To Those Who Will Return
Time in itself is meaningless-it is only what happens in it that counts.
Men died yesterday, men are dying today, men will die tomorrow. These
deaths are not futile but are the result of the constant winning struggle of
right over might. Though these deaths are reducing the number in the ranks
of those who will be marching back to their Alma Mater when peace and
good-will are once again restored, they will not reduce nor lessen our aware
ness of their presence. It is, therefore, to those who will return, in spirit if
not in body, that we dedicate this volume of the La Crosse Annual for 1945.
On that fatal day last fall, September 11, "the little green ears" left his
high school days behind and entered a higher institution of learning here at
La Crosse College. He set sail upon hig journey in a somewhat bewildering
manner. But like a true sailor he braved the storm and rolling waves which
faced him at various intervals of the year. Society life around college beckoned
him on and "little green ears" fO'1nd himself participating strange and
new adventures. During those first few days of sailing "little green ears"
earned the right to have bestowed up)n him the title "Never at the right
place at the right time." However he d ',d not let those days of rough sailing
upset him. Instead he met them calmly and assuredly. His voyage is at last
ended. He has safely completed one ye::tr of sailing and is now waiting to set
sail again next fall. Here's wishing yo::! clear sailing ahead "little green ears"!
May your ship be loaded with a rich and fruitful cargo during your sophomore
latter's home floor. Experience gained from earlier games shewed in the La Crosse quintet, but they
still lacked that certain something needed to be victorious. Co-Captains Cooks and Murphy again
held the honors for the Millermen with 18 and 17 points respectively.
LA CROSSE, 38; WINONA, 32
LA CROSSE, 43; WINONA, 33
D EFEAT wasn't in store for Coach Leon Miller's cagers as they invaded Winona State Teachers
College of Winona, Minnesota. La Crosse trailed by nine points at the end of the first stanza, but
with the help of Don Cooks' 19 points, Francis Murphy's 10, and Elmer Zebell's seven, the Indians
edged into a lead position and held that position to the triumphant finish. Led by their supelative
captain, "Sonny" DahL the Winonaians came to L.S.T.C. bent for revenge, but again history
repeated itself, this time all to La Crosse's advantage. Don Cooks, Racine's gift to La Crosse,
again topped all with 21 points to his credit.
LA CROSSE, 24; UPPER lOWA, 32
LA CROSSE, 24; UPPER IOWA, 39
I OWA again showed its mettle when the Upper Iowa University cagers from Fayette, Iowa, rolled
into La Crosse and gave the local team its third defeat of the season. Francis Murphy scored
eleven points to pace the locals. Handicapped greatly by a foreign court, the invading prowess of
La Crosse Teachers was reduced to its minimum and the Teachers fell behind immediately in their
second encounter with the boys from Upper Iowa to suffer another stinging defeat. Murphy scored
14 points in this repeat performance, Cooks scored 8, and speedy forward Arland LaBansky accounted
for the remaining 2 of the La Crosse total.
LA CROSSE, 34; MILWAUKEE, 54
LA CROSSE. 54; MILWAUKEE, 45
A FTER the Christmas recess La Crosse showed up on the floor of the Milwaukee State Teachers'
Fieldhouse to play a fast and furious game, but they just weren't fast and furious enough to top
those flashy "Green Gulls" of Milwaukee. Cook;, Murphy, and Zebell again led La Crosse's scoring
with 16, 10, and 6 points respectively. Milwaukee, on its return performance with the Indians,
came up to La Crosse expecting another easy victory, but the L.S.T.C. Indians used their new
warriors, Jim Seri, Ray Baty, and John Schmitz, to a great advantage. La Crosse took the lead at
the very beginning and held that lead through the entire game. Tall Francis Murphy ran wild
against the "Green Gulls", scoring 25 points, was followed by Schmitz with 12, and Seri and
Cooks with eight apiece.
LA CROSSE, 30; RIVER FALLS, 29
LA CROSSE, 35; RIVER FALLS, 58
N ATURALLY expecting another addition to the Indians' string of defeats, L.S.T.C. spectators
were greatly and happily surprised by a last minute rally staged by their gallant "braves" that
put the score at "29 all". Then newcomer Jim Seri executed a perfect charity toss, the final whistle
blew, and the game was ours. The aggresisve ball retrieving by rangy guard Bill Gilles permitted
the La Crosse State Teachers to have many good scoring positions throughout the game. Revenge
was sweet for the high-scoring River Falls Falcons when they defeated a seemingly tired visitor,
La Crosse, by 23 enormous points. Murphy scored 16, Cooks 10, and Seri followed with 7.
LA CROSSE, 38; EAU CLAIRE, 68
LA CROSSE, 29; EAU CLAIRE, 35
S ORELY needing the proverbial "shot in the arm" and much more the Indians traveled to
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and suffered their worst defeat of the season at the clever hands of the
Eau Claire State Teachers. The "Mystery Men" of Eau Claire used a blocking play to such perfection
that very few of the Indians could get going. Cooks and Murphy were high for La Crosse.
16 and 17 points respectively. Although the score was not as lopsided as in the first game with
E.C.S.T.C.• the score in this second game with Coach William Zorn's cagers. and the finale for
Coach Leon Miller's cagers, it was still lopsided enough to give Eau Claire another victory and
La Crosse another defeat. Scoring for La Crosse was equally divided among the team members.
Cooks led with nine, followed by Schmitz and Seri with six apiece, Murphy with five, Baty two.
and Johnson one.
Softball
A thrilling softball tournament was led by Doris Tetzlaff in the spring of 44. Talent in many
fields of play was shown, and had there been a better turnout, an even more thrilling tournament
could have taken place. The seniors and the sophomores battled it out in a game of pitching, and
the experience of the seniors showed up when they brought in the winning runs.
