The changing face of
entertainment
MOVIE Solutions, the new venture in the entertainment industry!
It is difficult to believe that the history of film spans just a little over a hundred years, from the latter part
of the 19 th century, to the present day, where motion pictures are one of the most important tools of
communication, entertainment and mass media in the 20 th century. Even harder to believe is that it’s only
in the last thirty years movies came to our home VCR’s, while DVD’s became the new standard for
customer video only in the late 1990’s.
While the ways and means in which entertainment is consumed may change, the one constant is that
people will always seek after forms of passive relaxation. Here are three business formats that are being
used to deliver home entertainment, in the form of DVD’s, games and now also Blue-Ray format:
1. TRADITIONAL BRICKS ‘N MORTAR
The Friday night stop for “videos and takeaways” is deeply etched in the memories of many middleclass
South Africans, who grew up with this weekly ritual signaling the start of the weekend. Part of the fun is
browsing in the video store for the right movie, and arguing with siblings over marketing the selection.
The tradition continues for many, and the bricks and mortar DVD store continues to thrive, as seen by the
exponential growth of Africa’s largest movie rental group, Mr. Video. Launched in 1994, it has over 200
stores and opens three to four new stores a month. “People are definitely watching more movies today –
an exciting trend for Mr. Video” says Mr. Video multiple franchise owner Vincent Esterhuizen. “Not only is
our population growing, but young people are also familiar with modern technology and local TV
definitely doesn’t provide sufficient entertainment.” As to the question of whether bricks and mortar DVD
stores will be replaced by online rental services, the general consensus is that, like books and magazines,
there will always be a place for real activities and the social experience of picking out a Movie from a
shelve is something that can’t be replicated virtually.
2. QUICK AND EASY KIOSKS
A business format that is becoming known, for both businesses and consumers, is the automated kiosk.
Automated DVD rental terminals has taken the European market by storm, while the industry is still in its
infancy in the US and virtually unheard of in South Africa but already exists in our country for more than
5 years. The fact remains that these terminals offer no personal attention and do not carry huge amounts
of stock or variety and therefore it is not well supported by the South African movie lovers. It seems that
this alternative is not bound to popularity locally because of the fun of “getting out” to your local rental
store and browsing for the right movie.
3. ONLINE RENT-A-MOVIE
With online shopping now possible, it makes sense that one should be able to rent movies in the same
fashion, without having to leave the convenience of one’s home. This still leaves the customer with the
remaining fact that rental items must be returned and will always remain the responsibility of the
customer, as with the automated rental system, to return rented items.

MOVIE Solutions, the NEW VENTURE in the entertainment industry!
The type of format that you select to run your business in the entertainment industry can however
change the nature of your day-to-day operation. With today’s busy consumer demanding convenience
above all else, MOVIE Solutions Kiosks can be placed in a variety of easy-to-access locations at any
shopping centre and focus mainly on new releases (which generate 90% of the industry’s revenue)- it has
a footprint of only nine square meter, requires a maximum of four staff members working six hour shifts.
The kiosk contains up to 3000 movies and games and carry’s a wide variety to please most consumers.
MOVIE Solutions is a full-service DVD / Blue-Ray and Gaming Rental Service, dedicated to consistently
providing high customer satisfaction by rendering excellent service, latest technology products and
furnishing an enjoyable atmosphere at an acceptable price/value relationship. We will also maintain a
friendly, fair and creative work environment which respects diversity, ideas and hard work.
Our goal is to create a viable Movie Rental Franchise Business and leading on from this to develop cutting
edge Video Rental Software to compliment the franchise business system.
We believe that we have what it takes to make this venture an extremely successful one. It enhances the
customer experience bringing value to any Shopping Centre where the kiosk exists.
To achieve our objectives, Franchisees of MOVIE Solutions Home Entertainment to identify “floor-space”
within any potential Centre at a maximum of 3m x 3m to set up such rental kiosk. The kiosk is not a fixture
and will be constructed on a loose carpet, the exact size of the kiosk. This will make the structure easy to
move, if necessary. Another enhancement is that the structure (kiosk) can fit the interior of the Mall. The
timber construction of the kiosk can be color-coded to fit the interior look of any Mall/Shopping Centre.
MOVIE Solutions will, upon commencement of operation, rent out a wide range of DVD, Blue-Ray and
Gaming services and products. We will provide quality Home Entertainment Services along with top lines
of DVD, Blue-Ray and Gaming products. What will set MOVIE Solutions apart from the opposition is our
commitment to providing all of these services and more in one convenient location.
MOVIE Solutions is considered an upscale Movie and Gaming Rental Kiosk. We will offer a wide range of
Movies and Games to RENT that includes:
• Latest movies available on DVD disc
• Latest movies available on Blue-Ray disc
• Older movies on DVD / Blue-Ray disc
• Variety PlayStation2 games + consoles
• Variety PlayStation3 games
• Variety X-BOX games
MOVIE Solutions wants to set itself apart from other Movie and Game Rental ideas that may offer only
one or two types of service. Having come from a normal rental store, the owner has realized, from
discussions with clients that they may desire all of the products and services mentioned, but they remain
frustrated because, they must return rented items at one place, to the store they rent from. Although
the focus of MOVIE Solutions is Home Entertainment and service, we do wish to offer our clients the
convenience of returning rented items to more than one location.
There are a number of rental stores, but they are mainly in suburbs and in town or surrounding areas. We
do intend to bring the service to a central point where all suburbs, in town and surrounding areas are
connected, and that leads to the mall/shopping centre.
Our business atmosphere will be a relaxing one where clients can enjoy free access to our movie/gaming
cover display, read the short story on the back-page of their selected movie and make their decision on
what to watch or what to play. Soft drinks and assorted sweets will be on sale. Flat-screen televisions will
be located on the four sides of the kiosk (top level) to display “Coming Soon” and “New Released” movies.

Our marketing strategy is a simple one: “satisfied clients are our best marketing tool”.
No major advertising campaign is anticipated. Our research has shown that word of mouth is the best
advertising for this type of business. We will, however, run specials throughout the week. Contracts will
also be on offer to clients at all times which will give them even more value for their money. Lucky Draws
will take place once a month which enable clients to win prizes or rental contracts. (Membership will be
free of charge)
MOVIE Solutions will be organized and managed in a creative and innovative fashion to generate very high
levels of customer satisfaction, and to create a working climate conductive to a high degree of personal
development and economic satisfaction for employees.
Training to help improve franchisees / employee product knowledge and working skills will be conducted
on a regular basis. As the business grows, the company will consider offering Employee Benefit Packages,
this includes health and vacation benefits for everyone.
The personnel plan calls for two permanent staff members working 6 (six) hour shifts, depending on the
normal shopping hours of the mall/shopping centre and the need of clients. On weekends, two casuals
will be required to work with a staff member to improve speedy sales and personal attention to customer
needs.
The business will not have to wait long for clients to learn about it, since the movie rental market is
established.
We believe that revenues will grow at a monthly rate, increasing on school holidays due to a historical
jump in revenues at these times of the year. We anticipate this increase to stay steady throughout the
following year to account for the normal flow of new clients coming to join.
FRANCHISE Cost: R220,000 (see Franchise Agreement for detailed information)
We hope that you will consider this great FRANCHISE opportunity.
Our goal will always be to offer high standard and quality service which we believe may benefit any
franchisee.
We look forward to hearing from you.
