The Ko Si Chang 2 Ship<br />

It is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g that this is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> only sites <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gulf <strong>of</strong><br />

Thailand that is likely <strong>of</strong> non-Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Asian construction<br />

(FIG). The vessel has plank<strong>in</strong>g that is skew nailed from <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>side, with traces <strong>of</strong> cham putty <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heads <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nail holes.<br />

The skew nail<strong>in</strong>g suggests a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese or East Asian orig<strong>in</strong>,<br />

although skew nail<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side has not be recorded<br />

to date. It is double planked (plank thicknesses 120 mm and<br />

40 mm) but <strong>the</strong>re is little surviv<strong>in</strong>g detail <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bulkheads<br />

and keel s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> hull structure was extensively damaged.<br />

There is evidence that <strong>the</strong>re was a keel and <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> two<br />

bulkheads, and traces <strong>of</strong> at least six. The planks have short<br />

hooked, diagonal scarfs located under <strong>the</strong> bulkheads. This site<br />

is dated to 1290±60.<br />
