UCSF RADIATION ONCOLOGY UPDATE:
CROSS-PLATFORM RADIATION THERAPY
IN AN EVIDENCE-BASED WORLD
This year, the benefits of individual radiation
treatment modalities will be discussed in the
context of the availability of a wide variety of
technologies. Whether it is radiosurgery,
stereotactic or intraoperative radiation therapy,
tomotherapy, or linac-based radiation therapy,
the process of choosing the best treatment
approach on the right platform will be
addressed, using concrete technical and
clinical examples. A session will also be
devoted to the understanding and clinical use
of deformation image registration tools.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The course is intended for a national audience
of radiation oncologists and medical physicists
actively involved in the clinical activities or the
decision-making process of using radiation for
cancer treatment.
OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this course is to increase
competence and improve clinician practice in
radiation oncology.
Upon completion of this course participants should
be able to improve expertise in the following areas:
• Identify and describe the numerous choices of
treatment technologies;
• Relate the benefits of different modalities to
specific clinical sites;
• Cite evidence for and against current and
emerging technologies;
• Identify cross-platform scenarios for which rigid
and deformable image registration (DIR) tools
are advantageous;
• Understand the limitations of deformable image
registration;
• Describe major clinical applications of
deformable image registration.
