opinions
He didn't rest
on the oars
The death last Friday of T John Carey was a
loss not only to his family and loved ones, but for
the entire community as well. And John Carey's
community extended beyond the borders of
Ocean City.
As a promoter of a common sense approach to
beach preservation, for example, Mr Carey
championed the use of jetty winp — wooden
piling extended perpendicular to existing stone
groins — to trap ocean borne sand with each
breaking wave. Examples of these winp exist
literally from one end of Cape May County to the
other.
Sand piling techniques using sand scooped up
at the water's edge and deposited in small
mounds higher up on the beach were Mr. Carey's
latest technique to help build beaches at a cost
every resort can afford
"T. John," as his countless friends knew him,
was a member of county and state beach preservation
groups. His many years of hands-on experience
and first-hand knowledge of the surf
and beaches will not be lost, as others, hopefully,
continue the cause which he so earnestly and
sincerely championed.
It is, however, the innumerable plaques, handcrafted
over the years, which will probably serve
as the most lasting memorial to Mr. Carey for
many, for there are many people whom he so
honored for their efforts at making Ocean City
the place to be.
His plaques, which commended the deeds of
presidents, princesses and common men, were
unique — each showing the loving care with
which they were created, each In their style as
unique as the former lifeguard, teacher, coach,
real estate businessman, loving husband and
dedicated citizen was unique in his lifetime of
concern for his community and fellow man.
