protect <strong>the</strong> site <strong>the</strong> village government has prevented shell<br />

dredg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area s<strong>in</strong>ce 1989. Ceramic material from Bai<br />

Jiao 1 removed prior to 1995 is stored at <strong>the</strong> D<strong>in</strong>ghai school<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Lianjiang County Museum.<br />

Figure 5 shows <strong>the</strong> overall survey plan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work<br />

conducted <strong>in</strong> 1990. A total <strong>of</strong> 475 <strong>of</strong> ceramic items were<br />

recovered dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> surface collection and tests excavation<br />

cover<strong>in</strong>g a total area <strong>of</strong> 48 square metres made up <strong>of</strong> twelve<br />

2x2 metre grids. Of <strong>the</strong> material 69% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceramics were<br />

black glazed bowls. Of <strong>the</strong> 243 items <strong>of</strong> ceramic collected<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> survey from <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site; only 29 were<br />

complete. They <strong>in</strong>cluded 169 pieces <strong>of</strong> black glazed bowls, 65<br />

y<strong>in</strong>g q<strong>in</strong>g porcela<strong>in</strong>s (light green celadon), 4 white porcela<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

3 celadon and 2 blue and white shards.<br />

Overall 232 pieces were recovered from <strong>the</strong> test excavation<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 173 pieces <strong>of</strong> black bowl and 59 pieces <strong>of</strong> y<strong>in</strong>g q<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ceramic; 119 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se were complete (Benan Lui, 1995:3).<br />

Excavation (us<strong>in</strong>g a water dredge) <strong>in</strong> grid square T1 revealed<br />

a timber extend<strong>in</strong>g west from a large concretion located at <strong>the</strong><br />

edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> zero datum. It was obvious that <strong>the</strong> site required<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestigation and this was <strong>the</strong> proposed objective <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 1995 excavation.<br />

D<strong>in</strong>ghai village (Figure 6). The reef is 600 metres away from<br />

<strong>the</strong> coast. It is adjacent to <strong>the</strong> Haichao Shi (Tide Temple)<br />

on <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>land, which is famous throughout <strong>the</strong> Lianjiang<br />

County and with <strong>the</strong> Taiwanese. Hu Wan Yu is located to<br />

<strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> Bai Jiao, a small un<strong>in</strong>habited island that had been<br />

occupied previously by <strong>the</strong> army. The distance between <strong>the</strong><br />

two is approximately 1000 metres.<br />

The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal rock <strong>of</strong> Bai Jiao is orientated along a north<br />

south axis and is approximately 50 metres long. The Bai Jiao<br />

1 site is adjacent to a series <strong>of</strong> small exposed rocks and a<br />

submerged reef, 40 metres long, north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal rock<br />

(Figure 7). These rocks are partially exposed at low tide and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y form part <strong>of</strong> a reef system ly<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> north-east <strong>of</strong><br />

D<strong>in</strong>ghai village vary<strong>in</strong>g up to 800 metres <strong>of</strong>fshore.<br />

There are numerous small islands and reef <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity<br />

<strong>of</strong> D<strong>in</strong>ghai. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are only visible when <strong>the</strong> tide is <strong>in</strong><br />

ebb. They are considered hazards to navigation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area.<br />

The larger ones <strong>in</strong>clude Yuzhi Wei, Gui Yu, Q<strong>in</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g Yu, Long<br />

Wen Yu, Ke Men Yu, Bai Jiao, Ji Shi Yu.<br />

The GPS position for <strong>the</strong> site <strong>in</strong> 1995 was:<br />

The GPS used was a Magellan Pro 1000. Datum was set<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Hong Kong (1963) reference.<br />
