Marks on Ch<strong>in</strong>ese ceramics started to appear dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) and became <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

common on <strong>the</strong> pottery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tang and Song dynasties. The<br />

types <strong>of</strong> marks <strong>in</strong>cluded those <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> particular<br />

emperors, <strong>the</strong> place at which <strong>the</strong> pottery was produced, a<br />

dedication or good wish, a mark <strong>of</strong> commendation, a potter’s<br />

signature or, a symbol <strong>of</strong> good fortune drawn from Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />

mythology.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bowls recovered showed evidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> potters<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ish on <strong>the</strong> clay body. Smooth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clay us<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

straight edged implement is obvious <strong>in</strong> Figure 30. Beat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or paddl<strong>in</strong>g, that is, repeated strik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clay with or<br />

without <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> oppos<strong>in</strong>g pressure, is undertaken on roughly<br />

preformed ceramic vessels to modify its shape, size, surface<br />

characteristics and to compact <strong>the</strong> paste. Trimm<strong>in</strong>g or fettl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is generally associated with wheel-thrown or mould made<br />

pottery, and refers to <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g away excess clay<br />

(Rice, 1987:137).<br />

Ch e m i C a l C o m P o S i t i o n<br />

The 1990 expedition did a chemical analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceramics<br />

from Bai Jiao 1 <strong>in</strong> comparison to some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceramic samples<br />

from different kiln sites <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. The result<strong>in</strong>g comparison<br />

showed that <strong>the</strong> black glazed bowls from Bai Jiao 1 did not<br />

conta<strong>in</strong> significant traces <strong>of</strong> titanium oxide (TiO 2 ), but that<br />

all those from <strong>the</strong> different kiln sites showed a titanium oxide<br />

component with a density <strong>of</strong> 0.33%–1.04%. The molecular<br />

formula <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bai Jiao 1 ceramics paste was analysed as:<br />

0.543–0.613 RxOy.Al 2 O 3 .5.63–5.73SiO2.<br />

The kiln sites (refer to Figure 37) used for <strong>the</strong> comparison<br />

were:<br />

Gu Wan Yao Shan kiln <strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ghou County;<br />

Qiao Xia kiln <strong>in</strong> Hongwei village <strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ghou County;<br />

Guan Tan Hai Tong kiln <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> suburb <strong>of</strong> Fuzhou;<br />

Shikong kiln <strong>of</strong> Fuq<strong>in</strong>g County;<br />

Fei Luan kiln <strong>of</strong> Nanp<strong>in</strong>g County.<br />

The composition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lead oxide (PbO) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceramics<br />

from each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se kiln sites was generally found to be more<br />

than that <strong>of</strong> D<strong>in</strong>ghai. So it has been concluded that <strong>the</strong> black<br />

glazed bowls from Bai Jiao 1 are not from any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se kiln<br />

sites. The paste to make <strong>the</strong>se bowls would generally have<br />

been collected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kiln site. Fur<strong>the</strong>r regional<br />

studies may reveal a match betweeen <strong>the</strong> Bai Jiao 1 ceramics<br />

and a production centre.
