IMPORTANT NOTE.
If you are using Google Chrome as your browser, rather than Internet Explorer or Firefox,
there have been a few reports of readers not being able to download and read Dargaville
Online.
Adobe Reader which is the program used to view this publication is the culprit!
To fix the problem, open Adobe Reader, go to the View Menu and choose Preferences. Scroll
down to the Internet click on the option and click on it. Make sure that the tick in the field
“Display PDF in Browser” is removed by clicking on it. Click OK. Adobe Reader may take a
moment to close as this setting is reconfigured. The PDF file will now download rather than
open in the Browser so it can be read separately.
A big thanks to Hugh Rose for resolving this issue.
So What Is A Bling Party?
The Aratapu Tavern is having a Bling Party on Saturday 14 th August from 6
– 9.00pm. There are prizes for the best dressed. Don’t know what to wear?
Here are some tips:
Attending theme-based parties can help guide what to wear, which seems
like it would make a wardrobe decision even easier. That’s not always the
case, though. If attending a bling-themed party, improvisation skills will
come into play if, unlike well-heeled celebrities, thousands of dollars in
jewellery is out of reach.
Outfit: Ladies should wear a top or dress that sparkles. The point of a bling party is to show off pricey and flashy
clothes and jewellery, even if it’s fake. Glittery, metallic, shiny or sparkly clothing is one way to get noticed.
Guys should stick with something luxurious looking, such as a satin button-down shirt, depending on the look. Any
buttoned dress shirt would likely work as well. Dress in all black or white to make a statement. For a more casual,
hip-hop outfit, wear a crisp white T-shirt under a favourite basketball jersey or wear baggie jeans with a matching
name-brand T-shirt from a favourite hip-hop designer.
Go through closets and jewellery boxes. Ask family and friends, if necessary, for items you can borrow. Discount
retailers or second-hand shops are other alternatives. Being determined often yields positive results.
Jewellery: Load up on shiny jewellery and accessories. Wear the biggest diamond earrings, rings, diamondencrusted
watches, bracelets, anklets and necklaces. Use inexpensive rhinestones that look like diamonds.
Wear gold or silver jewellery. Even the fake stuff will work if it isn’t blatantly fake like the “jewellery” from novelty
machines.
Guys should wear the largest, shiniest belt buckle. Look for one with rhinestones. Tuck in the shirt, at least in the
front, so the belt buckle can be seen. Wear a nice pair of shiny cuff links for a dressier look.
Accessories: Finish the outfit with fancy-looking accessories. Ladies should carry a big, shiny purse or wrap
themselves in a fake fur if the outfit calls for one. Guys should take advantage of alligator skin or shiny black or
white shoes, as long as they match the outfit. Girls should wear a pair of heels that sparkle and shine. Black,
white, clear or any colour that incorporates rhinestone embellishments is a prime option.
So there you are. Make sure you come along a “Bling a Fwend”!
Looking For A Meeting Place in Dargaville for Short or Long Term Use?
The Pono Masonic Lodge in Hokianga Road, Dargaville, has a great “room” for meetings and social functions
available. Like other “halls” in town, this is an underused facility that just begs to see more happy smiling faces
within its walls.
Chairs, tables, and trestles are there for use. There is also a kitchen with all the necessary cups, saucers, and
cutlery off the main meeting area, with plenty of bench space for preparation. The kitchen is not “approved” but
Storm Event Overflow
People should avoid gathering shellfish in the Whangarei Harbour upstream of Snake Bank for 28 days and avoid
swimming there for the next week following storm water diluted sewage spills caused by yesterday’s intense
rainstorms. The Hatea Pumping Station overflowed between 4pm yesterday and early this morning, spilling 1200
cubic metres into the Hatea River and the waste water treatment plant went onto bypass mode. There were no
spills from Okara.
“In the past, the level of rainfall we had yesterday would have caused a significant overflow of untreated sewage
from Okara so we are making real progress,” said Whangarei District Council Infrastructure Services Manager
Simon Weston. “We are extremely pleased with the way the pumps and pipeline are operating. The Okara pump
and pipeline project was the first milestone in our wastewater spill reduction strategy.
“The next two projects in the strategy are to increase storage capacity at Hatea to reduce spills there and to
increase treatment capacity at the Kioreroa Wastewater Treatment Plant. These two projects are funded within
Council’s current budgets.”
This Week In New Zealand History
1908 First train runs length of main trunk line
The first train to travel the length of the North Island main trunk line,
the ‘Parliament Special’ left Wellington on the evening of 7 August.
On board were Prime Minister Sir Joseph Ward and other members
of Parliament, who were heading to Auckland to greet the American
navy’s visiting ‘Great White Fleet’.
