presidential thoughts Rick Gonçalves, President
As we get geared up for
all the driving events
this year, excitement
builds. Drivers are
getting their cars out
of winter mothballs in
a variety of ways that I
described in last month’s article. Some of
the daily driver cars are getting their snow
tires replaced with street tires and their
race tires and rims checked for wear and/
or replacement. Some drivers had their
cars pre-teched this last week. Others
may wait for the first track event, Speed
Fever IV, to have their cars pre-teched at
the track. Racers will have their dedicated
track cars ready to go, either by working
on them all through the winter, or by taking
them to their favorite shop. Nonetheless,
a lot of activity is being generated by track
drivers. But track drivers only account for
maybe a quarter of our total membership,
which, right now, is around 2200 people.
So, what are the rest of you 1650 or
so members going to do, if you don’t drive
your car on the track?
Most of you get the newsletter, and
about half of you get the email blasts,
so, keep an eye out! There are a lot of
activities for you, even if you are not a
track junkie.
Take membership meetings, for
example. These are great venues that
happen usually around the first Thursday
of the month in the evening. They typically
take place at a mechanic’s shop, a
dealership, or even at a theater for movie
night. These meetings are great for a
little education about our cars, how to
detail them, how to work on the brakes, or
even how to get a racecar built. Mostly,
however, these venues are best for their
camaraderie—a couple of hours of
discussing your cars, ogling over others,
and having a drink or two with your fellow
club-mates.
If you want to have a lot of that
camaraderie, but don’t care for the shop
atmosphere, then look for the Saturday
morning breakfasts, which, as the name
suggests, mean dining at a local restaurant
with your fellow Porsche owners. These
are generally popular because they are
on the weekend and in the morning, a bit
easier for some people to attend
than having to drive across town after
work in rush-hour traffic. Given the time of
day, you can see dozens of freshly washed
Porsches of all types and years in the
parking lot. If you have an older car, and
see one you like, this is an excellent place
to get the lowdown from that car’s owner
to help you decide if you want to upgrade.
Generally, you will find that an upgrade is a
great thing. After all, would Porsche ever
make a car that was not better than its
predecessor? Even if you don’t upgrade,
you may make a new friend, or even learn
a little more Porsche trivia!
For people who are really serious
about showing off their cars, we have
the Concours d’Elegance, held in June.
Here you can enter your car, along with
hundreds of others, and have your car
judged on how pristine it is. When I say
“pristine”, I mean just that! The judges
have white gloves on their hands and get
their fingers into all kinds of nooks and
crannies to see how clean your car is.
There are many different categories, so if
you don’t mind preparing your car with a
Q-tip, you could win a ribbon. Even if you
don’t win something, you will see all kinds
of cool cars besides Porsches—Ferraris,
Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Mercedes and
others.
If you don’t like using Q-tips on your
car, but want to show it off, we offer the
tours. These start and end somewhat like
the membership meetings and breakfasts,
with lots of camaraderie and pretty parked
cars, but always have a tour associated
with them. This means, after check-in with
the group, you all drive as a group on a lot
of fun winding roads for a couple of hours
to an eatery of some type. It’s pretty cool
to see dozens of Porsches cruising along
on our beautiful mountain roads! Some
of our members have even been known
to earn substantial prizes, too—from the
State Patrol, or another local gendarme, if
they haven’t been watching their speed!
So, even if you are not a track junkie,
come out and join your fellow members.
There are lots of non-track related
activities to share in. After all, you didn’t
join the club just to read the newsletter, did
you?
positive offset David Schmidt, Editor upcoming events
This month’s cover
car was discovered
during one of my daily
ocular excursions on
our club’s Facebook
page a few weeks
back. It’s a fantastic
photo of a fantastic little Cab owned by
brand-new members (Donald and Alicia
Reynerson) to our ever-growing club of
Porsche throttlers.
I want to encourage all of our members
to click on over to our club’s nifty little FB
group page (http://www.facebook.com/
groups/pcarmr/) and become an online
member by simply requesting to join.
The page is administered by the very
diligent and omnipresent Jim Widrig, our
very own 1st Vice President. He, John
Mackin, Roger Buswell, Rick Gonçalves,
and Scott Rogers (who also does a very
meritorious job with our club web site -
http://rmr.pca.org), take great pride with
keeping the page fresh and generally
stamp your ticket for access quicker
than Walter Röhrl can whip the new 918
Spyder around the Nürburgring.
