Extend the
sewer liiie
to township
• Besides being restaurants, the Tuckahoe Inn,
Yesterdays and Obadiah's have something else
" in common. The proprietors of ttats# estabUshs
merits, along with the owners of Boulevard
• Liquors and Super Deli, have spent thousands of
- dollars on their septic systems.
The Tuckahoe Inn on Route 9 is located on
• Great Egg Harbor Bay in Beesley's Point. The
other establishments are along Roosevelt
' Boulevard in the section of Upper Township between
the mainland and the entrance to Ocean
City. All are located adjacent to sensitive
. wetlands. Lack of municipal water and sewage
service and proximity to bodies of water impor-
: tant to our wetland environment have forced
these business people to spend tens if thousands
- of dollars on septic systems which don't pollute
the wetlands environment — an environment
which in the long run is crucial to our resort
economy.
Each of these businesses has proven to be important
to the area economy too, hiring hundreds
of area residents on a seasonal as well as yearround
basis Each of the proprietors has proven
to be responsible business people. Responsible
businessmen certainly are concerned with
profits, but they also care about their surroundings,
and damaging the environment wouldn't
be something a responsible businessperson
would likely do purposely.
The businesses and the environment art both
important to this area and insofar as they can
exist in harmony, they are compatible, and
anything within reason should be done to foster
their existence.
JV' Serious consideration, therefore, should.;be
' '.given to establishing a trunk line from the Cape
-May County Municipal Utilities Authority waste
:,water treatment plant in Ocean City to serve
Roosevelt Boulevard and Route 9. The very high
^cost of such an extension could be paid by bond-
" ing, with existing and future users paying their
share.

"would go a long way toward attracting more
-i business ratables. And the more using an extan-
• '> ded sewer line, the lower tte cost to each.
As the township continues to grow; so-called
city sewerage will become a necessity for homes
• -"as well as businesses. Why not get the ball
j. rolling before the need for sewerage reaches
£ crisis proportions, as it has now in the Wildwoods?
• With proper planning and responsible people,
. the environment can be protected and progress
can continue — compatibly for all.