The train travelled over a temporary, unballasted track in the central
section of the still-unfinished main trunk line, and was hauled in turn
by locomotives from the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company,
New Zealand Railways, the Public Works Department and NZ
Railways again. It completed the trip in 20 and a half hours.
The main trunk was not formally opened until 6 November, when Ward drove home a final polished silver spike at
Manganuioteao, near Erua. Regular services began soon after, and an express train was introduced in February
1909, making the trip in 18 hours.
1915 Wellington Battalion captures Chunuk Bair
Regarded as one of the highpoints of the New Zealand effort at Gallipoli, the attack on Chunuk Bair highlighted the
leadership of Lieutenant-Colonel William Malone. But a massive Turkish counter-attack on 10 August recaptured
the position from British troops who had relieved the New Zealanders.
The attack, which began on 6 August, was to be carried out by two assaulting columns of the New Zealand
Infantry Brigade. They were to meet at Rhododendron Spur and then proceed to the summit. It was an ambitious
plan and dependent on speed.
The operation started well – the men of the New Zealand Mounted
Rifles Brigade and Maori Contingent successfully cleared the way for
the assault columns. But delays meant that the attack on the summit
was ordered before all the infantrymen had reached the Spur.
The Auckland Battalion tried first and failed. The commander of
the Wellington Battalion, Malone, refused to sacrifice his men in a
daylight attack and insisted on waiting for night-time. Malone was
a tough but respected commander from Taranaki who regularly put
himself on the line for the welfare of his men. He allegedly told his
superior, Brigadier-General Johnston: ‘No, we are not taking orders
from you people … My men are not going to commit suicide.’
The Wellington Battalion made it to the summit before dawn on 8
August. But with the sunrise came a barrage of fire from the Turks
who held higher ground to the north. A desperate struggle to hold Chunuk Bair ensued. It was not until after dark
that reinforcements, the Otago Battalion and the Wellington Mounted Rifles, arrived. By then only 70 Wellington
Battalion men remained out of some 760. This was to be Malone’s last battle; he was killed by a shell at about
5 p.m. The New Zealanders managed to hold on for two days. The British battalions that relieved them quickly
succumbed to a counter-attack led by Turkish commander Mustafa Kemal, who later became the founding
President of Turkey.
1936 Lovelock wins 1500-m gold at Berlin
Jack Lovelock won New Zealand’s first Olympic athletics gold medal before
Adolf Hitler and a crowd of 110,000 at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He led the
1500-metres field home in a world record time of 3:47.8.
In the lead-up to the 1936 Games Lovelock seriously considered competing
in the 5000 m instead of the 1500 m. He appeared to have made up his
mind by 1 July, when he wrote to Harry Amos, secretary of the New Zealand
Olympic Association, to advise that he had decided to concentrate on the
1500 m. But in the days before the event the media continued to report that
Lovelock was wrestling with the decision. Arthur Porritt, the team manager
in Berlin, recalled that Lovelock even turned up for the 5000-m heats. After
seeking advice from his coach, Bill Thomas, who declined to take responsibility, Lovelock reportedly turned to
Porritt - who advised him to get dressed.
The field for the 1500-m final included many of the world’s best middle-distance runners, whom Lovelock had
competed against over the years: Eric Ny (Sweden), Jerry Cornes (UK), Glen Cunningham (US), Gene Venzke
(US) and Luigi Beccali (Italy), who had won gold in the 1500 m at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, when Lovelock
finished seventh.
Lovelock ran strategically. At the start he positioned himself inside Cunningham and kept with him for much of the
race. As they came to the final lap Ny was leading. Lovelock surged up to his shoulder and Cunningham followed.
Then, with 300 m to go, Lovelock sprinted. His dramatic finish famously caused the BBC commentator, 1924 sprint
gold-medallist Harold Abrahams, to forget his broadcasting etiquette: ‘My God, he’s done it! Jack! Come on! ... He
wins! He’s won! Hooray!’ Lovelock’s time of 3:47.8 was a new world record for the 1500 m and made the 4-minute
mile seem a real possibility (another 109 m at the same pace would have resulted in a 4:04 mile).
The head of Germany’s Olympic Committee, Theodor Lewald, presented Lovelock with his gold medal. He was
also given a year-old seedling of a Black Forest oak tree, a symbol of Germany presented to gold medal winners.
Lovelock gave it to team-mate Ces Matthews, who was returning to New Zealand. By the time it arrived it was in
poor condition, but the curator of the Christchurch Botanical Gardens, James McPherson, nursed it back to health.
In 1941 it was planted at Timaru Boys’ High School, where it is now a large tree - known as ‘Lovelock’s oak’.