I was a bit shocked, to be honest, when
I discovered that for a club of nearly
2,200 members, our Facebook page has
a membership of just a tad less than 400.
Perhaps a little endorsement from yours
truly is in order ...
First, our FB page is the ultimate place
to stay connected to all things RMR. The
postings there are hot off the proverbial
digital virtual-presses, whereas the
beloved newsletter you are clutching in
get involved
Please see page 27 for display advertising
your hot little steering wheel grabbers is
showcasing news that may already have
a thin layer of dust on it. If you want to
stay current on event changes, updates,
and announcements, you just can’t do
much better than our FB page.
Second, take advantage of the power
of information technology by “joining”
one of the events you plan on attending
that is posted there. You’ll find out who
else in the club plans on going, and get
instantly alerted when any modifications
to the event occur. You can even export
these events to another calendar.
Third, there’s a big, fat online photo
library just waiting for you to peruse.
Typically, just a few hours after an RMR
event occurs, a photo library spouts up
faster than a daffodil in spring. Plus, you
get to make comments and disparaging
remarks about a fellow member’s driving
characteristics.
Finally, our FB group page is the best
way I can think of to collaborate with
your Porsche peers all from the comfort
of your own home, business or mobile
device. Meet new members, help others
with mechanical issues, shower your
pearls of Porsche wisdom onto the rest
of us, organize an impromptu road trip, or
otherwise share some useful information.
Well, I hope I convinced some of the
rest of you at least to drag yourselves
into the 21st century and become one of
those mysterious social networking types
you’ve no doubt heard about. You may
even find out FB can be used for more
than posting photos of your kitty.
Ahhh, we have “sprung
flowers are blooming
a week of competitive events, to socialize,
and to enjoy their cars, with seminars and
tours adding to the event’s variety.
A bit of Porsche Parade history … the
term “Parade” evolved in August 1956,
when 64 enthusiastic entrants gathered at a
suburban D.C. motel for four days of Porsche
enjoyment and friendship. A “parade” of
Porsches through the countryside caused
everyone to refer to the event as the Parade,
and the name has stuck! When possible,
Parade still has a “Parade of Cars,” typically
on the Saturday afternoon before the Victory
Banquet that evening. The “Parade of Cars”
is definitely a sight to behold and lots of fun
to participate in.
Besides the entrants, representatives
from the Porsche factory in Stuttgart and
from Porsche Cars North America also
attend, along with numerous automotiverelated
spokespeople. Members of the
Porsche family are also in attendance.
Parades are typically held in the summer,
and each year the Parade moves to a
different part of the country. Locations
range from downtown locales to remote
resort areas. This year Parade is returning
HighGear 5
May 2013

Mark your calendars for this fun early
Porsche driving-season event. Both
the autocross school and the May-
Nia autocross will be held at the Front
Range Airport, where there is plenty of
room to set up a long course with a lot of
interesting autocross features. Twists,
turns, and slaloms all await you to improve
and challenge your driving skills.
If you are new to the club, new to your
Porsche or other favorite four-wheeled
means of transport, want to improve
your driving technique, or simply want to
enjoy your Porsche, we encourage you
to register for the Autocross School on
Saturday May 4 and the full Autocross on
Sunday May 5.
Are you familiar with Autocross?
Autocross is a performance driving
experience conducted in a safe
environment at relatively low speeds. You
will not hurt your car and more importantly
you will not hurt yourself. However,
participants have complained about
strained smile muscles after spending a
day with our experienced instructors. But
don’t worry about that as we always have
refreshing beverages right after the event
to relax with and tell stories about how
fast we navigated the course regardless
of what the stopwatch indicated.
What WILL happen is that you will
gain additional confidence in your driving
ability, learn the limits of your car’s
braking capabilities, practice correct
seating, hand, feet and vision positions,
6
HighGear
May 2013
as well as push, and perhaps exceed, the
limits of your tires’ adhesion capabilities.
The technical word is “Gription.”
Each autocross has a unique course
design and undoubtedly provides you
with a fun driving experience. Last but
not least, autocross is a social event and
a great time to meet new club members
and visit with friends.
Autocross School
Our excellent club instructors will
work with you by providing plenty of
driving time through three car control
exercises. Learn about car balance
through two slalom courses and throttle
steering around two skid pads including
a fun figure-eight exercise. Not to worry.
