James Hector McCallum

James Hector McCallum
1918 - 1984
James Hector McCallum, affectionately known as "Mac", was born September 23, 1918 near
Maxton in Robeson County, North Carolina. He was the youngest of twelve children born to Jefferson
and Jackie Ann McCallum. After graduating from the public school in Robeson County, he
earned the Bachelor of Science degree from Fayetteville State University and the Master of Science
degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. He also
studied at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest and at the School of
Evangelism at Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mac was admitted to the North Carolina Conference of the Central Jurisdiction in 1942. He served
the church well and was a leader in the merger of the North Carolina-Virginia Conference into the
North Carolina Conference of the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. His
appointments included Hoffman, Mt. Zion, Bomore, Piney Grove, Laurinburg, Cool Springs, Maxton,
Jerusalem, Beauty Spot, John Wesley, Wilson Temple, the Administrative Assistant to the
Cabinet, Sanford District Superintendent, and the Conference Council on Ministries Staff. In all of
these appointments, Mac was loved and admired because of his calm, quiet character and his outstanding
leadership ability. He was a sterling example of God's grace and the Christian Ministry.
Mac loved music and often served as the musician at churches where he was pastor. He organized a
choir from several churches that sang at the 1980 session of the North Carolina Conference, representing
the Black worship experience. He served on several boards and agencies and led the North
Carolina Conference clergy delegation to the 1976 General Conference of the United Methodist
Church. He made a long and lasting contribution to the Church he loved so much when he coauthored
the book, TO BE FAITHFUL TO OUR HERITAGE, a history of Black United
Methodism in North Carolina.
In addition to his work in the ministry, Mac served the children of North Carolina as a public
school teacher and principal for twenty-one years.
Mac married Wilhelmina Powell McCallum and they have one daughter, Rachelle.
James Hector McCallum died on Friday morning, April 27, 1984. He died as he lived, peacefully,
calmly, quietly, and serenely. At his death many accolades were sent to Mrs. McCallum. The Director
of the Methodist Home for Children, Rufus H. Stark III said: "He was a true pioneer, for he
helped this Conference to break from the old racism of the past. The work that you and Jim did on
the Sanford District will always stand as one of the greatest examples of Christian Ministry done in
this Conference. Mac's ability to do that job with grace and confidence, understanding and strength is
one of the greatest stories of our times. It took a great deal of courage for him to take that appointment
and I shall always admire and respect him. He lived the spirit of Jesus as well as anyone I have
known."
"Rev. Mac" served as interim pastor three times, 1947-1949, 1956-1963 and May-October, 1983.
History of Piney Grove United Methodist Church
Piney Grove United Methodist Church is celebrating its 100th Anniversary under the leadership of
the Rev. Robert A. Fairley, Sr. We are proud to note that the present pastor is from the Maxton area.
According to the best sources available, the first pastor appointed to Piney Grove was the Rev. J .H.
Hunter in 1886. The earliest deed was dated October 31, 1889, for the purchase of one acre of land
for the sum of twenty dollars. Peter McRae, S.A. McQueen and Jim Fairley were the trustees that
signed the deed.
The deed specified that the premises would be used, kept and maintained for divine worship and
membership. There were a lot of faithful and dedicated persons who were very instrumental in the
building and growth of the church.
Brief historical accounts of Piney Grove's accomplishments over the years cannot be properly
acknowledged due to the lack of written records.
Based on material made available from a publication on the history of Black Methodism in North
Carolina, we would like to honor the Ministers who provided leadership for our church. The following
is a list of their names and dates of appointments:
All of the people of the Rockingham District re]OlCe with you and your people
today as Piney Grove celebrates its one hundredth anniversary! Surely you
are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses for this occasion as those whose
lives and talents provided the leadership for the organization of this church
in days gone by speak words of praise for its continuing life today.
History is a great teacher. Too often we look at the negative side of the
past and say, "We'll never make that mistake again," but history books are
filled with persons who did make the same mistake again and again. As a part
of the Body of Christ - the Church - we look at history with a positive view,
to see repeatedly how the power of God in Christ Jesus, His Son, allows us to
be reclaimed from the mistakes of the past with power to live a strong and
renewed life in days to come.
The witness of Piney Grove is not found so much in a building as it is in the
lives of those who pass through its doors week by week to find refreshment
and peace from their daily trials and tribulations elsewhere in the world.
The joy of changed lives and the legacy of new opportunities are the marks of
Piney Grove's contribution to the Kingdom of God in this particular place.
Surely God will continue to bless the faithful response and dedication of His
people here in this community as they worship and praise Him in the coming
years. May the next hundred years be still sweeter!
I wish to extend greetings and congratulations upon your celebration
of the Centennial of Piney Grove United Methodist Church.
Piney Grove Church has a fine history of service to its community,
and to the Annual Conference of which it has been a part. You have
sent many of your sons and daughters, and they have rendered outstanding
service, beyond the local church.
As you celebrate the past, you are challenged to enhance the ministry
and mission of your church in the present, so that Piney Grove will
have a future equally as, if not more effective, as its past.
May God bless your celebration. Shirley and Josefa join me in the
expression of greetings and best wishes.
Very sincerely yours,
I thank God for this opportunity to Welcome you to Piney Grove
United Methodist Ohurch. Our doors are always open wide for visitors
and friends to share our worship services, or to participate in our
other activities. Thank you for helping us celebrate our ONE
HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY.
It is a distinct honor to serve as the Pastor of Piney Grove
following the illustrious and dedicated leadership of my predecessors.
Rich is the heritage; great is the challenge to continue building on
their strengths.
I cannot proceed with this brief statement without expressing
my genuine appreciation to the Homecoming Committee and all who have
worked diligently in.the promotion of this historic event. The fine
members of this church have provided a source of inspiration and
encouragement to carryon for God and his Kingdom on earth.
Homecoming, "86" ushers in a new era for Piney Grove. As we
celebrate a century of service to this community, we seize this
opportunity to seriously develop plans today for tomorrow. Reflecting
on past achievements, evaluating present accomplishments, Piney Grove
must now point its efforts toward the future by developing a ministry
of HOPE. This ministry must provide hope for continual spiritual
uplift; hope for greater membership response in meeting the needs of
the church; hope for a broader vision of service to the community at
large.
My wife, Ann, and sons, Robert Jr., and Erskine, join me in
challenging each of you to continue to support this church with your
prayers, gifts, and service.
As a Piney Grove Team, with the help of Almighty God, we shall
be His people in spirit and in truth.
Robert A. Fairley Sr., Pastor

"Greetings In The Name Of Our Lord Jesus Christ"
Thanks be to God our Father who has brought us and sustained
us through these 100 years.
We give thanks to God for the forefathers who labored, prayed,
and gave their lives that we might have this place of worship. We
also give thanks for the loyal mothers who labored and prayed with
them.
Because of the inspiration and prayers of these dedicated
mothers & fathers, young men and women answered the call to the
Gospel ministry.
We have a rich heritage of which we can be proud. It is my
prayer that God will grant us the courage and strength to move forward.
Let us hold to his unchanging hand and follow where He leads.
In this faith let us say "To God be the glory, great things
He has done: 1
