A Portfolio of Practices <strong>for</strong><br />

Embedd<strong>in</strong>g Susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />

The members of the NBS Leadership Council that commissioned this study wanted to know how to embed<br />

<strong>susta<strong>in</strong>ability</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>organizational</strong> <strong>culture</strong>. In construct<strong>in</strong>g this review, we are not address<strong>in</strong>g all of the ways to be a<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able organization. Instead, this review is targeted at those organizations that have made some strategic choices<br />

about their pursuit of <strong>susta<strong>in</strong>ability</strong> and <strong>in</strong> the process, have identified a need to strengthen their organization’s<br />

<strong>susta<strong>in</strong>ability</strong> <strong>culture</strong>.<br />

Consequently, <strong>in</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g our analysis of the available practitioner and academic literature <strong>in</strong> this area, our focus<br />

was on <strong>organizational</strong> practices that build and support a <strong>culture</strong> of <strong>susta<strong>in</strong>ability</strong>. As we read each source, we asked<br />

ourselves the follow<strong>in</strong>g questions: what are they do<strong>in</strong>g; who is do<strong>in</strong>g it; what are they try<strong>in</strong>g to accomplish; and how<br />

are they go<strong>in</strong>g about it? Our analysis of the 179 sources that make up this review revealed a multitude of different ways<br />

that organizations can work to embed <strong>susta<strong>in</strong>ability</strong> <strong>in</strong>to <strong>organizational</strong> <strong>culture</strong>. In the end, we identified 59 dist<strong>in</strong>ct<br />

practices. We exam<strong>in</strong>ed these different practices and grouped them <strong>in</strong> a way we anticipate will be mean<strong>in</strong>gful <strong>for</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>esses. The practices varied on two ma<strong>in</strong> dimensions relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>tent and their approach. These two dimensions<br />

are described below.