This is not your local dirt track figure-
eight racing–only one car is allowed at a
time on the course during this exercise.
And finally, there is the mini-autocross
course where you will learn the layout of
an autocross course and practice looking
ahead (eyes up) to smooth out the course
and improve your times.
Parents, remember the School
and the Autocross
are both open to
licensed 16- and
17-year-olds. Do
you want to be
the BEST PARENT
EVER? Register your
teenager for the
school. We always
have an instructor in the car and the
skills they learn are directly applicable
to the street. Plus, the BEST PARENT
EVER designation comes with a three day
guarantee. (Parents of teenagers know
what that means.)
May-Nia Autocross
We will return to the Front Range
Airport facility where we continue
to receive rave reviews from our
autocrossers, or is it autocross-o-philes?
Neither one spell checks but you get the
idea. Run times are around a minute and
a quarter, which is a long time to hold your
breath if you haven’t attended the school
to learn how to breathe! This event is a
great chance to try out your new-found
skills from the school or to come out and
compete against your friends.
Details
Registration opens in March and
closes May 1. Click the RMR Event
Registration link on the club home page,
assure your spot.
Walkups will be accepted for both
days on a space-available basis. Cash and
for both events is appreciated as it allows
us to plan for “Beer: Thirty” as well as
organize the event and obtain volunteers.
A Porsche is not required. Only SUVs
with a Cayenne badge are permitted, and
no pickups are allowed. Convertibles are
just fine and you can run them with the
top down.
Restrooms are available onsite;
however, no concessions are available
nor are any nearby. Please remember to
bring your own lunch and non-alcoholic
drinks during the day. Refreshments will
be served at the end of each day. Coffee
and rolls will be provided each morning.
You will need a Snell-rated 2005 or
newer helmet. Motorcycle helmets with
this designation are acceptable. The
club will have several loaner helmets
available.
Directions to the Autocross Site
Caution! Do NOT use dot.com maps
or GPS using the airport’s address. These
services will take you to the terminal only
and not to the site of the event.
Take 1-70 East to the Manila Road–
Exit 299 (County Road 28).
the railroad tracks and make an
immediate right turn through the gates.
On April 6th, the driving instructor corps (including RMR and AMR
instructors) gathered in Westminster for its annual planning and
training meeting. This meeting provides an opportunity for the team
to debrief on what worked and what didn’t during the previous
year’s driving season, as well as to discuss ways to improve for the
current year.
Various members of the CDI (Chief Driving Instructor)
committee led talks, and we also had special guest Buzz Calkins
(standing, left), former pro IRL race driver, provide an informative
and interesting Q&A session.
The instructor corps always strives to maintain an effective and
professional team, and this is just one way we do this. They’re all
looking forward to a fun season of instructing, driving–and learning
–and wish the same for you too!
AMR’s DE-luxe
Delightfully
Delivers
Story: Scott Rogers, Photos: Danny Oldfield
Alpine Mountain Region hosted the
first Driver Education event of the
year at Pikes Peak International
Raceway on April 13-14 and it proved
to be a great success.
Other than the brisk wind the
weather was great with conditions in
the upper 60s. The facilities at PPIR
are top-notch with garage spaces and
big meeting spaces for the drivers’
meetings and dinner. With six run
groups on Saturday there was plenty
of space on the track to get clean
runs. Sunday had fewer people so we
dropped to only four groups and still
had plenty of open track. PPIR is a
great track to learn on because there
are fewer corners to remember. The
banked oval makes for some exciting
high-speed runs.
We had 92 drivers and
instructors, with 13 nonmembers, 40
AMR members, one Potomac Region
member, two Roadrunner members,
35 RMR members, and one Silver
Sage member.
Other than a blown oil line that
caused about an hour’s delay to allow
for clean-up, there were no incidents
on the track. Saturday night’s dinner
was catered with custom Porsche
cupcakes for desert.
worldwide success. Its brother, the new
Cayman, is launching this month and has
already captivated sports car enthusiasts
around the world.”
Since the inception of the World Car of
the Year Awards, Porsche has won World
Performance Car twice: for the 911 (2012)
and for the Cayman (2006).
The third-generation 2013 981 Boxster/
Cayman is the latest mid-engine offering
from Porsche. Completely redesigned,
it is lighter, more powerful and more fuel
efficient than its predecessor. A longer
wheelbase and larger wheels enhance the
driving experience.
