Message from the President
We are excited that since we met in Hanover on Homecoming Weekend and our
BADA Reunion, we have grown more resolute about the key opportunities that
await us. It is clear that we can make a difference for the students, our fellow
alumni and to the College. We have engaged more frequently with the College,
listened more thoughtfully to our students, and are asking critical questions about
our role in driving improvement and change.
We have a single-minded focus on investing our time and resources in helping
Dartmouth’s Black students and alumni in their careers. We are convinced the best means of achieving
this is by restoring the BADA Regional organizations, and networking with Dartmouth Clubs and
alumni/ae in each area. We recognize there are many perspectives about the issues we face, however
we want our vision, strategy and actions to be a single voice shared and owned by each alumni and
student. Therefore, it is intentional that our Executive Committee is small, and we have ten regions
with many alumni resources available to each. We are all very passionate about our time in Hanover,
and each of us has a unique talent that can make a difference as we charge ahead to enhance the
Dartmouth experience for future Black students graduates.
We are challenging ourselves to find and celebrate the vast accomplishments of all of our alumni/ae
through our website and newsletters. But because our network is usually limited to the people that
were with us at graduation, it is important that we expand our reach to be more inclusive and current
about the plethora of events, career moves, and special announcements. Soon we will have webambassadors
to assist us in making this happen in a more seamless manner. But until then, YOU can
help by emailing your input to us. (ebr392002@yahoo.com; monica@hooksinc.net;
BADA STRATEGY AND ACTIONS
We also invested some time being thoughtful about how we want to engage with Black students, the
College and fellow alumni/alumnae. The Leadership Team is continuing to listen to your view and they
have greatly informed us. Here’s a summation of your input:
A. Develop Student Enrichment programs – Action: Increase recruitment, support FYSEP, and
expand mentoring efforts
B. Re-build the BADA Regional structure with close alignment to Dartmouth Clubs – Action: Above is
the agreed list of Regional Director and Decade Reps. Please begin to reach out to them as they
begin to form the structures needed to move forward.
C. Develop a strong Career Network amongst alumni and with students – Action: Identify career
segment leaders who will define how we design and execute the network to enhance career
possibilities
D. Increase our economic development for self-reliance and contribution to Dartmouth – Action:
Develop a campaign to enhance our current financial position supported by individual
contributions and sponsorships
E. Improve communications networks - Action: Re-design our website, develop a BADA directory,
and develop an event calendar to increase on-campus visibility
Thank you again for your contributions and dues to BADA. Through your gifts …
We want to provide more scholarships, support student enrichment and mentoring, create career
opportunities, sponsor off-campus internships, and become a more self-reliant organization.
Program (FYSEP) to the orientation of a select group of 2014’s. This program is designed to improve
the transition from high school to Dartmouth for first-generation college students. Additionally, a new
Greek–Town
The brothers of Dartmouth College’s oldest
Black Greek letter organization, Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Theta Zeta chapter has
graduated more than 200 brothers since its
inception in 1971. The Chapter continues its
commitment to service at Dartmouth College,
highlighted by the annual Martin Luther King Jr.
birthday celebration and march across campus.
BADA Regions
Mentoring
Kristina Black ’12 (mentee,) from the Chicagoarea,
on Tyrone Byrd ’73 (mentor):
“I was paired with Mr. Byrd spring term of
sophomore year because of my interest in
obtaining a dual J.D/ M.B.A. degree and for
some people, contacting someone they had
never met would have been simple, but I was
definitely a bit nervous. I needn’t have been;
not only did Mr. Byrd answer all of my
questions about the accounting profession and
his career, he put me in touch with other alums,
James Carr in Chicago, and Jeffery Hunter, who
were both open and eager to talk and meet
with me, sharing the wealth of their
experiences and invaluable suggestions.
Each of these mentors has stressed the
critical importance of networking. I found a
phenomenal internship last quarter, Fall 2010,
in the Global Employer Services dept. at
Deloitte LLP Tax, in Chicago. Working as a tax
intern, not only was I invited to return next
summer, I was offered a contract—which I was
thrilled to sign, for full-time employment
beginning in June, 2012 as a Tax Consultant.”
The BADA Executive Committee and the Regional Directors have committed to restoring our
presence in the ten cities across the country. This is the single most important thing we can accomplish
over the next few years. It will re-engage our alumni and students, as well as create a revitalized
interest in the College. Gatherings like this one (below) in DC, and those that have been held in New
York, Philadelphia and Atlanta, exemplify this new spirit.
