batteries, living the life.
Alain’s take
on Italy
Alain Prost’s tenure on Italy’s
prestigious Ferrari F1 team
proved to be one of the most
memorable in his illustrious
racing career.
As lead driver, Alain continually
pushed the limits of himself,
his teammates and the cars.
Nicknamed “The Professor,”
Alain shunned training that
relied on feel and gut instincts,
relying instead on shrewd
calculations, discipline and
knowing every square millimeter
of your car. Between 1990 and
1991, Alain won four times in
Italy at both Monza and Imola.
Part of this success could be
attributed to Alain’s affinity for
the storied Ferrari team, as well
as Italy itself. Long known for
its meticulous craftsmanship
and sense of pride, the country
boasts the kind of philosophy
that’s directly in line with Alain’s.
A glimpse behind the lens
By Elliott Allen
36
It’s not exactly something you’d ponder off the top off your head, not for
most people at least. But when you’re on a photo shoot with the highly
accomplished Greg Gorman, who happens to be shooting for Serengeti ®
sunglasses, well then, perhaps it’s not so odd to ask the question: What
do good camera lenses and good sunglass lenses have in common?
Renowned for his illuminating celebrity portraiture, Greg has been behind
the lens for more than four decades, having shot countless stars, including
such polar personalities as Jimi Hendrix and Robert De Niro. As you might
expect, he possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of lens technology and
light, as well as pretty much anything else you might want to talk about...wine,
music, travel. With Greg, it’s all seamlessly woven into the conversation.
With all that experience, quality is something Greg can recognize at a
glance. And he sees it in his own pair of Serengeti sunglasses. “They have
an exceptionally well-crafted lens to match their refined frames.” Amazingly,
this philosophy of comprehensive quality is not something all sunglass
manufacturers adhere to, including some
fairly high-end companies. To punctuate that
point, Greg disparagingly notes how some
photographers will essentially do the same thing,
putting a $20 filter over a $1,000 lens. “It just
doesn’t make sense–not with cameras, not for
sunglasses.” You can tell it’s a peeve of his.
He’s also noticed how well the photochromic
technology in his Serengeti lenses accommodate
varying light conditions, which is also a hallmark
of a good camera lens. To make his point, Greg
goes off on an articulate tangent about “the
golden light of Tuscany” and his favorite camera
lens for Italy, the 81b Yellow, while complimenting
Serengeti for its vast array of superior lenses.
He wears his Serengeti’s on the road and can back up how they make the
sun-swathed landscape of his native California more crisp and vibrant.
For a man who’s been shooting since the late 60s, you might think Greg
would shun the latest digital camera technology. You’d be wrong. Instead, he’s
thoroughly embraced the new digital format, while some of his contemporaries
have been much more tepid about the prospect. As far as sunglasses go,
a similar leap has taken place. Advances in computer technology have made
it possible to generate incredibly precise tolerances in the lens manufacturing
process. This has yielded stronger, lighter lenses with enhanced clarity, all of
which are embodied in Serengeti’s new Polar PhD lens.
Greg sees a parallel here, too, acknowledging that digital camera lenses are
advancing so quickly that he’s consistently astonished by their clarity and
capabilities. “Lens technology is advancing at a seemingly exponential rate,”
he energetically states, revealing an unabashed excitement about all the
possibilities that lie ahead. With that thought, it seems the future is, indeed,
where it’s at, and for one moment in time, a world-famous photographer and
the world’s finest driving sunglass are in total synchronicity.
Taking direction from
photographer Greg
Gorman, James
Denton strikes a profile
pose in the Serengeti ®
Larino, showcasing
their aggressive wrap.
Opposite: Denton
and Gorman enjoy
a glass of wine after
the photo shoot.

Italy’s five most
scenic drives
From the chic cities in the north and the glamour of the Riviera, to
Tuscany’s wine region and the rustic charm of the south, there’s very
little in Italy that isn’t scenic. Narrowing it down to five drives was
no easy task. This list represents a good cross section of the kinds
of things that lure over 35 million visitors a year to this charming,
boot-shaped country. Doing just one of these drives would make
for an unforgettable experience. All five, and there’s a very good
chance you might not want to ever leave.