Delivering 265 and 315 hp respectively,
the 2.7-liter Boxster and 3.4-liter Boxster
S are available with a six-speed manual
or seven-speed dual-clutch Porsche-
Doppelkupplingsgetriebe (PDK) automatic
transmission. The Boxster is available from
$49,500 and the Boxster S from $60,900, not
including a $950 destination charge.
The Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter
engine with 275 hp; with the Sport Chrono
package it accelerates from a standstill to
60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The 3.4-liter engine
in the Cayman S produces 325 hp; with PDK
and the Sport Chrono package it sprints
from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The car will
arrive in dealerships next month starting
at $52,600 for the Cayman and $63,800 for
The old track at
Pueblo Motorsports
Park (PMP) is back
and so are we! It’s
conveniently located
only about 30 minutes
from Colorado Springs
and about 90 minutes from
Denver. The track has been
resurfaced recently and is in
great shape.
If you’re new to DE, this track is an outstanding venue. We’ll
have instructors on-hand to teach you the basics and you’ll
be placed in run groups with your peers, so don’t worry about
running with the big dogs.
PMP is a great track that you haven’t run for a while (or ever)
with reasonable cost, lots of seat time, and convenient location;
and the odds are with us for good weather. We’ll even help offset
your cost for lunch. In other words: no excuses for not joining us
for a great weekend on May 18-19!
But wait, there’s more! The track’s new management, FAAST
Motorsports, is offering a “Test ‘n’ Tune” Day on Friday, May 17,
Join your Tourmasters, Chris and Kathleen Lennon, for another
legendary AMR Tour this July!
We will be heading up to Wyoming this year, to the historic
Saratoga Resort and Spa. The tour will begin on Friday, July 26th,
with a beautiful drive through Wyoming’s Snowy Range, with our
arrival into Saratoga in plenty of time to enjoy the natural hot
springs at the resort and even explore the town. We will then
enjoy a delicious dinner together that evening.
Saturday during the day, you’re free to explore all Saratoga
has to offer on your own, including options like golf, spa time,
floating down the placid Platte River, exploring the area on
standard or tandem bikes, horseback riding, four-wheeling,
fishing, hiking, and birding. When you register, you will be
asked for your preference, and we’ll arrange group rates for the
most popular activities. We will then gather that evening for an
Sept. 21-22: Turning Leaf Mystery Tour
This is it! The biggest tour of the year, from the PCA region known
for its fun tours. As in past years, Fall Tour, sponsored by Elite
Deck & Fence, will take you over exhilarating roads at the peak
time for viewing the fall colors. You’ll join your Porsche friends
for a weekend you’re sure to remember. The event will be led
by AMR’s Tourmasters Dwight and Dana Kasten, Jr., who have a
spectacular trip planned. And the best part is that the destination
is a mystery!
Virtually everything is included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
on Saturday, deluxe accommodations on Saturday night, the
most entertaining tour directions you’ve ever seen, and a great
May 18-19: No Excuses DE
at a cost of $150 for a full day or $90 for a half day. Just pay at the
gate. Please note that “Test ‘n’ Tune” is NOT affiliated with PCA
or a part of the DE event. You’ll also be able to do a trailer drop at
the track on Friday afternoon. Contact FAAST Motorsports (Judy
Faass at 719-761-1372) for additional information.
This event is made possible by Porsche of Colorado Springs,
so be sure to thank them sincerely! Also, special thanks to our
adult beverage sponsors (aka “Beer:Thirty”)Aspen Auto Clinic
and ReinCARnation Auto!
The host hotel for the weekend is the Wingate by Wyndham,
4711 N. Elizabeth St. Pueblo, CO, 81008 (located just off I-25, Exit
102, about 4 miles from the track). They are offering a special
discount rate ($83/room/night, plus tax) for DE attendees. When
reserving, just ask for the PCA No Excuses DE rate. The hotel is
holding a block of rooms for us until May 3, so reserve early at
Please sign up today at www.motorsportreg.com (your fee
includes $10 vouchers for food for each day of driving). The cost
for both days is $210 (co-driver in same car: $170) or
outdoor cookout at the resort. Sunday will see us hopping back
in our cars for a gorgeous drive back into Colorado together on
some more perfect Porsche roads.
