<strong>Neuro</strong>-<strong>Oncology</strong> Nursing<br />

Nurses, physician assistants <strong>and</strong> technicians<br />

specializing in the care of patients with brain tumors are<br />

an integral part of the BTNC. Members of the nursing<br />

<strong>and</strong> physician assistant team, which includes Cathy<br />

Brewer, Gail Ditz, Michele Gavin, Betty Jamison, Debra<br />

Kangisser, Kathy Lupica, Mary Miller, Carol Patton,<br />

Rachel Perez, Sherry Soeder, Laural Turo, Carla Duvall,<br />

Shelley Ogrin <strong>and</strong> Mary Murphy, are often the first<br />

contact for patients seeking an opinion or coming to the<br />

outpatient department for evaluation. The outpatient<br />

nursing team is overseen by Marcella Lupica.<br />

Kathy Lupica facilitates our monthly <strong>Brain</strong> <strong>Tumor</strong><br />

Support Group, which is attended by patients,<br />

families <strong>and</strong> friends. Ms. Lupica presented at several<br />

professional <strong>and</strong> patient conferences in 2008, including<br />

a lecture on “<strong>Brain</strong> <strong>Tumor</strong> Updates” at the <strong>Neuro</strong>science<br />

Nursing Conference at Clevel<strong>and</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> <strong>and</strong> “<strong>Brain</strong><br />

<strong>Tumor</strong> Pathology Update” as part of a pre-conference<br />

workshop at the American Association of <strong>Neuro</strong>science<br />

Nurses’ 40th Annual Educational Meeting in Nashville,<br />

Tennessee. She also co-presented “<strong>Brain</strong> <strong>Tumor</strong>s: Facing<br />

the Challenge Together” for patients <strong>and</strong> loved ones,<br />

hosted at The Gathering Place.<br />

Gail Ditz presented “Advances in <strong>Neuro</strong>imaging” as<br />

part of a preponderance workshop at the American<br />

Association of <strong>Neuro</strong>science Nurses’ 40th Annual<br />

Educational Meeting. She also presented a lecture<br />

on “<strong>Neuro</strong>imaging for the Bedside Nurse” at the<br />

<strong>Neuro</strong>science Nursing Conference at Clevel<strong>and</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>.<br />

Cathy Brewer <strong>and</strong> Carol Patton assist with patients<br />

interested in participating in or currently involved in<br />

research protocols. Betty Jamison works with patients<br />

undergoing Gamma Knife radiosurgery.<br />
