Act, now
Municipal officials should act immediately to
see that the'citizenry doesn't lose interest in
recycling, following recent announcements that,
old newspapers and glass were no longer being
^collected because of depressed markets for these
Ttwo recyclables.
: The Cape May County Municipal Utilities
'Authority has offered to coordinate recycling efforts
between the municipal level and the private
•processor, at least for newsprint. This service is
commendable, and it should be expanded to include
glass* bottles as well. According to the
MUA, if the municipalities get the newsprint to
the MUA transfer station in Middle Township,
•the MUA. will haul it tq the processor in Pennsylvania;
' - 1 ,
• Municipal officials were too quick in calling a
halt to-'recycling efforts locally. Despite tht
depressed market, the trend toward recycling
should be fostered, not abandoned. Recycling
should continue even if it isn't profitable, even if
it doesn't break even. We cannot afford to fill up
our one county landfill before its time. We should
hot throw in the towel so quickly.