We have negotiated great group rates with the Saratoga
Resort and Spa (inclusive of taxes), with standard rooms at
$151.48/night, deluxe rooms at $181.77/night, and suites at
$220.32/night. If those rooms fill up, we also have rooms at the
historic Wolf Hotel, fairly nearby, at $70-$110/night (plus tax).
All meals are included on Friday, breakfast and dinner are
included on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch are included
on Sunday. Driving tours Friday and Sunday and use of the hot
springs are included as well plus much more!
The cost is $225 per person and June 26 is the deadline for
registration, so sign up today at www.motorsportreg.com. For
questions, contact cjlennon@comcast.net.
keepsake of your weekend! Two special events are included, at
the destination and at the end of the tour.
Registration opens Monday, June 3rd, on MotorsportReg.
com. Tour will be limited to the first 46 cars. Fall Tours are
traditionally sellouts (as I’m sure this one will be as well!), so mark
this date on your calendar so you don’t miss out on the premier
AMR event of the year! We look forward to having you join us for
a fun time! Cost is expected to be $350 per couple, or $300 for a
single-person car (including everything above).
remember, we don’t know where we’re going!
May 2013

Original owner of a ‘57 1600 Super Coupe Richard “Skeet” Gifford
Automobiles are in my DNA. Some of
my earliest childhood memories are of
watching my father tinker with his new
1939 Lincoln Zephyr. I was a college
freshman when I first saw a black 1951
Porsche coupe on a dealer’s lot. It was
faster and more comfortable than the most
popular sports car of the time, the MG. For
me, it was love at first sight.
After two years of college, I entered
the Air Force and applied for pilot
training. I graduated in March, 1955,
and was assigned to a C-119 squadron
in France. Special prices were offered
to GIs in Europe, so we saved our money
and in July, 1957 I ordered a silver 1600
Super coupe from the Porsche dealer
in Paris. When it was ready, I caught a
hop to Stuttgart and on the morning of
Aug. 9, 1957, took delivery at the factory in
Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, West Germany.
I must have realized even then that the
Porsche 356 was a landmark achievement.
With an engine of only 97 cubic inches
displacement, it would cruise effortlessly
at a true 100 miles per hour and had a
maximum speed of 112. Unlike most
22
HighGear
May 2013
American cars at the
time, it was stable
and remarkably quiet
at those speeds. Road
& Track observed
that the brakes
were engineered for
an automobile four
times the weight of
the 356. At normal
Interstate cruising
speeds, it consistently
delivers better than 30
miles per gallon. And
with simplicity similar to
that of a VW bug, the 356 invites owner
maintenance.
In fairness, there were issues, the
most serious of which was the sevenpiece
Hirth roller bearing crankshaft
installed on all Super engines through
1957. The crankshaft was designed for
aircraft and racing applications, but
proved unreliable on the street. My car is
only 71 units from the point where the Hirth
crank was discontinued. Replacement
was both expensive ($916 in 1961 dollars)
and inconvenient (El Paso,
TX while enroute from
California to Missouri).
Other issues were
relatively minor, most
being corrected during
the remaining eight years
of production.
The Porsche was my
primary transportation
for 25 years, all but
eight of those here in
Colorado. She doesn’t
do snow anymore, but
when that was her job, she performed
like a champion. A cosmetic restoration
has been done along with several
upgrades to improve both reliability and
safety. It is still numbers-matching but is
not a show car. I’ve driven to club events,
including drives in 2004 to Williamsburg,
VA and in 2008 to Lancaster, PA. I also
have a couple of old Mopars, but when
I slip behind the wheel of the 356 (albeit
with less agility than 55 years ago), I’m
with an old friend with whom I’ve shared
a lifetime of experiences.

in the zone Liz Shaw, PCA Zone 9 Representative
Hello, fellow Zone 9-ers! For my April
report, even though I submitted it late, I
still wasn’t able to write about a couple
of earlier events that had occurred.
So now I’ll catch you up in this report.
Near the end of February, West Texas
Region held a fun poker run that
started in Lamesa, TX. Six drivers from
Lubbock joined six or seven drivers
from Midland/Odessa. As Stan Cribbs reported, Lamesa is
a small, nondescript town, but the enthusiasm of the poker
people made up for that! There were seven stops, where
drivers picked up playing cards to make their poker hand.
At the lunch stop (Pedroza’s Mexican Restaurant), prizes
were awarded to the best and worst poker hands. Afterward,
everyone made their way home and some people extended
their drives to put in a few more fun miles on their cars.
