scarcity around J<strong>in</strong>dezhen, forc<strong>in</strong>g porcela<strong>in</strong> manufacturers to<br />

go 300 miles for wood by <strong>the</strong> 18th century (Rice, 1987:163).<br />

Coal m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was well developed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Song Dynasty, though<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn part <strong>of</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. Coal had <strong>the</strong> advantage<br />

<strong>of</strong> rapid ignition and a high last<strong>in</strong>g temperature, properties that<br />

allowed <strong>the</strong> clay, glaze and pigments to fully react chemically<br />

and resulted <strong>in</strong> better quality. Both fuels are used <strong>in</strong> Fujian<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce today.<br />

Fireclay saggars (or saggers) were built as protective<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>ers for fir<strong>in</strong>g. These were boxes <strong>of</strong> refactory clay <strong>in</strong><br />

which one or more ceramic items were placed dur<strong>in</strong>g fir<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

to shelter <strong>the</strong> pieces from direct flames or ash. In reduction<br />

fir<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> saggar should be airtight and <strong>in</strong> oxidis<strong>in</strong>g fir<strong>in</strong>g air<br />

should be allowed to enter. These saggars absorbed substantial<br />

amounts <strong>of</strong> heat and different stack<strong>in</strong>g methods were employed<br />

for ceramics <strong>in</strong>side accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> ceramic. The wares<br />

were ei<strong>the</strong>r stacked upside down on unfired stepped r<strong>in</strong>gs with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir mouth-rims unglazed to avoid fus<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>in</strong> a saggar that<br />

required only <strong>the</strong> foot rim to be unglazed. Stack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bowls <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> kiln can be established from <strong>the</strong> rims and unglazed<br />

portions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bowls excavated from Bai Jiao 1. The black<br />

glazed bowl was fired <strong>in</strong> separate saggar fir<strong>in</strong>g moulds (Figure<br />

39), while <strong>the</strong> celadon were stacked one bowl <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

(Figure 40). For glost fir<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong> glazed wares may have been<br />

carefully separated by small tripods called stilts or props so<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y did not touch each o<strong>the</strong>r and mare <strong>the</strong> glaze.<br />

Stone weight (?)<br />

One stone weight was a recovered from Bai Jiao 1 and<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r was collected dur<strong>in</strong>g a survey for new wrecks site.<br />

Identification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se stone objects could not be<br />

confirmed, although net weights or perhaps sound<strong>in</strong>g weights<br />

are a possible <strong>in</strong>terpretation (Figure 41).<br />

Concretions<br />

Several small concretions were removed from <strong>the</strong> site, some<br />

embedded with ceramic material. Initial <strong>in</strong>spection what ferrous<br />

material formed <strong>the</strong> conglomerate although x-ray analysis will<br />

be undertaken <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />
