Bandsource’s commitment<br />
to music education is also<br />
reflected in its unique stocking<br />
philosophy. Mouthpieces are<br />
stacked eight deep, and the<br />
more popular pieces 12 deep —<br />
all in an effort to let student<br />
musicians find what piece fits<br />
them best.<br />
“Everything we stock here,<br />
accessory-wise or instrumentwise,<br />
is meant to be opened<br />
and played,” Biedron said. “We<br />
tape up all the mouthpieces<br />
when they come in the door.”<br />
He added that he wants to<br />
make the tryout experience as<br />
positive for musicians as possible.<br />
“We are not going to be<br />
like, ‘Here is your mouthpiece,’<br />
and have you pay $98, walk<br />
out the door, get to your lesson<br />
and find that your mouthpiece<br />
doesn’t work that great,”<br />
Biedron said. “We say, ‘If you<br />
have your horn, bring it in the<br />
store. If you want to borrow<br />
our horn, go ahead. Then, try<br />
all three mouthpieces that we<br />
have in stock and choose the<br />
one that fits the best.’”<br />
PERSONAL TOUCH<br />
Bandsource employs a small<br />
staff, but at any given time,<br />
there are at least four employees<br />
in the showroom, letting<br />
them connect with each customer<br />
on a personal level.<br />
“A kid we know came in<br />
this morning, and he goes to<br />
school a couple of miles<br />
away,” Johnson said. “He’s<br />
got marching band right now,<br />
and I know that it’s over at