About a month later and farther southwest in Texas, the
Carrera Region held its monthly meeting at the shop of fellow
PCA member Lenny Loftin—Redline Racing. There were
15 cars in attendance, including David Gerli’s beautiful red
991—and the line-up made quite the scene! During the
meeting, El Paso Motorplex owner Lyle Byrum described
some possible expansions to the Motorplex. A 1.4-mile road
racing course is being proposed, and parking lot areas will
be expanded. Keep your fingers crossed that funding is
acquired and approved so that the new course could open
as soon as fall of 2014. Carrera Region President Dan Thomas
will provide info on track membership buy-in options, etc., as
the info becomes available.
Speaking of new venues, Roadrunner Region will hold the
Die Serie #4 autocross at a gargantuan parking lot near the
Albuquerque international airport on May 11. Check the
Roadrunner Region website for details.
Llano Estacado continues to have its monthly breakfast/
membership meeting at Furr’s Cafeteria in Amarillo, and I
hope to get out there soon for one of the meetings. Even
though the region is very small, the members are like all of us
from larger regions—we love to talk cars as often as we can!
As reported earlier, Alpine Mountain, Intermountain, and
Rocky Mountain Regions will have DEs in April, and the June
Zone 9 report will have lots of details and pictures from two
of the events (I will not be able to attend the IMR DE because
I’ll be at the RMR DE that same weekend).
serially maligned beater of a oncesporty
vehicular conveyance down the
side streets of your subdivision, your dad
beside you, hanging onto the dashboard
with a death grip, as you endeavored
to learn just what the friction point of a
clutch was.
Now. When you wax poetic about the
joys of driving a stick shift, the sense of
oneness, the control, the finesse, the
beauty of a perfect throttle-matched
downshift...your child stops you and
asks, “What’s a friction point?” And you
look out in space, because you can’t
show them. You’re driving a PDK.
Then. If you were a Formula 1 fan,
you subscribed to Road & Track out
of desperation, because it was the
only way to find out who won a race.
You checked the mailbox daily, for the
peripatetic commentary produced by
one Henry N. Manney III. Even though
the results were hopelessly out of date.
No matter. They were from a faraway
world you only imagined in your dreams,
with track names that you couldn’t even
pronounce. The closest thing was the
world imagined in the novels of Ian
Fleming.
Now. You can watch each race, live,
on the NBC Sports Channel, if you get the
NBC Sports Channel.
Then. The only exception was Monaco.
Which ABC televised on the Wide World
of Sports.
Now. I wish they brought back the
Wide World of Sports. At least I wouldn’t
have to search in vain for the NBC Sports
Channel. Plus, I miss the Wee Scot’s
color commentary.
Then. You were the only one, among
your close friends, who actually followed
F1.
Now. You are the only one, among your
HighGear
May 2013
close friends, who actually follows F1.
Then. The 904, the 906, the 908, the
910, the 917, the 934, the 935, the 956/962.
They were icons, the dominant racers in
sports prototype racing, worldwide.
Now. Let’s see, you got your RSR and
GT3 Cup cars, running in country-specific
series all over the world. But what about
an outright world championship? Any
outright world championship? What’s
that you say? Next year? Oh, ok.
Then. The parallel parking maneuver
in a 911 put hair on your chest, made
your biceps and triceps pop. God help
you if you were asthmatic, because
the shortness of breath could cause
palpitations.
Now. What’s that sound? Oh, it’s the
incessant beep, beep, beep of the rear
parking distance alert, and it’s getting
louder and more insistent.
Then. There was really only one high
performance tire, the Michelin X. And
it came from the people who invented
the radial. And the tires were good for
40,000 miles, easy.
Now. You know what’s coming: 13,000
miles from the fronts of your Pilot Super
Sports, 10,000 miles from the rears, if
you’re lucky. Less with Cup tires. A lot
less.
Then. Air conditioning meant using
one of those silly air fresheners that
hang from the rear view mirror.
Now. There is no such thing. It’s
climate control.
Then. You would fit an Ansa exhaust,
or Stebro, and the blat made you go
searching for underpasses, where you’d
roll down the windows, in order to relish
the vibrato.
Now. They “tune” the exhaust sound
at the factory, so that just the right
amount of involvement actually gets
sent back into the interior, just enough
to let you know you’re driving a high
performance car ... but not so much that
it will overwhelm the multi-watt, multispeaker
audiophile sound system.
