q Main Hall (1896): UMW’s first<br />

and most iconic building includes several<br />

additions to the original structure, all of<br />

which are part of an ongoing restoration<br />

project. In addition to classrooms, Main<br />

Hall houses the Departments of Education,<br />

English and Fine Arts as well as the Office<br />

of the Provost, the School of Outreach,<br />

Academic Advising, Student Success, TRiO,<br />

the Beier Auditorium, the Small Auditorium,<br />

and the UMW Art Gallery.<br />

w Roe House (1912): Former home of<br />

Margaret and Joe Roe, the Roe House was<br />

originally located 28 miles south of Dillon.<br />

Media mogul Ted Turner later purchased<br />

the house and donated it to Montana<br />

Western in 1998. After its relocation the<br />

house received a complete renovation<br />

funded by Mrs. Roe. The Roe House is<br />

now home to the Office of the Chancellor,<br />

the Montana Western Foundation, Alumni<br />

Relations, and University Relations.<br />

e MatHews Residence Hall (1919):<br />

Originally the Women’s Residence Hall,<br />

Mathews Hall was dedicated in 1981 to<br />

honor longtime campus employee Georgia<br />

Mathews. The Lewis and Clark Banquet<br />

Room and the Heritage Room are both<br />

located in Mathews. The UMW Dining Hall<br />

is also connected to Mathews.<br />

r dining Hall (1921)<br />

t Business and tecHnologY<br />

Building (1924):<br />

Originally the college’s first gym, this<br />

building now houses the Business and<br />

Technology Department, the Center for<br />

Service Learning, and Montana Youth<br />

Challenge classrooms and faculty offices.<br />

y sHoRt centeR (1969): The James<br />

Short Administrative Building houses<br />

the Offices of Admissions, the Registrar,<br />

the Vice Chancellor of Finance, the Business<br />

Office and the campus mail room.<br />

u caRson liBRaRY (1969): The Lucy<br />

Carson Library and Media Center was<br />

named after a longtime UMW English<br />

professor. The building contains two<br />

levels and is connected to the Swysgood<br />

Technology Center.<br />

i student union Building (1958):<br />

The Student Union Building houses<br />

the <strong>Campus</strong> Bookstore, the Bark n’ Bite<br />

convenience store, KDWG Radio, the<br />

Department of History, Philosophy and<br />

Social Sciences, the Student Senate<br />

offices, a student lounge, conference<br />

room, game room and Stageline Pizza.<br />

o swYsgood tecHnologY<br />

centeR (2001): The 23,000-square<br />

foot STC is the newest building on<br />

campus. The STC houses computer labs,<br />

meeting spaces, smart classrooms and<br />

printing facilities. The STC Great Room<br />

and Conference Room are located in the<br />

top floor. The STC Computer Technology<br />

Center and Audio/Visual Office are located<br />

on the main floor. The university’s coffee<br />

shop, The Cup, is located in the lower level.<br />

a Block Hall (1971): Block Hall<br />

honors longtime UMW science professor<br />

Daniel G. Block. It houses the Departments<br />

of Biology, Environmental Sciences,<br />

and Mathematics, as well as laboratories,<br />

Information Technology Services and a<br />

Apple Macintosh lab.<br />

s Facilities seRvices: This building<br />

is the home of the Facilities Services<br />

Administrative Offices.<br />

d Heating Plant/BioMass<br />

BoileR (1926): In 2007, UMW<br />

converted the campus heating plant<br />

into a wood chip-fueled biomass boiler.<br />

This low-emissions boiler provides nearly<br />

70 percent of the heat and hot water for<br />

campus while annually removing over<br />

1,000 million tons of CO 2 from the<br />

atmosphere and saving over $100,000.<br />

f cuRious Minds eaRlY<br />

cHildHood education centeR:<br />

The Center offers campus-based<br />

developmental childcare for children ages<br />

three to eight. Curious Minds services are<br />

offered to children of UMW students,<br />

faculty, staff, and the Dillon community.<br />

Curious Minds is also a model lab setting<br />

for UMW early childhood education<br />

students.<br />

g FaMilY Housing (1958): Family<br />

Housing features 16 one- and two-<br />

bedroom apartments.<br />

h JoRdan Residence Hall (1958):<br />

This building honors UMW’s sixth<br />

president, Rush Jordan.<br />

j davis Residence Hall (1959):<br />

Davis Hall originally housed 90 students.<br />

The building is named after former<br />

UMW president Sheldon E. Davis. Davis<br />

Hall houses the Offices of the Dean of<br />

Students, Residence Life, Health Services,<br />

Disability Services and <strong>Campus</strong> Counseling.<br />

Houses the Montana Youth Challenge<br />

RecReation centeR (BaRc):<br />

The BARC is the center of athletic<br />

activity on campus. It houses the Straugh<br />

Gymnasium; the Keltz Arena; the Stauffer<br />

Conference Room; an upstairs gymnasium;<br />

weight, training, cardio, and aerobics<br />

rooms; racquetball courts; classrooms;<br />

the athletic director’s office; and athletic<br />

department and HHP offices.<br />

studies: Named to acknowledge the<br />

working partnership between the equine<br />

studies program and La Cense Montana,<br />

the program’s main office is located here.<br />

2@ soutH caMPus Housing<br />

2# Fine aRts annex: The annex<br />

contains the sculpture, glass blowing,<br />

and ceramics facilities for the Fine Arts<br />

Department.<br />

2$ caMPus coMMunitY gaRden:<br />

The garden serves as a learning center<br />

for sustainable, local agriculture and<br />

renewable energy. Garden plots are also<br />

available to members of the UMW and<br />

Dillon communities.
