PGY-2 residents will:<br />

• Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ culture, age,<br />

gender, sexual orientation and disabilities<br />

• Demonstrate commitment to ethical principles regarding provisions or<br />

withholding <strong>of</strong> medical care, patient confidentiality and informed consent<br />

• Function well as a member <strong>of</strong> a team and be respectful <strong>of</strong> co-workers and<br />

referring physicians<br />

• Maintain comprehensive, accurate and timely medical records<br />

• Demonstrate they are reliable in carrying out orders from the attending<br />

physician<br />

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement<br />

• Demonstrate ability to use information technology and feedback to<br />

improve their fund <strong>of</strong> knowledge and skills and contribute to patient care<br />

Interpersonal Skills and Communication<br />

Patient Care<br />

• Communicate with patients and their families/caregivers in an easily<br />

understood and culturally sensitive manner including the use <strong>of</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional interpreters when needed<br />

• Maintain patient confidentiality<br />

• Communicate with other physicians, and health care providers<br />

• Maintain accurate and timely medical records


• Participate in planning and carrying out simulations for treatment planning<br />

• Learn about different types <strong>of</strong> immobilization (e.g., head masks) and<br />

setups for treatment<br />

• Participate in treatment verification & port films<br />

• Consider palliative vs. curative therapy Participate in planning and<br />

carrying out simulations<br />

• Participate in drawing accurate tumor volumes and tissue constraints<br />

• Perform initial history and physical examinations noting all pertinent<br />

findings and begin to formulate strategies for care and management<br />

• Monitor patients under treatment with the attending<br />

• Alert the attending to any new problems <strong>of</strong> a patient undergoing treatment<br />

or workup in the department<br />

• See follow-up patients with the attending<br />

• Coordinate medical care with other health care providers involved in the<br />

complications <strong>of</strong> radiation <strong>of</strong> different sites<br />

i. 2-dimensional<br />

ii. 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT)<br />

iii. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)<br />

iv. CyberKnife Radiosurgery<br />

v. High-dose rate implants


vi. Permanent seed implants for prostate cancer<br />

• Participate in the planning <strong>of</strong> various techniques, including:<br />

vii. CNS<br />

viii. Head and neck<br />

xi. GI-esophagus, stomach, rectal, anal<br />

xii. GYN-endometrial, cervix, vulva<br />

• Demonstrate the ability to logically formulate treatment management<br />

decisions<br />

• Demonstrate an understanding <strong>of</strong> normal tissue tolerance to radiation<br />

• Demonstrate an understanding <strong>of</strong> the use <strong>of</strong> photons, electrons, 3D and<br />

IMRT in treatment planning<br />

• Demonstrate an understanding <strong>of</strong> side effects <strong>of</strong> radiation therapy<br />

• Participate and demonstrate an understanding <strong>of</strong> the Simulation Process