Then. And, speaking of sound systems,
you had AM radio. On/off, volume and
tune. With maybe six preset buttons.
And a single, forlorn, speaker in the
middle of the dash.
Now. You can carry your whole
symphonic catalog in your pocket. And
when you’re ready, just take out your
smartphone, plug it in and sit back and
enjoy, wherever and whenever you go.
Then. Racetracks actually looked
different. There were hay bales along the
periphery. The tracks ran up and down,
over dunes, through forests. In certain
places the cars actually got airborne.
And some tracks were long enough that
they really felt like you went somewhere.
Now. They’re all designed by that
same guy, I can’t remember his name,
and I don’t want to. And they’re all to
FIA regulations. Which means that, on
F1 telecasts, if the camera doesn’t pull
back to show you the surroundings,
you have absolutely no idea what track
you’re viewing.
Then. Social media meant whooping
it up with your pals in the infield,
and occasionally glancing up at the
scoreboard to find out who was leading.
Now. You can vent all you want on-line
with like-minded narrowcast obsessives
on who’s taller, Lewis Hamilton or
Fernando Alonzo.
Then. Chris Economacki did the
driver interviews. And the whole thing
amounted to the fabled “What’s it like
out there?”
Now. Drivers say nothing, other than
thanking their sponsors for the privilege
of being where they are, at that particular
moment. And sometimes they thank their
crew. But it’s not like they need to say
anything, because we’ve been sharing
the cockpit with them, the whole race,
through the magic of in-car cameras.
Then. The cars that race today at
the Monterey Historics and Rennsport
Reunions were new.
Now. The same cars are racing. But
they’re old. Yet we still love the sight, the
sound, the smell. You know what that
says about us? Yes, that’s right. We’re
old, too.

what we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in
your Porsche by particip ating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech
sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities to enjoy and learn about
your Porsche.
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which
participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in advance). A tour
may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend
with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow
scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/
or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are
sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a
dose of competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR
typically offers several. A number of tours are usually
offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified by a set of
instructions. Rallies are typically run on public,
paved roads, and speed limits are always observed.
The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-
Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD
rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions
precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points
are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations
of which are not known in advance) early or late. A
Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually
involves solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at
least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade
also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally,
each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined by orange
cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are
generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH
(no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing
cars are spaced at long intervals—typically only one
or two cars are on the course at any time. Autocross
is a safe way to experience high-performance driving
while learning to drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new members.
Historically, a membership meeting begins with a
social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s
program. The content of the program varies, sometimes
featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest
speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge
racer Randy Pobst.
RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise
stated, are held the first Thursday of the month.
Different venues and topics will keep the meetings
fresh and inviting. Watch High Gear and the RMR
Web site for details. And if you have any ideas for a
program, talk to the Program Committee Chair or a
Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like—a session
in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for
gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical,
“do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake bleeding.
Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced
Driving Events
Non-Driving Events
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially an
autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX school
in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event
at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe, controlled
environment for high-performance driving instruction.
DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to
hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced
instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment.
In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis
at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though:
the DE experience may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some
DE events are followed immediately by a time trial
event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their
performance. Lap times may then be used to measure
personal improvement, for bragging rights, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La
Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak
International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race
weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and
“heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint”
and “endurance” races. As a Club Racing license
(issued by PCA National) is required for competition,
club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The
cars they bring with them to the track can be quite
impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing
program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First
Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event of this
magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers.
However, a club race is also one of most exciting
events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High Plains
Raceway which, combined with a Driver Education
event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!
Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of
RMR events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically
in the “off months” when few driving events take
place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered
at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close
to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged
categories usually exist, typically differentiating
between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level
of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation”
or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be
entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to
participate but not compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local concours
events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports
Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United
Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade
also hosts a major concours each year.
Springtime was late in 1983, dumping alternating loads of white
stuff and wet stuff on the Sunday, May 15 Alfred Packer Memorial
Hillclimb. Starting times were delayed an hour and afternoon
rain forced the early termination of the hillclimb. Forty-one
drivers managed runs over the half-mile course. Top time of the
day for men was Ned Chapman in his Class 6 911 coupe at 37.511.
Women’s top time was Linda Cottingham at 44.392.