SS7 Via Appia
Commissioned by Censor Appius Caecus in 312 BC, the
Appian Way is one of the oldest and most well-known
of the surviving Roman roads. The road stretches
from the heart of Rome to the seaport of Brindisi over
350 miles to the southeast. Almost like a Route 66 of
the ancient world, the Via Appia supplies history and
unexpected charm around every turn. Complementing
the journey, the Vasio with the Drivers lens exudes a
timeless quality all its own.
SS1 Via Aurelia
As you wind your way along the rocky coast, you’ll
soak up all that the Italian Riviera has to offer. The
gleaming blue sea, terraced gardens, swank hotels
and cliff-hugging villages are just a few of the sights
that will glamorize your senses. Having inspired
countless car-chase scenes in movies, Via Aurelia’s
narrow path will most likely inspire you to play it
cautiously. Likewise, the Serengeti ® Lamone with
its 555nm ® polarized lens is a stylish way to play
it safe with your eyes.
SS163 Strada Amalfi
This 45-mile stretch of road allows you to experience
the classic sights, smells and overall beauty of the
southern Italian coast. Beware, however, it’s not for
the faint of heart. Perched along the sheer coastal
cliffs between Amalfi and Sorrento, the drive can be
hair-raising, especially considering there’s a good bit
of traffic and usually only a short stone wall separating
you from your maker. Stopping off on one of the many
small seaside towns, such as Arienzo, will help break
up the tension. The Presa with its Polar PhD CPG
lens will help you take it all in with absolute clarity.
SS222 Strada Chiantigiana
As the name implies, this road ambles through
the rolling vineyards of Tuscany’s Chianti region.
This charming backroad connects Florence and
Siena, making it ideal for a leisurely day trip. Tour
the wineries, stop for a meal and, if a little side road
beckons, don’t hesitate to wander off course. The
Bianca with the Drivers ® polarized lens will easily
adjust to Chianti’s changing scenery while giving
you the style to mingle in any social scene you
38 39
happen upon.
SS48 Grande Strada delle Dolomiti
Nestled in the far north of Italy, this road snakes
through the heart of the jagged Dolomite mountains.
It provides unencumbered and breathtaking views
of the surrounding mountains, partially due to the fact
the roadway is often right on the edge of some very
precipitous drops. Brush up on your German, as it’s
the primary language spoken here. The thin air and
harsh glare of this rugged terrain is the ideal match
for Serengeti’s Matteo with its Drivers polarized lens.

CHOICES, ALL OF THEM SUPERIOR
The Serengeti Eyewear National Sun RX program offers a wide range of custom choices, from single vision to progressive lenses,
with the same high level of craftsmanship and technology that Serengeti is renowned for.
ONLY THE FINEST TECHNOLOGY
Just like our plano sunglasses, we employ only the very best polarization, photochromic and Spectral Control ® technologies.
Serengeti partners with Carl Zeiss Vision ® , an industry leader in RX lens development and processing, to offer authentic Serengeti
glass RX lenses and the new Polar PhD lens.
Serengeti Polar PhD RX lenses, available in polarized and non-polarized, utilize a new material tinting and casting process called
“confined tint.” Unlike other tinted photochromic lenses, this patent-pending technology allows the placement of the photochromic dyes
in the front surface of the semi-finished lens. The polarized film is positioned closer to the front surface of the lens, providing a center
thickness of just 1.4mm, thinner than any other prescription polarized lens on the market.
Serengeti NXT ® PhD RX lenses are made with Trivex ® material and provide many advantages. They are the fastest performing photochromic
sun lenses on the market. Their impact resistance, light weight and Abbe value of 45 make them perfect for any activity — driving, walking,
biking, golfing, sailing, hiking.
Carl Zeiss Vision is the exclusive supplier of Serengeti RX lenses. Carl Zeiss Vision uses a patented platform of customized
progressive lenses and proprietary single vision processing. The results are clear — optical superiority, customizable frame
and lens options, UV protection, and authenticity.
