He didn't rest<br />

on the oars<br />

The death last Friday <strong>of</strong> T John Carey was a<br />

loss not only to his family and loved ones, but for<br />

the entire community as well. And John Carey's<br />

community extended beyond the borders <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>City</strong>.<br />

As a promoter <strong>of</strong> a common sense approach to<br />

beach preservation, for example, Mr Carey<br />

championed the use <strong>of</strong> jetty winp — wooden<br />

piling extended perpendicular to existing stone<br />

groins — to trap ocean borne sand with each<br />

breaking wave. Examples <strong>of</strong> these winp exist<br />

literally from one end <strong>of</strong> Cape May County to the<br />

other.<br />

Sand piling techniques using sand scooped up<br />

at the water's edge and deposited in small<br />

mounds higher up on the beach were Mr. Carey's<br />

latest technique to help build beaches at a cost<br />

every resort can afford<br />

"T. John," as his countless friends knew him,<br />

was a member <strong>of</strong> county and state beach preservation<br />

groups. His many years <strong>of</strong> hands-on experience<br />

and first-hand knowledge <strong>of</strong> the surf<br />

and beaches will not be lost, as others, hopefully,<br />

continue the cause which he so earnestly and<br />

sincerely championed.<br />

It is, however, the innumerable plaques, handcrafted<br />

over the years, which will probably serve<br />

as the most lasting memorial to Mr. Carey for<br />

many, for there are many people whom he so<br />

honored for their efforts at making <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>City</strong><br />

the place to be.<br />

His plaques, which commended the deeds <strong>of</strong><br />

presidents, princesses and common men, were<br />

unique — each showing the loving care with<br />

which they were created, each In their style as<br />

unique as the former lifeguard, teacher, coach,<br />

real estate businessman, loving husband and<br />

dedicated citizen was unique in his lifetime <strong>of</strong><br />

concern for his community and fellow man.<br />
